Read some posts on various forums that the new firmware update for the Wii adds nothing of importance but simply kills most homebrew capabilities. Homebrewers beware!

Yup I read it on GBA temp:

"After a long wait, Nintendo finally decided to bring out a new system menu update for the wii. Just like with 4.2, this update does not add any new features and is solely intended to block homebrew."

* Deletes the Homebrew Channel and DVDX, title IDs HAXX, DVDX, JODI, DISC, and DISK.
* Now uses IOS80.
* IOS254 stubbed BootMii is deleted.
* Fixed Bannerbomb less stupidly this time.
* Added IOS58.
* HackMii Installer Userland+Syscall IOS exploit removed
* NANDFS privilege escalation fixed
* ES_AddTitleFinish now checks the signature(Trucha Bug Restorer and similar won't work anymore)

I believe I'm still on 4.0...why would i want to upgrade to something that offers no more functionality and wipes out the best feature of the Wii (homebrew).

I'm still on 3.2. Nintendo will have to pry my USBLoader from my cold dead fingers.

I load any IOS I need for a new game manually. That way I get the updates without these shenanigans.

Those that have Wii's with the vulnerable boot1 should take some time to back up their nand - that's your get out of jail free card.

Not only that but beware of New games, like Red Steel 2 because it wants you to update to 4.1 before you can play.

Looks like I need to pick up another Wii to play new games like Red Steel 2?

Does this affect the Fatal Frame 4 homebrew patch? I don't have anything like the homebrew channel, just that.

I'm quite glad I upgraded to 4.2 (with the latest version of homebrew channel) before this came out. With 4.2 I can at leas use homebrew.

I guess the new Zelda game will require 4.3, so I really hope they find a workaround till then. I also hope they will make a workaround for DVDx, as I want to keep my Wii clean for cIOS'es. I know certain homebrew developers are moving away from DVDx, so I really don't hope this is the nail in the coffin for it.

Games don't care about the Wii menu software level, they just have requirements that certain IOS versions are installed.

You can manually download any needed IOS versions from Nintendo on your PC and install them on your Wii with a wad manager. This avoids Nintendo's lockdown tricks.

I'm running 3.2, and I've played games as recent as Super Mario Galaxy 2.

That may be a good sign, at least.

However, certain games comes bundled with a system update, which must be installed in order to play the game if the Wii firmware is below a certain version number. As SMG 2 runs on the same engine as SMG 1; it may be pleased with 3.2.

One example is Red Steel 2, which forces you to update to 4.1 (as stated in a post above).

Ah, fair enough. I'm in for a pound and not a penny...

These days I use a usb loader, which doesn't boot update partitions, and also have my modchip set to do the same.

I also have New Super Mario Bros running fine, and that one has a 4.2 update on it as well.

"We are Nintendo thy gaming god. Thou shalt not tamper with thy gaming system to play thine homebrews. Thou shalt buy software that we deem worthy for you to use and play. I have no intention of updating. I understand that Nintendo is going to try and crack down on unauthorized use of their console but their updates should include new features at least. The last two updates provide nothing to consumers.

I have been developing on the Wii for a few months now. I would rather be able to continue my development than play any new game. It would be pretty frustrating to get locked out of HBC right now. Given time though 4.3 will be smashed to bits just as 4.2 was and HBC will be running all over it. Nintendo is fighting the same battles MS fought with the original Xbox and MS lost every single time.

In all honesty, with the way the console makers attack homebrew like clockwork this generation, if you're going to be setting up a Wii or PS3 etc for homebrew use you should just save yourself the bulk of all this trouble and buy a dedicated unit just for that purpose. Makes it a lot harder for Nintendo to brick your unit if it never gets connected to their servers and never sees a commercial game. (But I'd still recommend backing up stuff in case someone puts a commercial game into the unit accidentally.)

As of I know, the curent homebrew channel supports up to 4.2, so system menu 4.1 isn't that bad. That was the last update which fixed something without doing too much to prevent homebrew at least.

If you have a Wii with a vulnerable boot1 Nintendo can't lock you out of bootmii; you can revert anything updates Nintendo does, providing you have a backup.

No need for a second dev system in that case.

Usually you can't access the store unless you update. Store is useless once you have homebrew etc. ;)

If you really need to, you can get the store running with:

As always, read the instructions carefully, back up first and assume the risks.

Everythings working great right now, so I don't think I'm going to bother.

I stopped buying stuff from the shop a while back. When my investment in virtual games started to become significant, the DRM issues around it started to bug me.

Plus, I agree on your statement about homebrew replacing much of the need for the store. Probably why Nintendo is fighting it so hard.

I wish they'd stop and consider us faithful devotees who still have the old cartridges and don't want to buy them again. Okay, that was semi-tongue-in-cheek because I'm sure we are a very small minority. Nonetheless, most of the games I bother to play on the Wii emulators are games I already own and enjoy. If they really think I'm going to buy Blaster Master again they are mistaken.

Besides, I support VC games that were never released in the states (Sin & Punishment, SMB Lost Levels, etc.), are cost-prohibitive to buy on cart (Super Mario RPG), or are on a system I have no interest in collecting at this time (TG-16). If they cut me out of the shop channel, they are depriving themselves of this revenue.

I know they have to plug any revenue leaks they can but instead of fighting a losing battle they should create incentives for buying VC games. Maybe have an online hi-score record or something that's attached to a player's Mii.

You know when the Wii first came out and I downloaded a few VC games like Super Mario Brothers and Super Ghouls n' Ghosts my nephew came over saw the downloads and said, "Wait....." paused for like a half minute looking at the snes unit right below the wii, "you have those games already, why the hell did you buy them?!" :dunce:

Thats what got me to homebrew.

Heh! I have some points left on my account is why I ask. I'm still pondering snagging a Black Wii. Maybe I'll update one to the 4.3 and leave the other offline.
