Red Alert 1: The Domination Pack cost me $70 back in 1998. The box was larger than a three ring binder.
Goldeneye set me back $65 if memory serves right.

Virtua Cop 2 with the Stunner set me back $60.
Time Crisis with the GunCon also set me back $60.
The PlanetWeb 2.0 browser and NetLink combo cost me $200. Technically that's not a game, though.
I think NiGHTS into Dreams cost me $60.

FF7 with the Brady and the Versus guides set me back somewhere around $100 after tax, but since the guides are optional anyway, I'm not sure if it counts.

The most expensive one, though, has to be Virtual On: Operation Moongate. After tax the game itself cost me almost $60, then the Twin Stick was $50 plus $8 to ship. All total I have about $120 in that game, all purchased new in 1997. It's worth every penny.

Oh, wait...Gran Turismo 3 is the most expensive. The game was $50, IIRC, and about a year later when I purchased the Driving Force, that was still $100. Difference is I purchased the Twin Stick within a month of getting Virtual On, whereas when I first got GT3, I had no intent of buying a wheel for it.

I think I paid about $80 for Final Fantasy 3 on the SNES. Definitely worth it at the time.

whatever rockband cost on the PS2 when it came out. That was a total rip and I bought into it cause my kids wanted it. As for classics that I bought for myself new back in the day, that would have to be the either $79.99 for Final Fantasy 1 or Dragon Warrior 1.

I paid $75 for Double Dragon for NES on release day in 1988. (There were a dozen or so kids camped out that morning for first dibs on this one.)

How much was Steel Battalion?
With the controller, it was like $249.95 or something :P though I think it could be bought without it....but why? the controller made the game (IMO) well worth it. You can snag them for around 150 on Ebay now, last I checked.

I bought the Tekken 5 game + arcade stick bundle when it came out. Probably the most expensive brand-new game I bought, about a hundred bucks, I think. I played fighters competitively back then though, so it was worth it. People that paid for Steel Battalion should probably be at the top of this list, too.. Wasn't that $150 or $200/$250 when that came out?

$189.something for the PS2 version of Guitar Hero: World Tour (Complete Band Game) less than a month after it was released. About $40 for Neopets: The Darkest Faerie (which was the whole reason I bought my first PS2). I generally try not to spend much for games, and will *usually* do without until they get marked down (or I can buy them used).

$150 or so for the Guitar Hero World Tour pack, but I'm not sure that should count. I think I paid $60 or $70 for the FF XII collectors edition (whatever it cost when it came out). That's the only time I've ever shelled out money for a collectors edition.

Probably the Mass Effect Special Edition from Gamestop for $80 and the most recent purchase Forza 3 Special Edition also $80. Before those the Halo 2 special edition for the Xbox, picked it up on release day, $70 I think, can't remember right now.

way back in the 70's I paid like $199 for combat, it came with a heavy sixer, 2 joysticks, a big box, power adapter, 2 paddle controllers, rf box, instructions.

It was the ultimate pack-in for a cartridge; never of the likes which we will see again!

Well, if you see it that way, I paid $300 for Daytona USA. Virtua Fighter 2 and Virtua Cop 1 came in the box along with some wires, a demo disc, a controller, and a Sega Saturn. :P

Expensive, expensive game. At least Sega was cool enough to throw their newest console in the box, though.

Er, no, wait. My most expensive game was Minesweeper. I paid $1000 for it. It came packed with Windows 95, a mouse, a keyboard, speakers, a monitor, and a computer! :o

$60-$70 or so for a few N64 games at the beginning before the prices became more standardized at $50.

Well, if you want to go that route, I paid over $2k for the Boing! demo, but it came with a free Amiga 1000, nice Sony monitor, keyboard, mouse, Kickstart 1.0 and workbench (?.?); speakers and word processor sold separately.

Didn't Nintendo Power give away Dragon Warrior free to its subscribers? You know, back when subscribing to something actually came with decent perks?

They did give away Dragon Warrior with a year subscription, but they did that AFTER the game was out for a while, I want to say a year. I allready had bought the game. I felt angry about seeing NP was doing that offer. :x

A few years ago NP was giving away Legend of Zelda: Collector's Edition for the GC with a subscrpition, which I jumped on also.

I've never paid more for $60 for a game new save for Final Fantasy 2 which I said when I started this thread. Actually, I've never paid more then $60 for any game PERIOD save that one -- but I'm not a collector. :P
