This is pretty big news if they do it because I have a bunch of friends with the non-BC PS3's.

If they remaster PS2 games........I think I'm going to be in serious financial trouble.

here's hoping for gran turismo 4 with higher res textures.
...since gt5 won't be out until at least the year 2525.
A rereleased GT game might be a licensing nightmare though. And of course there are no shortage of good PSone games that haven't come out yet either.

I predict the Sony marketing guy is confused. I doubt Sony would roll this program out by letting the news out in an IGN interview. I predict we'll get a clarification from Sony about his statement explaining that he was generalizing and was actually only talking about the appearance of PSOne classics.

I own the God of War Collection and the re-mastering job that was done on GoW 1 & 2 is INCREDIBLE. I would be very tempted to once again purchase a select few PS2 titles... even though I own a 60gb unit with PS2 capabilities... if these games were given the same treatment as GoW.

They make more money by forcing people to rebuy the games than by offering backwards compatibility. I'll probably buy all the Ratchet and Clank games if they're offered.

i was going to say the same thing.i was pissed when i found out my 40gb ps2 wasnt backwards compatible.i just ass umed it was.but i just went and bought a ps2 slim.

Dammit Sony should just release an update for software backwards compatibility at the very least along side these downloadable titles. I would imagine they owe it to the people who bought 130 million of their goddamn Emotion-Engine funboxes.

As I said in another thread, I believe that the days of BC are behind us and that the next batch of new console releases will have no BC at all. Why? Because the companies have learned that there is a profit to be made in selling older games.

Why should Sony or MS or Nintendo give something away... i.e. backwards compatibility.... when they can make big $$$ by putting these titles on PSN, XboxLive, and the VC Channel? I think that all the companies have come to the conclusion that if people are willing to spend money for pretend clothing and pretend furniture , they will also open their wallets to purchase old games.

Backwards compatibility was never there because these companies are generous. The benefits backwards compatibility bring in trying to get your console into as many homes as possible remains.

I don't see why they can't do both. But I personally believe that after what we've witnessed with PS2 and Xbox compatibility in their replacement consoles that it's just going to be too expensive to be practical this next time around.

Why is it being assumed that these would be remastered on PSN? GOW Collection was remastered but I seriously doubt that any remastered games will be on PSN. The emulation patented last year likely includes a texture smoother anyway.

But this is great news that PS2 emulation is back on the table. Hmm, my future eye watching for...Draken:The Ancient's Gate, Silent Hill 2, MGS 3:Snake Eater and Shadow of the Colossus on PS3.

Already having a crap load of PLaystation 2 titles in my library, I find it hard to believe that Sony would spend anytime remastering the ones that are being mentioned in this thread.
Just to name a few: Shadow of Collosus was a good game, but remaster it? Why, the Ps3 will smooth it over and it will look better than it did on the ps2, but it didnt look bad to begin with.
Metal Gear Solid 3? Hasn't this game been remade already and repacked with some other Metal Gear Games? There should be a lot of copies of this floating around for $9.99.
Draken? If you own a ps2 you can buy this for $4.99 from stores that still have em lying around used.
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, Couldn't cost ya more than $9.99 to pick up a copy and own it.
The fact that the ps3 allows you to play ps1 games, yet people are still paying to download ps1 titles amazes me...(I've another couple hundred PS1 games I'm gonna list in my sale thread)

With so many game stores out there, wouldn't you rather own the original? You just have to find it. I remember people arguing over the fact that they would not pay $19.99 for a copy of Final Fantasy VII factory sealed new on the shelf, cause it was a greatest hits title....But PSN users can pay $9.99 and not own a thing, but a digital copy?
Go figure...I for one will not be downloading any ps2 titles from the PSN ever....

Maybe if they started mass producing any of the 100+ RPG titles released for the ps2, it might be worth it at $9.99 to boot...

I enjoy a clutter free gaming zone that only requires a fat harddrive and a wireless controller, it's a great feeling knowing I don't have to get up off the couch anymore for the 30+ games I've bought off PSN. And soon I'll have all my favorites *exit cackling evil laughter*

Fair enough, but 5-10 years from now when your harddrive breaks and Sony refuses to let you re-download them for whatever reason, surely you'll be big enough not to cry on the forums about getting what you paid for?

Call me a lazy ass but I cant stand playing a game off media anymore. Its so much easier to click on a menu on start playing rather than digging up the CD. I still like to have a physical copy of a game but like I said its so much better to not have to go dig into your collections to find a game to play.

Lately though what I do is leave the game CD out near the console if I want to play. Last few weeks I've been playing my Dreamcast quite a bit so I leave my copies of Soul Calibur and Alone in the Dark next to my Dreamcast. It helps but having a digital copy is great if its cheap. 5 bucks for a digital copy of a good PS1 game is peanuts (Final Fantasy are exceptions), I dont know what they plan on charging for PS2 games, probably 10 to 20 bucks IMO.

On the other hand. Companies can screw you over as Mord mentions. I ranted about a similar situation with Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2.

I see what your argument is but if the games are available for a cheap price I don't mind, I've wasted money on worse things. And if the PS3 breaks in 5-10 years I'll just buy the new XNintendony720X and waste some more

If Sony is going to price them the way they price digital downloads on the PSP Go.... well, I'd expect 29.99 and up. I still can't get over how they're matching the DD prices to umd prices for the same games.

As for leaving the games near the console, that's what I do as well. I have most of my systems fairly well organized so it wouldn't take too long to look over and choose something new to play but lately when I pick a game I tend to stick with it until I'm either sick of it (a game that can't be completed anyway, like say Tetris!) or I beat it. As such, I just leave the games out under or near the TV next to the system.

If my PS3 would play PS2 games I'd much rather buy them on disc but it doesn't. I'm trying to figure out why anyone would buy Halo through XBox Live for $15 when they can get the disc based version at Best Buy for $10. I guess they do it so they don't have to leave the couch.
