Let's say "the Atari version" is only slightly better than all others.

Possibly the coder was a tripple genious? Managing the colours, the fading of the hills, the speed.... and well, the real independend 6 layers of depth, with 3 different colours....

All other version tried to go there. Mostly with just drawing lines to look like an additional layer.

You see the difference between real layer drawing and "just line drawing" ?

I think I might have delve deep within the layers tonight, when I have access to my computer. ;) Unfortunately, my 130XE is down, probably with some blown memory chip, so it will have to be via an emulator. :/

it is not so bad at all...

Hm...

Flat Board, flat Robot, and less depth, harsh mountain appearance, no additional light FX.....

Really, today people wouldn't buy a game by less differences to the "superior" ....

The C64's version is just easier to play. Possibly the hard playability made Koronis Rift NOT beeing shining as a star as it should.

IF people want to have a Game that is superior and recommends an A8, it's Koronis Rift. But, to "see" this, people have to think like people today do.

For me, thinking about Koronis Rift and playing it back in the 80's , I also don't remember it as such a "STAR" . But, seeing all other versions on other 8 bits, clearly shows the unbelievable: The A8 version is "years ahead".....

  • 3 months later...

There is actually one game available since the 80s that outperforms all other 8 bits of the same age as the A8 (early 80s) .... in colours, game speed (fps) , sound, whatever....

But exactly this game is not shown in Youtube. I do not mention the name intentionally. I wonder if people can realize which game this thread is dedicated ;)

Done ! ;)

It's because we C64 illuminati have taken control of google, youtube, facebook and 98% of all porn sites* on the internet in an effort to repress the Atari cause.

You can have myspace though because it's crap.

@Heaven/TQA,

I have read on Atarimania there would be a problem with copy protection on PAL version ;

Andreas Magenheimer - 06/08/2006Please note, that the european version of Koronis Rift is not fully playable due to bad copy protection. The guys at Activision placed the copy protection on a used data sector, ouch... (at least thats what I read in some german magazines)... -Andreas Magenheimer.

I have not seen a big difference of speed between NTSC and PAL version ... On the PAL, the music is slower, but apparently the animation is at the same speed... I may be wrong icon_rolleyes.gif

I knew it! :P

Speaking of the video.. that was the "lame" way to lose a pack inside the ship with the robot haha (not that it happened to me..)

I always wanted to have a guide with pictures of all the ships and an explanation of all the races and parts in that game, the manual doesn't have much info.. anyone have any idea if something like that exist? I know that the map of the levels are in some site, I have the pictures somewhere.

About the parts I remember generators that let you move faster, better (and different) shields and weapons, two radios (that played music!.. one of them was the melody from ballblazer), things like heavy weights (that make you very slow), a map of the level that let you track ships from different types (races?), etc.

Also, I remember getting to level 20 but without being able to finish the game, was that possible in the final version of the game? (does that version exist?!?)

Regards.

I once found a nice manual on c64-wiki.de; they also have maps of all rifts along with statistics for every item in the game (don't know if the data matches the Atari version 100% exactly).

Actually, the C64 version runs a tad faster....

Let's check, why:

Pictures tell more than words. But, as you might see, The A8 version shows more depth. Addionally, the c64 version looks more like someone is flying over the field, while on the A8 version, a vehicle is moving.

It's exactly, what you see at first, when starting the game.

You also see that the game(s) were successors of the RoF engine, where it's the same: The Atari version gets more into "depth" details.

I wonder how fast the Atari version gets, with the engine of the C64 version.

i would assume that the c64 would not be able to render a 3rd layer even in another color (in a reasonable speed). the screen layout for bitmap gfx is more complex than the bitmap layout. further on A8 they use Mode10 with 2 pixel per byte which makes it again faster to calculate.
