Seems I only have a file version of the Sega's 1983 release of Super Zaxxon. Hope that's OK because the US Gold version at Atarimania is .CAS only and I don't have the patience to load cassette images on real A8s. :P

Correction: Turns out I had a ROM image of Super Zaxxon so I loaded it into my SRAM cart.

I can just power up and play our HSC :D

not quite as much fun as I remember but am sure will get into it more once some target scores get posted! It's the sort of game that could do with a remake and more levels... might have a go on the original zaxxon too for comparison :)

Hints: Start of by getting low and holding down fire (yes after you clear the wall!). If you can get to the tunnel after the first part you can get a 2000 point bonus by killing enough enemies, best to only fire when you are line with each enemy here, EP decreases by 1, EP=enemy planes? anyone?. On the next part it's a case of working out the correct height to squeeze between the laser shields and the walls... watch where your bullets go. Then it's time to play with the dragon! Escape key is pause.

Have fun

On the 4th round the enemy planes start shooting at you in the tunnel, making it a much more difficult challenge. The "EP" counter goes down each time you either hit a plane on the landing field or flying in the tunnel and when you destroy a mine layer as well so I'd say it's a safe bet the EP must stand for Enemy Plane, to answer the question posted above.

Frustrating game.

p.s. How is everyone getting a screenshot before the game reverts to the title and high score screen?

pausing it when you get low on ships and getting the phone ready :D The game does grow on you... you get 1000 pointaroonies for shooting the radar dishes but they seem to have put them in hard to get places... looks like they were expecting trouble :ponder:

Thanks but I guess I'm too optimisitic. I don't think I'm going to lose my last ship until I actually do.

Unfortunately, I don't have this game, and I can't seem to get any emulator except Stella (2600 emu.) to work on my turdy Windows XP PC. It's so annoying :(. So, until we play either Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, or Blue Max, I won't be participating in this HSC.

Atari800Win Plus 4.0 works fine on XP - have you tried this emulator? You will need to use the ROM files from the Xformer emulator also on this link. Link to Super Zaxxon ATR and XEX formats.
If you get stuck there are some (bad instructions on my site below and probably) much better info on the main 8-bit forum or just post here and well get you up and runnin :)

So now that I have all the required files, how do I configure Atari800win plus to work with them?

Something like this...

Select the Atari menu, then ROM images.
Click on XL/XE and find the ROM file (from the XFormer you also downloaded) ATARIXL.ROM
Also select BASIC and browse to ATARIBAS.ROM.
You can leave OS-A, OS-B, 5200 and Cartridge blank for now.

From the Atari menu, select Settings and make sure only the 'Enable SIO patch' for fast disk access is ticked.
Now go to the Input menu, select Joysticks, make sure Autofire Mode is off, choose Arrows + RCtrl as fire on Joystick 1 (or map keyset 1 as you wish)
Go to the the View menu, then Graphics Options, select 1024x768 or 800x600 etc. I use Alt and Enter to toggle between window and full screen.

Then from the file menu Load Executable (XEX & COM files) or Autoboot Image (ATR) files and get Zapping :)

Good Luck may the 4Ks be with you :D

IT WORKS! But there are some problems: whenever I load a casette image, it "encounters a fatal error and has to close.".
