You can also CLICK HERE to go to the official Metroid web site and see three more video's (click on the 8-17-2010 Update link) including the excellent Samus & Me video.

The more video's I see of this game, the more I want it's launch day to come!!

My reservations are almost confirmed as to why this game could be terrible.

First review:
http://www.gamenewshq.com/news/611575

I still have hopes that it will be at least OK but considering that pretty much the entire Team Ninja team left when Itagaki left (to join him at Valhalla Games), I knew that when Nintendo announced them as the new developer the game has a good chance of being pretty crappy. I'm a huge Itakagi fan and I follow his team and what projects they do pretty closely so I know a little bit of history of the "old" Team Ninja.

The new Team Ninja just completely dropped duds with the latest Dead or Alive and the seriously censored version of Ninja Gainde 2 Sigma on PS3.

:(

Then again, die-hards will buy this no matter what. I consider myself a Metroid fan but I'm not a (new) Team Ninja fan.

Edit: Just read some more reviews. Seems like some people are disappointed and others are not. I guess this is one that you either love or hate. I'd like to try it out myself and make my own judgement so I guess my hopes are up a bit.

I have heard rumors about one part of the game that bothers me: you cannot move in first person mode; its used strictly for scanning, locking on, etc.

I had severe reservations about Metroid Prime before its release because the gameplay was changing from standard, "historical" side scroller Metroid gameplay. Maybe I was just showing my "bias".... you don't mess with history, just change the plot/story and leave the elements as they've been. :P

But I have really enjoyed each of the three GameCube-Wii Metroid titles and it is the style of Metroid I now want to play.

Then along comes Team Ninja and it looks like Metroid gameplay may have changed again. On one hand, my bias is showing and I have reservations; on the other hand, the video's of Other M gameplay look so damn good that I want the game NOW.

Maybe I'll be disappointed as hell; maybe I'll quickly get the feel for the changes in Other M and enjoy it as much as I've enjoyed Metroid Trilogy; maybe it will be totally natural and instant enjoyment.

Time will tell.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I always thought the Metroid series was sort of a "niche" series, not really a sales juggernaut or a "mainstream" series like a Mario or Pokemon or Zelda. Metroid was geared to a particular gamer and gamer style and was always a kind of "I love it" series or "Get it away from me" series. So I'm not sure that Other M will deviate from that, but maybe I'm wrong about the entire series and its popularity.

I'm getting this. I read the ars review and the parts that are disappointing or annoying (hunt & peck puzzles in first-person view, cannot use weapon upgrades until "authorized", etc.) don't sound bad enough to dissuade me. :)

I'm trying to think of this as original Metroid with first-person capabilities and a fleshed out story as opposed to Metroid Prime with gimped first-person. I love the Prime games but it's nice to see them try something new to keep things interesting and fresh.

I just hope the storyline stuff isn't overly long or heavy-handed. I liked how they did it in Metroid Fusion: short monologues in between levels. I'm not a fan of drawn-out storytelling in games (just let me play!) and I'm not particularly fond of 3D-rendered characters (especially human ones where the eyes look dead, the mouth looks like a black hole with teeth, the skin looks like wax, and the lip movement looks completely unnatural) so I hope these things aren't an issue or don't drag down the rest of the game.

I'll be buying it this friday. I've been mostly ignoring videos and reviews so far, as a fan of the series I want to judge this one by myself :)

Thats the Ninja Gaiden effect! It does look cool. Again, I'm not so sure. I hated it when Metroid turned 1st person with Prime but it worked for the most part. (Not mentioning the insane backtracking and difficult boss fights). I enjoyed all three Prime games but mostly the 3rd and last one.

I'm not a (new)Team Ninja fan, sucks that it sticks in my craw that these bozo's were picked to make the game but if its good then its good and I'll have to tip my hat to them.

My big worry is this: I've heard it's very linear. Is it? If so, I probably will not buy it. I dislike (extremely) on rails 3rd person games. If you get to explore, I will likely get it. If not ... it ain't Metroid imho.

Anyone here far enough in to tell yet?

I don't know where you got that info from, it's neither on rails nor linear. It's just like any other Metroid game before it: Once you get new weapons, new passages open. And you either go to the next mission target or anywhere else on the map...

Yeah, I heard it in two separate reviews. And I wondered if that was the case (hence the question), as it seemed like a weird design choice for a metroid game.

Looks like this is a buy for me then :)

The game continues to go from one awesome moment to the next. It took me 10 tries to defeat the 2nd big boss, a very tough and rewarding battle with an absolutely great learning curve once again.

Before that came some quiet over-the-shoulder-camera exploration part with great atmosphere, not unlike the early Resident Evil games. It's great to see how the game switches the perspective totally seamless in order to maximize the depth of the experience.

Enjoying it a great deal. Not big on the story early on, but it starts to pay off later. Not sure how much free exploration there is as I have been playing straight along the story track. I do not like Samus talking so much or being so emotional, ugh, she used to be a hardass (or at least I could imagine she was), now she's all weepy.

All in all, game is great, boss fights are spectacular and the difficulty is challenging and makes you think, but not impossible.

I'm enjoying what I've been able to play of it so far. However, that elevator shaft part is really ticking me off! I can't seem to figure out what I'm supposed to do. I assume I'm supposed to stay on one of the ledges to avoid the crash of the elevator, but then how do I avoid the gripping tale of that chameleon like lizard thing climbing up the wall?!

blast the two spots that are holding the elevator quickly and the rest should take care of itself. The lizard monster should never lay a tail on you.

I've been climbing to the top and shot the elevator once, then I let me drop a bit into a small side niche of the shaft (on its right side). From there I shot it the second time, the Elevator then fell down past me, killing the beast :)

First time I shot it twice - hanging right under it :o :skull: :lolblue:

There you go. The game is going to get much much cooler as you go. I just finished the main game, but there is a wide open post-mission that is as much fun as the story part.

Enjoy!

Whoah! I just fought the monster that the little rabbit thing got transmogrified into
Spoiler
:o :o :o

That battle must've been the best graphics I've seen on the Wii ever!! The whole game actually, I think its graphics top everything else on the system.

I don't get that ~80% metasore with 60's ratings from Destructoid and Game informer. Any rating below 85% is complete nonsense. 88%-92% feels about right, the game belongs right next to Zero, Fusion and Corruption. (I didn't play Super yet :ponder: ;))

Finally got this a couple of days ago, after long anticipation since seeing all the preview videos.

I'm still pretty early in the game, having only got to the main elevators section (took me forever to find that tunnel in the dark to get to that computer room and activate everything), but I'm enjoying it so far. The story stuff is a bit drawn out, and Samus is portrayed "softer" than I previously perceived her to be, but based on the previews, I was kind of expecting that. Game play is very cool. Different but fresh. Truthfully, I think it's gonna be tough to top the Prime trilogy though, but I understand they wanted to capture the essence of the classic Metroid games in a 3-d environment with this.

So far, so good.

I played with the game for about an hour at a friend's house tonight. It was a lot of fun. It has that pick-up-and-play quality that I like, although I struggled to remember how to fire missiles under stressful situations. Near the end of my play session, I was beginning to get the hang of it. :)

The strangest thing I find is the lack of energy capsules. You can just recharge your missiles and life energy by standing in one place and charging up, which I figure will take longer and be harder to do once I have a bunch of energy tanks and missiles collected. I do miss picking up energy capsules, the game doesn't feel as "Metroidy" without them. At least the missile expansions and other such upgrades are still there, discovering and collecting them is as fun as it's always been.

I'm looking forward to playing this game again! :)

I just started playing the game, maybe into it about an hour, and am enjoying the hell out of it so far.

The only thing I've found that I don't like is the "Adam hasn't authorized it yet" part of the game. I know there must be a reason Samus goes along with this and maybe it will be explained when I'm further along in the story. But damn, for Bad-ass bounty hunter Samus to do only what Adam tells her to do is just like Jack Bauer doing only what CTU tells him to or James Bond only doing what M tells him to: a bit unbelievable.

I agree. But having Samus lose all her equipment at the beginning of a game again and again and again is unbelievable all the same. I even kinda thought this "authorized" system was some kind of insider gag for us people knowing how the game usually works. Admittedly it's quite silly when she rather dies instead of unleashing her full weaponry :lolblue:
