What games require a second controller, like Riddle of the Sphinx? In that game the second controller chooses which item you want to use. Did Space Shuttle require the second stick?

I think Raiders of the Lost Ark requires a second controller (not entirely sure, not a big fan of the game).

Defender II- you need the 2nd joystick to drop the smartbombs! I loved to play this game back in the days with a friend of mine!!!

A few of them:
Omega Race requires the Booster Grip to be added to the first controller
Star Raiders, Cobra Strike, and the Sweat prototype use different types of controllers in each port
Basic Programming requires both keyboards, so do some parts of Brain Games
Space Shuttle uses only one joystick in addition to most of the console switches.

Defender II
More:
Spy Hunter (came with a plastic tray to mount 2 joysticks side-by-side, with one rotated so the fire buttons are adjacent)
Star Raiders (Joystick + Video Touch Pad)
BASIC Programming (2x Keyboard controllers), though it's not really a game.

I think the the only other 2 joystick games not already listed are "Radar Lock" and "Video Life", you guys covered the rest....

I recently asked a similar question for the purpose of creating some hacks that used 2 buttons on the genesis controller.
A couple not mentioned here that "use" the second joystick button, though don't strictly "require" it... Solaris and Star Voyager.

Something I found helpful was getting a Foot Pedal controller for these games. Personal preference, I suppose, but it is a lot easier to use than two joysticks at one time. They are easy to come by and you configure which pedal does what.
eBay Auction -- Item Number: 260554456469
For example, Defender II is a lot easier when I can push the pedal for smart bombs.

Doh, I forgot Solaris.
I'm not really sure Star Voyager counts....The instruction manual does mention trying to play a 2 player game by yourself for added challenge, but you could do that with many 2 player cooperative games...does that really count as "needing a second joystick for a one player game"?

I think this feature is absent from the manuals, but it's definitely there.

In the 1 player game the second joystick button lets you shoot your alternate weapon instead of having to flick the difficulty switch.

Interesting, 'learn something new every day....
Defiantly not in the manual though...(I did just re-read the manual and saw no mention of it)

What about Star Raiders where you needed a joystick and the video touch pad or equivalent keyboard controller? Also I remember playing super cobra and using the B/W switch to "pause" the game, my question is this: Super Cobra has to be one of the early adopters to use a pause feature, anyone know if this is the earliest Atari game to use a pause feature?
