What's your record for the most you have paid for a new game at retail? By that, I mean, a new game for a current gaming system that is produced and sold in your country -- so finding a new Sega Saturn game at a Gamestop today or a Japanese PS2 game here in the States wouldn't count.

I clearly remember when I bought my SNES in December of 1991. It was the first major item I got with my own money (I was 15 at the time). The system was $180 and I wanted another game to go with it. I saw Final Fantasy II in the store also -- they didn't have many games -- and recalled how much fun the first one was and so I asked for it.

Paid $70 for that.

Luckily it was well worth it!

A good friend of mine was as big on the Genesis in those days as I was with the SNES, and he told me he paid $60 for Phantasy Star II, $70 for Phantasy Star III, and $80 for Phantasy Star IV when he bought those on release day. Ouch!

I paid $80 for Turok: Dinosaur Hunter I believe; it was worth it at the time.

Virtua Racing for Genesis was supposedly $120 based on an article I read (they doubled the amount of chips it would use and basically doubled the price...). It's basically like an FX chip game for the Genesis but insanely expensive.

I'd have to say $54.99 for Super Mario Sunshine (with free players guide) on release day. What a mistake...

Pretty sure this has been asked before and I'll answer as I did the previous time, $45 - $50 for Zaxxon for the ColecoVision in 82.It was the most expensive cart in their catalog at the time.

*waits for someone to post about buying a NEO-GEO cart new for $200+*

I can't think of one game in particular that was the most expensive... I don't buy brand new retail games that often nor do I remember prices that well... :(

I have always been one to wait it out and get it used over half or ebay.

The only game in the past decade I have bought brand new for more than $39.99 would have to be New Super Mario Bros.Wii for $48.99

Even at that, I reserved a copy two months prior, and paid it off $10 a week.

I think the only other games I bought new retailed were Doom way back in the day, Mario Paint, Yoshi's Island, Doom SNES, Doom I & II GBA, Duke Nukem Advance.. I think thats it really, everything else I got used.

I believe I paid $70 for Starfox for the SNES. First new game I bought with my own money....Seem to remember paying $80-$100 for a few titles on the Jaguar as new games, but don't remember which, as most I bought used very cheap.

However, something like $300 for Mech assault for X-box (does it count if it cost that for the controller :P, but what a controller, people thought the X-box was big, wait till you busted out a controller that was three times the size of the console :P )

Yeah Steel Battalion owns all but right now the "Band" and "Hero" games are the most expensive.

I always wanted to try Steel Batallion.

The most I can recall paying for a video game that didn't come boxed with one or more unwieldly hunks of plastic is 90 bones Canadienne for Majora's Mask. N64 games got very expensive toward the end of the console's lifespan.

Well, if you count the bundle pack that is Beatles Rock Band, then I'm totally guilty of paying $250. But otherwise, I think the most I ever spent on any new game was $60.

Most expensive game I've ever bought new was Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete on the PS1 back in the day. I think the final price tag (After close to 20% sales tax mind you) was about $118 or so. Of course, I lived in a town that jacked up the price on EVERYTHING, plus I had to get a store to special order it for me so I'm willing to accept that they added the shipping and handling to the price tag. While I loved the game, and don't regret paying what I did for it, I wouldn't ever pay anywhere near that much for a game again.

It was current in '81 when you bought it however, so it's valid. :)

Current... Probably Mortal Kombat 3 for Genesis. I think it was $69 when I got it.

More recently... $250 for Wii Sports (and the Wii that came with it. ;-) )

Classic would be $50 for Atari 8-bit Donkey Kong. Think about it. $50 in 1982 is like $110 today!!
