Firmware update and third party controllers

Earlier this year I asked if anyone had any of the Mad Catz fightpads because I was thinking of getting one for my PS3 (the reasons why I want the fightpad and not a full fight stick are in my original post).
Now I am hearing that the newest PS3 firmware update is killing some third party controllers and it has me glad I didn't buy one.
But according to this website the fightpads are, so far, not affected by the firmware update.

Tested them myself.

So I'm now on the fence about buying one. Sure, they might be okay for now, but what's to stop Sony from killing their connectivity next time?
Anyone got any recommendations? Should I just stick with my Tatsunoko vs Capcom fighting stick and forget using anything for PS3?
If so, I'm sad that I have now discovered a sweet looking Chun Li fightpad from this site.
