xg4bx
All it uses is a usb dongle. http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.elotrolado.net%2Fhilo_review-ps-jailbreak_1473364&sl=es&tl=en&hl=&ie=UTF-8 It apparently really works. I don't advocate it but it's pretty big news on the game site I frequent. Mods- If this is inappropriate feel free to lock/delete link. Ironically the current debate on the site (n4g.com) revolves around what they'll do now, they can't very well disable usb support and this device is updateable. Hmmm I never doubted the PS3 would be cracked (they ALL fall eventually) but I never saw it coming in this form, sounds like a nightmare for Sony. Lendorien
Well, that site suggests that one has to update to firmware 3.41 in order for it to work. It doesn't work with older firmware. That suggests that something in the current firmware allows it to work. All Sony has to do is buy one or two of these things, find out what it is that allows it to work and disable it. In addition, one blog post I found suggested that the only reason it worked was because they were using it on a debug machine. Regardless, it's supposed to go on sale for 150 at the end of the month. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/08/the-ps3-jailbroken-usb-hack-allows-homebrew-copied-games.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20014184-1.html http://spong.com/article/22243/PS3-Jailbreak-Maker-Attempts-to-Convice-Youtube-Plebs And a seller: http://www.ozmodchips.com/ps-jailbreak-worlds-first-ps3-modchip-plug-and-play-p-68.html

Supposedly the dongle disables forced firmware updates so a person would have to intentionally update their system to make it not work. I just wonder how many people are actually going to buy this for $150.

I just wonder how many people are actually going to buy this for $150. Hell no, not for $150. That's the cost of 2.5 brand new games, and I'm not planning on purchasing 2.5 more games for it for a long time. I'll wait for the $20 v2.0 model. I'm sure most of us will eventually buy a ps3 piracy device--probably just not now. Once Sony/PSN stops supporting us, I believe it will be the only way to make PS3 anything more than a huge black brick. As is, I don't want to get my nice free psn access taken away if they find something like this on my system. goldenegg
It was only a mater of time before this happened, but I truly commend Sony for the barriers they put up to make it take this long! I'm definitely not shelling out $150 for this. Even if it drops in price, I'd only pick it up if decent homebrew becomes available. There's no way I'm wasting drive space backing up my PS3 games. xg4bx
heres more info from eurogamer- http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-vs-psjailbreak-article the theory is that it was an "inside job" because it was developed on a debug kit used to fix corrupted firmware, something the general public really doesn't have access to. "Now it would appear that the hardware has also been "liberated" from Sony's repair and test labs. This may sound somewhat implausible, but in a world where PS3 Slim photos circulate months before the launch and final units appear in a Philippines marketplace, anything is possible. Besides, the exact same thing happened with the tools used to service the PSP just prior to the PSP-2000 launch in September 2007." Yeah, you'd save a whole $1.
HammR25
It's $169.99 Australian which is $151.90 US. That's unless of course you want to buy in bulk. http://www.ozmodchips.com/ps-jailbreak-worlds-first-ps3-modchip-plug-and-play-p-68.html

madmax2069
I don't get close to piracy (it only hurts the software sales and makes it to where people don't want to make games because of the pirates), but i would be up for some homebrew though, i am all for homebrew.

It's actually more cost effective to just buy the games! Oh, the irony! I could care less about being able to play modern backups.. What interests me is the homebrew capability via source ports and emulation of past consoles. The PS3 is a powerhouse, and if it's cracked properly, there will be no need for my old XBOX when it comes to emulation.
xg4bx
More trouble for Sony- The leaked SQL however contained illegally obtained information for the PS3, such as service manuals, various of other documents and information, and programs/SDKs - all now spreading over the internet like a wild fire. http://www.ps3hax.net/2010/08/sony-sensitive-files-for-ps3-illegally-leaked/
hex65000
How can I put this? Good. A closed system like this is such a waste and will help the retrogamers of the future. Could you imagine the nightmare if reverse engineering the 2600 had the same level of obfuscation? Bleah. Hex. HammR25
It's still going to be a cat and mouse game I wouldn't want to mess with. Sony will come out with new firmware that new games require to be played. The jailbreak developers will then come out with their own firmware updates.....etc....etc.. Even if this thing was $20 I wouldn't want to deal with the hassle.
monzamess
Like you said, this will be like the PSP CFW, a cat-and-mouse game. However, on the PSP, it's worth it. The system is portable and I don't want to carry around my UMDs and also get lower battery life running the UMD drive. Those arguments don't hold water for me for the PS3; it doesn't go anywhere and even I'm not too lazy to stick a disc in it once in a while. Maybe if/when some cool homebrew comes around I'll consider one of these devices. Of course if you want to pirate games, yay!
Tr3vor
Do what you want cuz a pirate is free, YOU ARE A PIRATE! I don't see a need for it, but I dont have any hacked console anyway, I'll stick to emulation on my laptop.

The others are just hardware manuals. Schematics, parts lists, and some mechanical drawings. Somewhat nice to have, but hardly anything that's going to open up the PS3's DRM. Video
Needs to come down in price a litt...lot. But cool. Still don't see a PS3 in my near future, but eh, nice to know if I do. hex65000
The DRM will come. Having a fairly good understanding of the hardware will prove useful for those who aren't just all 'about the warez'. I'd like to get a gander at the schematics and mech drawings myself. I know it's out of my league of knowhow, but educational just the same. It's just such a complex system and my skills aren't that mighty. There's also the assumption that the schematic is a bunch of custom ASICs and that documentation didn't get leaked. Now that would be a boon for everybody BUT Sony. Hex. [ Is mostly brute force and bubblegum... ]
