I played FF1 to FF12 in the past, and was really looking forward to the next-gen episode coming out on the PS3. So I played it at a friends place last night... but after 3 hours or so there still was not a single challenge to be found in this game. Battle system so far seems to be boring.. it barely feels like being in control. The leveling systems is non-existent which is one of the weirdest designer choices of the last decade, because it doesn't feel rewarding to jump into all those battles. No open world. A story which after 3 hours did not manage to catch our interest because of the flaws stated before. We both felt betrayed after waiting for so long for this game. But since I don't own a ps3 and I won't be playing this game, I do am curious where to find the interesting parts of this game. What are your thoughts?

I'll probably get it when I get a PS3. I've heard a lot of negative things about it, but I cannot deny the sense of curiosity I feel for it. Might be a waste of money, but there's only one way I can really know for sure.

I was definitely intrigued by this game when it was announced for the 360. Unfortunately, the last FF game I enjoyed was 9, and all of the games since then have been more like 8, which I didnt care for.

I have played a few of the FF games(FFVII,FVIIII,and FFX) I just got FF XIII and am not dissapointed so far(about 3 hours in) Wish it had less cutscenes, but overall very good.

I did rent the FF13 yesterday and did played for couple of hours on my PS3. One thing graphic is just amazing, but seem boring and for the battle system is seem odd than any previous FF series. The last true RPG game is FF X.

Looks utterly dull. Thoroughly unlikeable stereotypical characters AGAIN and the same dreary meandering between cutscenes, grinding as you go.
I'm so glad that the western RPG has flourished lately. I'm so done with the JRPGs now, and FF in particular.
It's a shame that such a promising genre got so stifled.
I'm skipping FF13 and instead I'm going to do Mass Effect 2 again. Now that's how to do an RPG.

I do wonder what kind of games Square would give us if they weren't so neurotic about their damn player demographics. In submission to the almighty sales chart, we are consistently delivered effeminate, happy-go-lucky protagonists, staggering quantities of pointless fan-service (the entirety of Advent children?!?!), and perhaps now with XIII, significant inroads towards casual accessibility? That's a contradiction right there - what's casual about the notion of a 60 hour RPG?

Wouldn't it be grand if Square released a box, inside of which you got a board, dice, character sheets, and a rulebook? Final Fantasy XV, coming soon for your TABLE™ home entertainment system. FRIENDS® not included.

The IGN review said you have to play 10+ hours before the game actually lets you explore the world. That's just unacceptable. I want a real RPG experience in a FF game, not an interactive movie.

I just don't get what's going on with Square-Enix right now. Star Ocean International was a pretty bad game too.

The last FF game I played was X on the PS2.
I liked it pretty well from what I recall (Except that stupid sport game they had, and the ridiculous amount of cut-scenes). I think I bitched about it in a thread here on AA years ago. At one point, I booted up my save to play a bit before dinner. I "played" the game for like 30 minutes, but only actually took control of my character enough to run from location to location for about 5 minutes. Stupid. It was the closest to a television program a video game has ever got I think.

I've also heard FF13 is crazy linear. Another minus in my book. I'm waiting for Two World 2.

I like the graphics, though I haven't played it. I don't much care for the new rpg's the last decent ones from square were parasite eve, ff tactics and vagrant story and geez that was 10 years ago. Where's the current gen tactics?

I haven't played it yet but I've been watching my fiancee play it. I've been enjoying the story quite a bit. Plus it's a great looking game as well. I might actually play this game through to the end when she's finished. The only other FF game I've enjoyed enough to play all the way through was FFX. The other FF games I have played (III, VII, VIII, IX, XII) were dull beyond belief, imo. Ah well. To each their own.

Yeah, the good ol' days... one good thing about FF13 is that it forced me playing Vagrant Story again.
I really would sacrifice to a god to get Vagrant Story 2 out...

i like it alot. its nice to be able to play a final fantasy that doesn't make me question my heterosexuality. i like that all the endless grinding and **** is gone, the battle system is simplified, etc. jrpgs lost me in the ps1 era due to needing a mathematics doctorate to understand a battle system. but between this, star ocean 4 and white knight chronicles, i'm genuinely enjoying jrpgs.

I've got to admit, I never played through Chrono Cross because the battle system was so damn complicated. Colors and rings and techs and what the fuck? I gave up. Cried a little, played Wii Sports and told myself I wasn't a total failure.

That's what ALL turn-based combat RPGs seem to boil down to, when you really think about it.

Not so. The paper-and-dice approach has infinite possibilities for adventure and direction given a proper GM. Far from linear gaming.

Plus there's usually pizza.

I completely agree.

Keyword: Proper GM.

Dont forget the beer. Oh and for those who are curious, try to get your women in your life to play tabletop
games. Not only will they like it but you'll all have fun and have something to do together other than watching
each other play single player JRPG's.
