Update: Rudimentary SIO flasher works. Now development should be far less cumbersome
(tossing flash chips around all the time is no fun)

Update: done full DD (read, write, format), percom. Track buffer under way. Ultraspeed SIO needs debugging.
Stay tuned, it's closer :)

Hey after quite a while :)
University work got in the way of development, I'm sorry for the delay.
I am reinstating work on the project, n eed some more time but the end is closer.
If anyone got fed up with waiting for the 1050E firmware, then sorry - it's all my fault.
But now future looks promising. Stay tuned

Great News, I would also like to purchase a few of those boards when they are ready.

Cool.

Nowadays more and more A8 Atarians use floppy-emulation, like SIO2SD, SDrive, SIO2PC, SIO2USB, etc. and yet there are at least two new 1050 upgrades (the 1050E and the Super/Mega-Speedy by mega-hz) under development. I like that, since I still use my 1050 every day. Here is a thread with pics about mega-hz`s project:
http://www.abbuc.de/...tart=260#p44301
His upgrade will not only support all the Speedy firmware (like Bibo-DOS, HSS-Copy, Super-Speedy), it will also be able to work like a Happy or Turbo upgrade...

Yeah, that's great. We're not competing though :) The more hardware, the merrier :)

its a pity that mega-hz project is using 65c02 - this is not something you may buy off the shef

65C02 is required for Speedy, and - thanks to Western Design Center - easily available :-)

You can buy new 65C02s (in DIP, PLCC or TQFP) from Jameco, Mouser, Coltek, Dema, ... - a lot easier to get than NMOS 6502 chips...

so long,

Hias

really?
Thanks Hias
is there any easy source for 816 chips?
in poland they are as good as none
some years ago they were quite obtainable, but no more
if i had to redo 1050e to use another cpu, i would go with motorola mcu instead for bus compatibility, or just ignore it and use avr

Same as 65C02 - still manufactured by Western Design Center and available from the same companies. For example Mouser has 55 of them on stock (in DIP).

BTW: A list of distributors can be found on the Western Design Center website.

so long,

Hias

  • I can't wait for this to come out, I can use at least one. I like having my 1050 available and the more it can do the better! Any idea on cost?

This could be useful to me, as I have about 20 or so 1050's which I used with stock Atari setups. I would like to order a couple of these when they become available.

That's remarkable -- someone making new 6502s. Just can't kill the good stuff. :)
Now If I could just find someone making a cheap SPO256-AL2 then I can fix my Cheep Talk voice synthesizer.

I'm not sure if this was discussed, and how it compares to this topics development project, but there is always the "Happy Upgrade option". Might be good for you.

Update: debug session with oscilloscope planned but no time on my hand right now. Actually what's missing now is ultraspeed 68k and track buffer. anything else is working
and just needs putting it all together.
I promise myself (and Candle even more to be honest, I'd had it delayed already) to finish it this summer.
Sadly, too many things with life got out of hand. The patient ones will be rewarded though :)
Cheers
