I guess I don't view the recent downtime or "screw up" by Sony as big of a disaster as others might:
I've owned a PS3 since launch and during that time, my console has been out of service ONCE for 24hrs (this clock issue) and as of today its still going strong. So, being without my PS3 for 24 hours and having my gaming temporarily interrupted isn't a disaster.
As for purchased downloaded games being unplayable in the future, I guess I don't view this as a disaster either:
I go to "5 Guys Hamburgers" and spend $10 for a meal.... that's $10 I'll never see again and I've got nothing to show for spending it. I go to the movie theatre and spend $18 (ticket + popcorn + drink).... that's $18 I'll never see again and I've got nothing to show for spending it. I spend $75 a month for DirectTV.... that's $900 a year I'll never have again and I have nothing to show for spending it. And on and on.... I knew full well when I spent money for Pixel Junk Monsters or Critter Crunch or any of the many other games I've downloaded, that they might not be available to play forever (equipment does break, servers do go down, DRM licenses expire, etc), so why should I complain if this happens? I've had a blast playing them, they've given me hundreds of hours of entertainment, and they cost me a fraction of the price of commercial disk-based games!!
For me, the bottom line, is I've gotten a hell of a lot of entertainment out of my PS3, Xbox360, and Wii and while there have been some events or equipment failures that have interrupted my gaming and caused me momentary frustration, I've still had a blast these past years and don't regret ANY of my purchases.
Nothing in life is perfect and neither are any of the gaming consoles or companies.
