Hi all,

I've done some searching, and I am unable to find a Byte Magazine archive.

I really enjoy the work of ThumpNugget and his scans of Antic, Analog, and Softside archives.

Thump, is this something you are planning on working on, or would be interested in doing? I'd be willing to lend my time, scanning in issues, doing corrections, etc...

Would anyone else be interested in an archive of Byte Magazines?

Guess I should toss that out there, so I'm not doing something for nothing.

Byte Magazine was great in the 80s. I would definitely be interested in seeing an archive. Thanks for doing this if you should do so.

Hey there, sorry to say I am not planning on BYTE anytime soon. I have a few issues but they still have a (minimal) presence on the web so I thought it best to steer clear.. I do plan to do ROM (not the Atari magazine) and KiloBaud (magazine done by the same person who started BYTE - Just waiting for the last few issues) at some point.

If someone was planning on doing BYTE I would certainly donate any issues I had.

Happily, Byte is more widely available (in libraries, anyway) than some of the smaller and more obscure system-specific magazines. (I've also seen bound volumes of PC Magazine and Creative Computing in academic libraries.) Therefore it is available, even if not necessarily online.

One of the universities where I did my undergraduate studies had a full and complete run of Byte, from issue 1 onwards!

I had a complete run from January 1987 through it's demise in Spring(?) 1998. Alas, I could not even give the issues away (for free) when I moved 2001.

Upon closer inspection I have more of these than I thought (that and there a few that went really cheap on eBay last week). Not a ton of them but around 40 issues (mostly from 1979-1982 and a few earlier ones).

If anyone is really serious about putting effort into this.. What magazines do you have that you are willing to part with? I think one possible way to do this is instead of doing the entire archive and releasing it at once (which would take forever) would be to work on getting complete one year sequences and putting out complete volumes.

I've been scouring craigslist, and ebay for good deals on BYTE magazine issues. I'm waiting to hear back from two possible sources, one states that they use to work for BYTE and have a complete collection, and my other source said that they would get back to me with what they had. Hopefully I can negoitate prices, and shipping. But I have a flatbed scanner warmed up and ready to scan.

As for doing one year at a time, might be worth it. As these are pretty thick, etc.

I'd be willing to help with scanning what you have Thump, we could PM for more detailed information.

Sounds like you are making some good progress! Keep pushing and see what you can come up with.. WOrking with a flatbed scanner may be a little painful though. I was being a bit optimistic on the number of pages. I just finished cataloging the BYTES I have.. 41 issues (12172 pages). They run from Dec 76 through Dec 81.. The Dec-81 issue alone is 544 pages!

I took a quick peek through a few of the 1981 issues.. There were several issues with articles from Chris Crawford going over display lists and other Atari specifics. I had no idea he had written those articles for BYTE.

These articles by Chris Crawford eventually became the basis for the book De-Re Atari.

Another magazine that had Atari articles was Computer Shopper. There were some good articles in there. Unfortuntely they are hard to find. I have a few but that's it.
