Looking through the various threads on the proto’s forum, it amazes me how much stuff (games and otherwise) remained or remains unsold/released

But it does beg the question, why hasn’t AA don’t a database of Proto’s and rares and who owns what (based on the current knowledge of what known proto’s/rare’s are available or known to exist)

It would be nice to feature all atari formats as i am sure that there exists rares/proto’s on other atari platforms (and not just the usual suspects, namely 26/52/78/jag and lynx) and perhaps feature non atari formats in their own section

And if possible find out how who owned that particular rare or proto came to be in it’s possession (there must be some interesting stories out there) as well as the story behind that particular rare or proto and why it didn’t come into the marketplace and the story surrounding it’s development

Perhaps the owners of some protos would rather not like the world to know that they own them? There's a bit of privacy that must be respected when it comes to one of a kind items.

The real answer to your question is: time. We don't have it. There are much more important things that need to be done.

We don't like to be bombarded with messages like:

"Please release XXX"

"Why are you not releasing XXX?"

and my favorite:

"GIMME THE ROM IMAGE OF XXX!!!!"

Ugh, I can imagine, tons of preachy page-long e-mails about how you're "not supporting the community" by not releasing a game person X wants...

I still get those messages even though I sold my prototypes off over a year ago. As Allan said, some people are 'nice' about it and at least make a passing attempt to make their demand sound like a question. Most people however pretty much sound like what Dutchman 2000 put.

Eh, I've never had many problems with people asking me to release my stuff, and I'm coming up on 100 NES protos soon. Granted, most of my stuff gets released over time, but I really don't find the random PM asking to release something every once in a while to be all that taxing.

If there were a section with protos, I'd look through it.

Just to point out tempest/dutchman et al, i am not interested in whether the proto/raqre is dumped or imaged to emulator format, whilst i 'accept' that people may wish to investigate that possibility (as stated by tempest/dutchman) that wasn't the point of the post/thread

I'd say it's more likely a different time. No one got (rather, gets) more shit for "not" releasing protos than Dream (even though he's released countless protos over the years), and most of the animosity stems from his NES stuff.

I just recently dropped $2.3k on Chuck Yeager's Fighter Combat and I have yet to get one nasty or demanding PM telling me what I "should" do with it. Plenty of comments about how people would love to be able to get their hands on the ROM (which they will), but nothing obnoxious.

Huh, really? I've got a healthy share of NES protos, I assume 2nd or 3rd largest collection around. You can see my list and my brother's list here: http://www.nintendoa...&threadid=24859 , though I have 9 more protos in transit. With 16 unreleased games, it's a decent collection.

When you say different group of people, do you mean that because I'm not known for protos to this community, that I'm not pestered by the people here as other Atari-based proto collectors are? That could definitely be possible, though I never thought of vg communities acting very differently to their own.

None that I know of, though there is plenty of bandwidth dedicated to the subject:

http://www.neswarpzone.com/pst.html . Now kept up by National Game Depot, I pester him ever once in a while to let my brother and myself take over.

http://www.unseen64....tegory/nin/nes/ . I've given a ton of information to Luca over the last few years, most notably in the articles found here: http://www.unseen64....-nes-cancelled/ , http://www.unseen64....-nes-cancelled/ , http://www.unseen64....-nes-cancelled/ , http://www.unseen64....nes-unreleased/

http://www.nintendoa...d=35&entercat=y . Matt and I contribute much to this sub forum on NA, at one time releasing a free proto ROM to the community once a month. He still maintains the "Nes proto owners" and "other proto owners" section of the forum.

http://www.nesworld.com/mirror/nr.htm . Though not specifically protos, more just about unreleased games, the information that Martin wrote here is one of the better resources for would-be NES games. I am in the process of scanning all of my protos for his databse at nesworld.

Beyond those, I spend an awful lot of time talking about the subject on the DP forums proto forum, on Assembler forums, and a bit of time over at The Lost Levels. Hopefully someday I'll get around to maintaining a site dedicated to the subject myself.

Edit: More specifically, if you were looking for the "who owns what" information that the OP was looking for, my link from The Warp Zone contains that information, though it is outdated. My brother's list aove on NA is about as close as you'd get to something current: http://www.nintendoa...&threadid=24859 , though it only contains information from those who want it known publically. For example, I have a list of much of what Dreamtr owns, but I'd be an ass to list it without his consent, and it's more than likely inaccurate as it has been some time since I received it. Van Halen recently outbid my on the Virus proto that ended for $2.3k the other day, but since he wasn't going around mentioning that info we didn't add it to the list. Fair enough?

You seem to have missed my point. To create and maintain such a database would require a significant amount of work. If you want to see such a database so strongly, I humbly suggest that you be willing to do some of the work involved.

That was a reference to the Chuck Yeager flight sim game. I believe he says that when you crash.
