I'm a newbie ps3 owner and have a question about software updates. Are they recommended or needed? Any info would be very helpful,thanks. Didn't get any manuals with mine. Got it without any.

You can't go online without them. Otherwise they're not needed.

If you want the latest and greatest content you'll want them, even if you don't need them.
For instance, if you buy and download Pain from the Sony Store, the game you will be downloading will be considerably different from the game if you update to the latest version. (7 updates)

Be sure and pack a lunch, in my experience updates on the Sony network aren't what you can call speedy by any stretch of the imagination. :cool: I still recommend them though.

And I swear I've had firmware and some game updates take as long to install as they did to download.

There are games that need newer firmware to load. So sometimes you need to update the firmware in order to play a game.
