Important Note: This weeks competition is over and no further scores will be accepted.

Hey Pengo! Isn't it cold work racing around that ice rink, rearranging huge ice squares? Why do you keep trying to line up those three jewel embedded blocks? What's that? You say you do it for a fortune in bonus points? Sounds like a neat nest egg! Can I help too?

Scoring Points in Pengo
  • Crumbling an ice block - 30 pts
  • Squashing Sno-Bees between ice blocks:

    • 1 Sno-Bee - 400 pts
    • 2 Sno-Bees at once - 1600 pts
    • 3 Sno-Bees at once - 3200 pts

  • Destroying a frozen Sno-Bee by:

    • Running over it - 100 pts
    • Squashing it with an ice block - 400 pts
    • Crushing an ice block containing a Sno-Bee egg - 500 pts

  • Lining up jewel blocks:

    • Against a wall - 5,000 pts
    • Inside the ice field - 10,000 pts

Hints and Tips

The Manual

As always, you really should read the manual. In case you don't have the manual, AtariAge has a typed copy available online. Here are the hints it provides:
  • Eliminate as many SnoBees as possible with a single ice block, for potential time bonus points.
  • If Sno-Bees are chasing you and you come up against an ice block, don't lose time--run around it!
  • Try to put a block between you and pursuing Sno-Bees. Then use that block to crush the little nasties.
  • For higher points, remember to crush frozen SnoBees with ice blocks rather than by running over them.
  • The best strategy for lining up jewel blocks is to make a wall out of the regular ice blocks, then push the jewel blocks against that wall.
  • Each time you begin a new round, analyze the maze. If it's easy to line up the jewel blocks, do that first. If not, destroy the Sno-Bees first.
  • Remember that regular ice blocks are worth 30 points each. So after aligning the jewel blocks, start crushing the regular blocks for extra points. But don't destroy them all before you kill off the Sno-Bees, or you'll have no weapons left!

We played this game before in the High Score Club, check out that thread over here.

It should be worth noting that for the longest time, Pengo has been my favorite expression in place of the word 'Bingo!'

Emulators are allowed... give it a shot. Download the rom here. Even has a "play it" link so you can play in your browser.

I have emulators. I just don't believe in using them for competitive purposes. To me it's like having an asterisk attached to your score. I made an exception once for the SMS club because of their shortage of players. If I do use it, then I'll only post once for participation pts.

We've had many people win who use emulators. Some games we've played were never released on a cart, so it was either emulator or a Krok/Harmony cart.

I've even had a few unreleased carts made. ie- Sinistar, Xevious, Bloody Human Freeway.
It's like putting a 350 chevy into a '32 Ford replica. That may be ok, but not putting it in a real '32 ford.
Of note: it's somewhat difficult to get a final score shot unless you use an emulator pause feature.

Actually, you earned 11. You got "best tip" bonus too. I think your total should be 228 now. :)

54950 - I can be a dummy. I was playing the wrong ROM on my harmony cart. I think the version I was playing was a 1983 prototype. The actual cart is easier.

Edit: Yep, I was playing this version.

Woo Hooo! In addition to my HSC score, I just crossed the 1000 post mark. :)

Although I like Dragonstomper as a game better than Stargunner.
