Rumors are hitting the web that Nintendo held a retailers conference in Japan the other day and announced the upcoming release of Super Mario Collection Special Pack. The title is supposedly being released as part of Mario's 25th Anniversary and features that are rumored to be included are:

- revival of Super Mario All-Stars
- may be a direct port which includes the same titles as Super Mario All-Stars
- includes "Super Mario History 1985 - 2010" bonus item
- bonus item booklet recaps 25 years of Mario history, showing previously unseen development materials
- soundtrack CD with music from Super Mario Bros. through Super Mario Galaxy 2
- for Wii
- limited availability in Japan, only in 2010

The game has NOT been "officially" announced by Nintendo and no U.S. release is hinted at.

CLICK HERE for an article talking about the Collection.

Speaking for myself, I'd jump all over this on launch day especially for the soundtrack and book.

I would be thrilled with this or just putting it on Virtual Console.

No

I don't even believe Nintendo has officially confirmed it to the general public yet in Japan even (Although it's certainly happening, they just haven't issued a formal announcement yet).

I would think it has an excellent chance of being released over here. We've seen Nintendo enjoy a good bit of success with past examples of similar rereleases here in the States, so I would hope we're going to get it as a general retail release too (The two special Zelda releases for the GameCube, the NES Classics lineup on the GBA, all the SNES ports on the GBA, etc.).

It was never going to be a Virtual Console release (Why sell for $8 what otherwise would cost $21 to buy individually), so I think this is a great idea to get this out there while not damaging the Virtual Console sales of the original versions.

If they really want to make American gamers happy, they should sell this as a $50 package over here with a SuperNes version of that Super Famicom styled classic controller Japan got. That would really be something special then.

They could sell it for more than $8 on the Virtual Console.

I really hope this does get released worldwide. If it ends up being a Japanese only release, hopefully it will still have English menus. Either way, I'll pick up a copy.

Out of all my Wii games, I only bought one on launch day.

This would be #2, if it's released stateside.

Obviously

They could even sell it for $1,000 on the Virtual Console if they wanted to. But considering that only imports, a NES title that had outside licensing, and cd releases have carried premium price points on the Virtual Console of 100-200 additional points, there's certainly no precedent to it carrying anything but the standard 800 points price for domestic SuperNes releases. And with the same 4 games in their NES incarnations costing 2100 points, it seems safe to say it's chances of seeing release on the Virtual Console were slim.

And how many compilations are on the virtual console for you to think they would not have premium pricing?
There is certainly no precdent for SNES compilations that leads me to believe they would charge only $8.
