Gee, I wish the professors in the college I've had so far were more like you. Bringing an Atari to class...HELL YEA!! I'd become teacher's pet really quick ;)! I would even have to bring my own to class...and possibly donate if I had spares. Look forward to what you accomplish. Good to see Atari in the classroom again. You have my vote.

Take a look at this! It is all free - 100% and used quite frequently in school projects similar to what you are doing!

Many sim cockpits have been produced around this 'game' too!

Not sure if you are interested, but here is a program I wrote for the 2600 that is meant for school. You are welcome to use it if you like. Glad to see people using the 2600 as more than just a game.

Yea, Orbiter is pretty awesome, although also very difficult to learn. My best accomplishment was achieving orbit, landing on the moon and returning to earth without flying off into space, although I did accidentally land in Mexico instead of Florida. Better than the ocean I suppose. :)

I never have tried interplanetary travel - just too freakin complicated...

OK- today was the day. The simulator made its debut and was a hit. The kids really got into it. I will upload picture to the site tomorrow nite.

We did a shortened mission today. The kids had to do a successful lift-off. It was a challenge for many of them, but they enjoyed it. They are already asking when we are going again.

Cliff- I saw your link and will be checking out your program soon. Thanks for the heads up!

No problem. Feel free to use it. You probably know how to build the buttons already, but if you need a schematic or something, let me know. Thanks.

Unless it's a weird angle, that looks like a light sixer in the pics, not a heavy sixer. But I think the light is a better choice anyway since sometimes the heavies have cart fit issues, especially with Activision games.

Awesome project, can't wait to see more pics and how the kids like it. I wish we'd done something like this when I was in school.

How is the C64 version of Space Shuttle? Is it better, maybe more advanced? I've actually never really played either version too much, but this is inspiring me to try it out.

I also have labeled the control switches so the kids understand what they do (as most would have no idea what a color/bw or left/right difficulty switch is). I also color coded the switches to make things a bit easier.
Sounds like you need the overlay.

I didn't think about it at the time I first read this. I wonder if the flight yoke I have would be of use in this project. :ponder:

Don't have Space Shuttle and don't have my Harmony up and running yet or I'd test. Probably too late now anyway. I guess the space shuttle flies with a stick so it wouldn't be so useful in a space shuttle simulator.

Correct, that is a light sixer, not a heavy sixer. They can be differentiated from almost any view except a straight-on side or bottom view (or something in between those angles).

Thanks for the correction folks!

I have not had a chance to put up new pics (what with teaching school all day and then going to school in the evening), however the local paper did an article on us that came out today!

Newspaper article

The stick I have has been working great, but thanks for the thought on the yoke.

No major problems so far. I am looking into an anti-static mat for the floor and I did purchase some anti-static spray for the curtain.

Next fly date is this Friday.

Wow, great article! I love the fact that the TV you picked up happened to be a "Space Command" model... how perfect!

Very cool! I saw the article in the paper today and posted what I found on the forum here before I found out it was already being discussed. Sorry about that! I need to try and keep up with things a bit better here! :ponder:

Update!!

School is coming to a close and my kids a wrapping the year up with physics. We are getting into flight and I just switched over to Tomcat the F-14 Simulator.

This too has been a success. Had to make a new set of control panel labels, but otherwise things stayed the same.

And- yeah Random Terrain that is me!
