I thought it was a pretty good joke. It appears to be poking fun at hollywood for taking *any* idea, anthropomorphizing the characters, and making a cash-in movie about it. Another way to tell it wasn't real was they used the actual Pac-Man logo at the end (even though it gets modified later). Hollywood would have just eschewed that completely and made some grim, dark, extreme, modernized logo that didn't look anything like the original (see Transformers and GI Joe). That's how predictable they've become.
