Tempest
I find it really hard to believe that Coleco was planning on releasing Dragons Lair fro the 2600. Anyone know if that was true? I have no evidence that this was being planned, but why do you find it hard to believe in principal? The Coleco Adam and other 8-bit home computer versions of the time only bared a passing resemblance to the laser disc original, so there's no reason why Coleco couldn't further pare down those concepts into an Atari 2600 version. I can't see Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Cliffhanger or Badlands being even remotely passable on something so primitive as a 2600. Laserdisc games were the pinnacle of gaming tech in their day and you just can't reproduce those graphics on a 2600. The graphics are almost never the point on the VCS; it's the gameplay. Obviously the system is nowhere near capable of anything close to the originals' level of eye-candy. But what makes you think that the gameplay of any of the laserdisc games is not achievable on the 2600? Let's be frank, please: gameplay on most of the laserdisc games was a craptastic process of trial-and-error rote memorization. Dragon's Lair is infamous for having many scenes that are completely identical in appearance, or simple mirror images, yet the actions needed to pass the scene depend on which number in the sequence you're up to, rather than any onscreen clue. I don't see why the VCS couldn't do a game that's graphically reminiscent of Dragon's Lair, but with better gameplay. If you prefer eye-candy over gameplay, then by all means please don't play any VCS versions that become available. I'm guessing had a laserdisc adapter been released for the 2600, it would be similar to what the MSX version looked like. Basically the system was used to overlay some trivial display (score, lives, directional arrows, space ship, etc.) over the laserdisc video. The 2600 graphics would have been just fine for something like this. Tempest
Chris++
Am I wrong, or are some of the prior posts mixing up "unreleased" with "found"? They're two different things, unless I'm missing the point of the thread, which is of course always possible. One of my absolutely favorite unreleased games is Save Mary. I've always found that one to be underrated; it "feels good to play," so to speak, like Superman and Dodge 'Em and several others that any of us could name. After some practice, that is...as with other games, good thing for your prototypes website, or I would never quite have known how to play it! I can't imagine how many times you had to play to figure out what all the power-ups do!
A.J. Franzman
"Found" is a subset of unreleased, meaning you can now download the binary and play the game or burn your own cartridge, though the game was never widely distributed at retail by its original developer or publisher. "Found" also includes games that were thought to probably have been unreleased at some prior time but are now believed to have been released in very limited quantities. I think the only categories in the list for games that actually did see wide release at retail, should be those that were not VCS games and those that were reportedly "coming soon" or otherwise known to have been in development, under a different title. Those with different titles should all have "ALIAS" in the Notes column. Edited October 17, 2010 by A.J. Franzman

+Psionic
My understanding is that US Games started PP but went out of business and Probe 2000 accuired the rights. The real question is did Probe then start over from scratch or just finish US Game's code? Matt, I think you need to eat your Wheaties... As you know, the Pink Panther 2600 game was originally develeped by Wickstead Design Associates for Fisher Price/U.S. Games. It was apparently turned over to Probe 2000 (NAP/Magnavox) when U.S. Games was dissolved, but exactly when and how this occured isn't known. As I've mentioned in the past, Jim Wickstead himself was unaware that NAP had ever acquired the rights to the game, and JWDA certainly had no royalty agreement with them. But the version that Probe 2000 was going to release (which is the one we've found) is the game developed by Wickstead Design. Now, the Atari 8-bit version and any other ports, that's a different story. I don't know who comissioned those.
SpaceDice2010
I guess that answers it. But wasn't the US Games release suppose to be the first cart that they were releasing under a ram/rom chip? Does the Probe 2000 have that? But, this list confuses me to no end as I have no idea why there are Colecovision games listed on here that have been pretty much proven not to have been announced for the VCS. It just seems like an alias and company is missing when it comes to Pink Panther.

Here are the working titles - US Games - Trail of The Pink Panther - Supposedly an 8kRom/2kRam combo cart Probe 2000 - Pursuit of the Pink Panther - (no idea what the Rom looks like) Those are announced CES names. The game apparently underwent several name changes (which is certainly not unusual). "Trail of the Pink Panther" was, at the time, the title of the most recently released Pink Panther film. The only promotional literature I've ever seen simply referred to it as simply "The Pink Panther" or "Pink Panther: The Video Game", as here... http://www.digitpress.com/archives/cc_vcs_pink_panther.htm

CRV
Interesting. I wouldn't have guessed that Street Fight was even started. Hopefully you'll get a reply soon. I e-mailed him about two weeks ago. I don't have much hope. I mentioned something about those Atari 7800 sales sheets. I'm sure he had no idea what I was talking about. That's where I found "ICC/TJS Industries" (and "ICC" and "ICC/Dave Barbour") listed. ICC was the company that apparently was developing 7800 Electrocop. I'm guessing ICC was subcontracting to TJS. Rom Hunter
This month's update. Myths, Rumors and Legends: Atari VCS 2600 Cartridges and Programs Reported as Unreleased Last updated 2010-Dec-19 Key: ALIAS game is better known by another name. Details on following line. BKA = Better Known As; usually the last known name of an unreleased game. See the entry for the BKA name in this list for more info. FOUND game exists and binary has become readily available to the public FOUND- most complete known binary not publicly available, but earlier is EXISTS game prototype cartridge/board, EPROM, binary or source code has been discovered or is believed to be in a private collection but the binary is not publicly available MAY EXIST at least one credible source confirms that at least some coding of the game was started - perhaps as little as a 1-screen static demo ALIAS+EXISTS Space Mission was a working title shown in ads for what Atari released as Star Ship. The game was also released by Sears as Outer Space. However, one Atari-branded cartridge bearing production Space Mission labels has been found. EXISTS+ALIAS two copies of the Pink Panther game are believed to exist. The game is known by several different titles. FOUND+ALIAS Computer Chess was the working title of Video Chess. The only known prototype cartridge, which has a production end label with this working title, has additional features that were removed from the released version for unknown reasons. VAPOR it is believed that no coding ever took place for this title Titles without any entry in the NOTES column may never have been started. If the NOTES entry is a system name or "8 BIT COMPUTERS", that title was not a VCS game. If the NOTES entry is a different publisher, the game was released (or intended for release) by that publisher. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title Publisher Mfg # NOTES ------------------------------------- -------------- ------- --------------- 3-D Asteroids Atari CX26105 3-D Genesis Amiga EXISTS 3-D Ghost Attack Amiga EXISTS 3-D Ghost Attack (for Amiga Power Module) 1100 APM UNRELEASED 3-D Havoc Amiga EXISTS 3-D Havoc (for Amiga Power Module) Amiga 2110 APM UNRELEASED 3-D Rubik's Cube Atari FOUND 4 in 1 Atari CX26137 FOUND 8 in 1 (AKA Supergames 8 in 1) Atari CX26193 FOUND 9 to 5 20th•Fox 28 in 1 Atari 30 in 1 Atari 48 Hours Sega $25,000 Pyramid Great Game Co. It's also possible that they never existed at all.) AFIIK Tempest found out that Honker Bonker was the WIP title of Holey Moley. Super Stunt Cycle was the WIP of Motor Psycho (AKA Motorcycle) and carries model number CX26141.
Tempest
AFIIK Tempest found out that Honker Bonker was the WIP title of Holey Moley. I'm not 100% sure about that anymore. The theory seems sound, but I have no proof. Also we're fairly sure that the Unknown Universal game is actually an Unknown 20th Century Fox game. Might be Six Pack, but that's just speculation based on the genre. Tempest
Rom Hunter
Tempest, Super Stunt Cycle (CX26141) has nothing to do with Stunt Cycle, right?
Tempest
Tempest, Super Stunt Cycle (CX26141) has nothing to do with Stunt Cycle, right? Correct. Super Stunt Cycle is just an early name for MotoPsycho. You can see that in this prototype of the 7800 version: http://www.atariprotos.com/7800/software/motorpsycho/11388.htm Tempest
Rom Hunter
Thanks! AFIIK Tempest found out that Honker Bonker was the WIP title of Holey Moley. I'm not 100% sure about that anymore. The theory seems sound, but I have no proof. Well, if you're 100% sure that the model number of Holey Moley is CX26130 and DP is 100% sure that the model number of Honker Bonker is CX26130, then it's the same game. Honker Bonker info, according to DP: Listed on Atari's Master Part Number List. Also referred to as "Honker Bonk" in internal Atari documents, with the comment, "Program proceeding - dates look good. Working with CCW". Edited July 26, 2011 by Rom Hunter
