There are two games I like, but won´t buy for the Jaguar:

Flashback, as I have this on my Atari Falcon

Are you that you have Flashback on the Atari Falcon and that you are not confused with "Another World"? As far as I know Flashback was never released for the Falcon or Atari ST. And the Flackback demo for the ST is not the same as the Jaguar Flashback game :D

Robert

If the falcon is accelerated there is a port of the flashback engine.

Thanks Christos... I have the flashback engine on my accelerated (CT60) falcon (and another world of course)... I had that game once on the Jaguar but as I use my Falcon more often and a good friend wanted it, I gave it to him...

I also have Towers II and Dino Dudes on Falcon, but I like them on Jaguar (but *maybe* would sell if anyone is interested).

I would have loved Raiden on the Falcon (a beta exists), as this is among my Top 3 Jaguar games, but this will stay a dream like Road Riot 4 WD for the Jaguar (I like it on the Falcon)... It´s interesting that imagitec design made games for Jaguar and Falcon which looked and sounded pretty close to each other... Raiden music on Falcon beta is weaker than Jaguars music, other way in Dino Dudes...

Ah, I see. It is a REminiscence port. Too bad it is too slow on a stock Falcon

Honestly, out of the games I have, I'd have to pick Alien vs Predator. I keep playing it and trying to get in to it but I just can't. It's slow, repetitive, and hard to navigate the levels. I agree that it's got a good atmosphere and the graphics are great but those can't make up for it's boring gameplay.

I hate to admit this, but that pretty much sums up how I feel about AvP too. Still, it's a game I want, if only for the coolness factor of the theme & atmosphere. IMO, this is another Jag game that could stand to be tweaked. Game is almost unplayable in Alien mode as the gameplay takes a serious dive when you're trying to kill or cocoon. I do like the sounds though... especially when switching Predator views. lol

Yeah, it is definitely a slow-paced game but I think that was sort of the point. I think they tried to make it more about suspense, not knowing when something was going to suddenly appear, rather than a run-and-gun approach as the majority of FPS do. But, yeah, I can see where it would be a turn-off to some players.

My only issue with it is how easy it can be to get lost in the damn game lol

If I may, in defence of AvP, I'd like to quote some older posts of mine:

Quote

I've heard this from a few people over the years. The game is so hyped by its fans, and the screenshots look so promising; it's almost guaranteed that a 12-year-old game running on a relatively unpopular system will fail to live up to those kinds of expectations. Personally, I was initially turned off by the framerate. That game is slow, especially when you're playing as the marine! Give it a chance, however, and you'll find a really innovative (and still unique to this day) first-person shooter! The Alien campaign introduces a form of resource management with its cocoon mechanic, the Predator campaign introduces some stealth strategy with its honour system, and the marine campaign adds a clever computer log dynamic to its (brutal) keyhunts (System Shock featured something similar, but only came out about four months earlier than AVP). Despite playing out over the same maps, all three campaigns manage to offer different experiences, and that's downright impressive.

Perhaps if I'd played AVP when it was first released, I'd've been utterly blown away. As it stands though, the game is definitely showing its age. Then again, regardless of technical shortcomings, AVP still impresses from a design standpoint, and manages to offer a solid gaming experience at its core.

I had the easiest time with the Predator campaign, as conserving health and fighting the alien queen were the only real challenges. The alien campaign's challenge lies in keeping track of cocoons and memorising level and ventilation duct layouts; especially since all map data was lost not only after switching levels, but after dying as well. The Marine campaign is just brutal because not only are players expected to find keys (hidden in corpses) based on vague hints in computer logs, backtrack with minimal map data conserved between levels, conserve ammunition, and remember where to find health pickups (randomly generated for each new playthrough), but survive a space station infested with fast aliens and invisible predators!

I noticed that in your list, you give Pinball Fantasies a 10, while Ruiner Pinball only got an 8. What are your reasons for preferring Pinball Fantasies over Ruiner? And, given the perfect rating, would you say that Pinball Fantasies is one of the very best Jaguar games?
Thank you for sharing your opinions!

I know this question is directed to AtariJagPlayer and he can expound, but as a guy that has literally grown up within the pinball business and has basement full of pins, his observation in the fun factor dept. can't be denied. Pinball Fantasies is a much more realistic and truer pinball to video experience. Ruiner Pinball is more cartoonish, unrealistic (everything from the "loud" playfield graphics, to the unrealistic looking flippers, to the double sided playing board in one of the tables, to the triple length playfield of the "welcome to hell" board, the unconventional looking playfield "parts" throughout, etc., etc. Ruiner Pinball is more akin to Alien or Devils Crush for the TG-16. Good games in their own right - just not realistic. Targets which are cartoonish looking sprites, coming out of nowhere and spiraling about the PF Galaga style is not exactly realistic pinball fare. Although my Bram Stokers Dracula DOES feature a "mist" ball dragged by a magnet underneath the PF, but it doesn't "blow up", disappear and grant you a bunch of points for hitting it either. lol

Ruiner Pinball suffers from a couple of idiosyncrasies too, such as a strange and sometimes jerky ball/playfield camera movement, pixelization( sp?) and strange ball physics (as if its skating, instead of rolling across the PF). Overall, Pinball Fantasies just offers a more solid, professional video pinball experience. All of 21st Century Pinball games on all platforms were rather good.

Thank you very much for all that information. It's quite helpful. I would add that Pinball Fantasies (Jaguar) is MUCH more colorful than Ruiner and the overall sharpness of the graphics and smoothness of the animation--and its speed--make Fantasies a superior game to Ruiner, whose basic look is no better than a typical 16-bit game. Of course, everything you said about pinball simulation is entirely true as well. It's surprising to me actually that there are a number of people who think Ruiner is a better game. More idiosyncratic maybe, but better, hardly.

Maybe it's the way the colors are used and mixed I guess that makes it appear that Ruiner is more colorful and cartoony looking. PF does not offend that way. The playfield blends in more and doesn't distract like it does in Ruiner is what I think I'm trying to convey.

I havent played Ruiner yet but I'd have to say it seems PF wants to be a simulator while Ruiner wabnts to be more video pinball.

Thanks for your question!I enjoy both pinball simulations immensely! Ruiner in its own right is a unique game purportedly named after or about a Nine Inch Nails Song (I read that somewhere). Like other posts in response the ball in Ruiner sometimes seems to move awkward or sometimes gets stuck, or the game freezes. Pinball Fantasies includes more table variety, includes more bonuses, and has different play mechanics than Ruiner. Oh ya, and Super Burnout and Brutal Sports football both deserve 10 too!

While the others asked you about your ratings for the two Ruiner games, I have to question your ratings for three other titles:

Iron Soldier, AotMP and Rayman deserve higher ratings, IMHO, and are considered must-haves for the Jaguar by most. Especially since you gave a 7 to Supercross 3D and Dragon - the Bruce Lee Story.

Thanks for the question!

I assume if I owned IS 1 prior to IS 2, my opinion would be different. While they both are pretty fun (who wouldnt want to be a 42 foot tall robot?):), I tend to think IS 2 is a little more polished and smooth. Penguins is a bit difficult for me, but I love those graphics! I love the Rayman music and graphics, but at times the controll is a little unresponsive when trying to make jumps. Supercross is good for a laugh or three since your racer crashes and screams in pain if you are .00001mm off course, but is manageable after players learn the responsiveness of controlls. Dragon is a pretty simplistic button-masher with a pretty neat "fight the shadow guy to continue" mechanic.

When it came out, it was the only 3D fighter I had played till that point. I didn't think it was *THAT* bad at the time, though the guys seemed to dance like hunch-backs and the AI seemed off.

Years later, I went back and played it after SOUL CALIBUR had come out on the Dreamcast. Man, did FIGHT FOR LIFE not hold up well after I revisited. Playing SOUL CALIBUR really exposed all of its flaws (and not just graphics).

Interesting. I found the game a bit large (multiple levels and large floors) but I found it pretty emersive once I got the hang of it. Plus, once I beat the game as one character, I found the others easier.

That's unfortunate! Bubsy looks like a lame total conversion of Zool 2 at first, and the unintuitive controls can be pretty off-putting; take the time to learn his moves and explore that world though, and you'll find a massive adventure that'll really test your twitch-gaming abilities without feeling cheap.

Club Drive, well, it's pretty rough around the edges, but there's some interesting stuff in there; it's worth checking-out if you stumble across a cheap copy.

They're not going anywhere... The whole point is that they're unwanted, so they're sold-off or never purchased in the first place. I'm sure there're a few collectors with five copies of every common cart out there just collecting dust in a box somewhere, but for the most part these are the turds that sit on vintage game store shelves and make the Jaguar look bad.
