Several ka-zillion goes today but no improvement on 300K :x
Here's my tips: I go along staying low bobbing up and down and concentrate on the green ones that take your men then go for the others... if you get low on these men hover near one and the greenies come for him pretty quickly. Make use of the radar. Usually when I die it's trying to turn back, also whatever you do don't let the last man die even if it means crashing into the baddie to save him. Not impressed with hyperspace on the few occasions I have managed to hit a key (and not detonate a smart bomb when an alien bullet is about to splat me) I've normally exploded anyway :D

Great game :)

p.s. Divya I was talking about the red triangle ones that shoot not the mutants, they need feeding with a smart bomb - but if you are quick across at the start you can kill most of these when they are green before they take your men!

Think I am getting too old
am sure atariksi can add an age related equation to the high-score fomulae plus keybord vs joystick equalising factor ;)

Divya - Think the strat guide meant to fly past them then turn and shoot 'em in the back :!:

Adding age would have to be made name-specific like filtering out _Fandal's score since someone at say age 30 could do worse than someone at age 70. I know there's these Tabla players who are in 70s/80s who play better than me. As far as joystick vs. keyboard goes, people should use a real machine since digital joystick is one of the significant likeable things about Atari 800/XL/XE machines vs. modern machines' terrible multi-button analog complicated confusing joysticks where you can mess up even if you read the manual. If you don't remember all those buttons and how to use them (especially in emergency situations in a game), you need to do the following:

Eeenie meenie minie moe
press a button to shoot the foe
if you get it wrong let it go
next time the foe comes you better know
eenie meenie minie moe

BREAKTHROUGH! Benjamin Matlock gets past level 99+! I don't recall my score by the time I turned it off, but here's the picture of it:

Attached Image: P1010818.JPG

I hope this counts as "rolled" on this HSC. The only reason I turned it off was due to needing to pee! I could have kept going indefinitely to be honest -- you get 10k points for an extra life on level 99+ LONG before you die at all. This was on Normal mode. Does it count as "rolling" it?

EDIT: 1,528,725 -- if it doesn't count for a "rolled score" that is.

Great work BM
I think you fandal and others who have clocked the game should have a shoot-out (pun intended) on hard difficulty level ;)

I got busy yesterday with Pac-man on A5200 HSC. It's more of a challenge than 8-bit Pac-man since monsters are smarter. I guess smart-bomb is like a power-pill in pac-man.

You need to put the joystick on the floor. Some digital joysticks have those suction things so you can stick them on the table. I didn't get any cramps nor does my hand hurt but I just have no time to play any more today.

I had a problem where when I kept hitting the space-bar eventually the cartridge lid popped open and lost all my score. I was going to stick a fork in it, but decided to give it another go (by sticking a screw-driver in it):

I did the whole Level 99+ deal. I could have went on and on. I don't know how many more lives I had in reserve but just got tired of it. Truthfully I find the 5200 version much easier since I like the way the stock controller handles for this game. You don't have to leap forward to the keyboard for a smart bomb nor to make a jump.

I always get lower scores on A5200 games due to mostly its controllers. Although Pacman is harder on A5200 so can't blame the controllers there.

I stuck my joystick to the table just in front of my 130xe (has space-bar and keys low and pretty near the front of the box) a good solution so I could reach all the buttons! Kudos to atariksi for the improvised screwdriver fix, I will add the 'cartridge port popped open' to the list of HSC acceptable excuses for not winning ;)

Ok I think there should be joint winners here as three people effectively beat the game and retired, so it's congratulations to Benjamin Matlock, Darthkur and _Fandal_ who makes it two wins out of two  Hopefully that's ok with everyone :ponder:

Any corrections or thoughts please post.

Final Table
1st Fandal (level 99+) 12pts
Benjamin Matlock (level 99+) 12pts
darthkur (level 99+) 12pts

2nd chuckwalla 1,002,850 11pts
3rd atariksi 675,825 10pts
4th therealbountybob 608,300 9pts
5th jetset 387,050 8pts
6th AB positive 208,775 7pts
7th goochman 178,755 6pts
8th divya16 95,225 5pts
9th roadrunner 85,925 4pts
10th mapa 82,950 3pts
11th Preppie!! 31,450 1pt
12th 4Ks 17,725 1pt
13th bluecat 17,575 1pt
14th a8isa1 11,725 1pt
15th sloopy 8,400 1pt

phew;)

Ahm, it's an excuse if they retired. _Fandal_ wins since he maximized the score given what can fit into the 7-digit scoreboard. Surely, Fandal spent more time on it than other "1st" place winners. And I'm not making an excuse regarding machine turning off-- it actually did happen so had to start again but lost a ton of time. It rarely happens but I'll know for next time. I should have played on 800XL.

I've posted the overall table below; will remove this once the official, and more professional, table is in situ. Any corrections or thoughts please post.
Are you doing scaling based on difficulty level? I played normal level.

And more importantly, it's not how you play the game, it's that you get the highest score that fits into the scoreboard unless you can prove wrap-around.

I am pretty sure everyone played on normal...except bluecat. As per promised everyone will be getting an extra point to their score this time around. I do scoring based on actual score...not by level. If I did, I would have to get into a bunch of sub categories...split points and all that. I just simply don't have the time nor patience to do it any other way.

I decided to stick with the above scoring as bluecat would still only have got one point on normal. I've rightly given Fandal the 'win' in the column. I have managed to get the current point standings' excel to html working thanks to a nice macro I found. It's not perfect but looks like it'll be ok :)

I forgot to tell you that it contained a formula. See... you were smart enough to figure it all out! :)

I think you need to debug the macro as 675K > 608K. And perhaps you want to add the grand universal scoring equation to the macro for the future (if not for this game).

37,675 on normal.

I'm adding this during the 4 day extra time/extra credit event.
