Wii Zapper Question

Does anyone here use the Zapper to play FPS games?

I've been playing around with Call of Duty: World at War and Modern Warfare Reflex to see if I suck less at the Wii versions of these games than I do at the Xbox/PS3 versions. Both games said they were "Optimized" for use with the Zapper so I tried it. Man, it felt clumsy and uncomfortable to me as I kept getting lost trying to hold the thing, aiming and firing, while at the same time moving my thumb around to try and find the A button to run or find the + to throw a grenade or find various other buttons for actions.

I didn't try the Perfect Shot as I believe I would have the same problem, maybe worse, with trying to find all the buttons on the Wiimote with my thumb.

I'm just curious.... does it just take a lot of practice to use the Zapper and then it becomes a really fun way to play a game or is it really not worth the effort of trying to use it? The Zapper worked well with House of the Dead, but seems to be really clumsy for an FPS game.

It's more comfortable (and certainly more natural) to play with a gun attachment. I like the 'Perfect Shot' gun myself, ($10 at walmart) it's just a pistol, not that whole big bulky thing and feels better to me, though anything really will work fine for you.

I also got a nerf gun for the game Nstrike, it's cool, but I typically play with the pistol still.

Same with the packin for Links crossbow training, and the Big game hunter gun (I just prefer the small size of the perfect shot.

You don't need a gun to play gun games, but I prefer one, and think it adds to the game a little bit.

The problem with most of the games though, is the control setup. The gun doesn't actually "shoot" at what your aiming at, it's just a glorified joystick (and could easily have been done with an analog stick)

For games made from the ground up just for the wii, they work from OK to pretty good. But if it's a multiplatform game, you got that unnatural "walking around" thing to contend with. The wii just isn't really suited to that type of game.

It would have been better if it had a more traditional gun, and you actually shot where you aimed (and walked with a stick/button instead of by aiming at the edge of the screen) rather than aiming where the game wants you to shoot (which I've seen can be pretty far off from proper)

Eh, tried the Zapper, hated it, wondered how Nintendo managed to sell a clumsy hunk of white plastic, moved on. There is only one true Zapper - the one from 1985.

For the games that don't require manipulation of the wiimote buttons, I use the Perfect Shot. However, I haven't noticed it improving my accuracy or anything like that. It just feels like a light gun rather than a wiimote :)

But do you guys have any problems with the Wiimote buttons when using the Zapper? I mean, I tried World at War and found it really difficult to try and find the A button, + and - buttons, 1 & 2 buttons, etc with my thumb while dodging, shooting, crouching, and strafing. Does this just take practice to get used to or is it just a pain or am I just a fumble fingers?

IMO, Nintendo didn't intend you to use ANY of the wiimote face buttons while playing a gun game. I find it difficult at best to use any of the buttons beyond the trigger. Accessing the face buttons is easier without a gun controller of some kind, but that kinda ruins what experience there is to be had with the Wii's lightgun games.

Honestly, Nintendo should make a dedicated game GUN for the system, even if it just works more or less like the wiimote (or even exactly like it) it would make sense to produce a mold that would give you the gun grip, with all the buttons easily accessable without having to use another hand, or take your finger of the trigger. I know a LOT of the gun games could be fixed, if you had easy thumb access to the Dpad and could use that to move around with instead of the clumsy slow "aim at the3 edge of the screen" setup they use now. (though they could also use the nunchuk stick to move with and the buttons on that to move forward/backwards, haven't seen a gema do that yet though.)
