I watched this 15min video, shot by a fan, of the Nintendo World Grand Re-Opening and couldn't help but think that over the years, Nintendo really has created something special:

Watching all the people who attended the re-opening.

Watching the number of people dressed in costume or just Nintendo clothing.

Watching people taking pictures with DSi's instead of cell phones or video cameras.

Watching the reception that Miyamoto and Reggie received.

Watching all the display's of Nintendo history.

Watching the shot's of the store itself and thinking of all the toy's, movies, TV Show's, board games, etc that are based on Nintendo properties.

Whether or not you like the Wii or DSi, I think you have to admit that no other video game company, past or current, can match the popularity of Nintendo. They really have created a world that people have fun in.

I was at Videogames live this past Saturday. My second time. Yes, its special and sometimes a bit scary. LOL

Ralph Baer was skyped live and they had this girl that played the Zelda and Mario themes on a flute.

Not just Nintendo, video games as a whole are pretty special.

I find myself curiously aroused by the new "25th Mario Anniversary" Wii package. The Motion Plus built into the controller, and "free" New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Not too crazy about the red coloring, though. The new Donkey Kong Country game looks appealing, too. The allure of the Wii (to me) is not so much the motion control stuff, but the stuff I always liked with Nintendo: Mario/Donkey Kong stuff.

Same thing happened at the Video Games Live I went to several months earlier. However, they couldn't get Skype working properly (to which they joked that it would be working had Ralph Baer created it himself).

Thats cool, he came on and talked about a few things and his phone rang (family members trying to call) and it was a laugh. Great stuff!

Thats what bothers me. There's basically two generations in my opinion. The Atari generation and the Nintendo generation. Sadly Nintendo takes the popularity and at Videogames Live it was no different. There was only a small section at the start of the show for the Atari age era people and the rest of the show was Nintendo era and modern (with a little Sega thrown in). They had a nice Tron segment and Ralph but thats about it for the classic period (70's-mid 80's)

It just seems Atari takes a backseat to Nintendo. Not that I care too much cause I like Nintendo but I grew up with Atari damnit! Those are my roots!

Yes, well it's all good I guess. I agree though, there is so much Atari / classic era stuff that could be shown.

I don't disagree at all.

But I think the gaming "culture" has changed within the last 20 years, in that today its the games that matter most where in the past it was the actual systems. I mean, if you say Nintendo, pictures of Mario, Zelda and Pokemon come to mind. But say Atari or Intellivision or Colecovision and no real definitive character comes to mind, but the systems themselves do.

The system war's of yore were bloody, from George Plimpton ragging on Atari graphic's to "Sega does what NintenDon't." Today, the manufactures rarely take on one another in print or video ad's... I haven't seen Sony or MS or Nintendo running an ad that directly says what a piece of crap their competitors are like Mattel, Sega, etc did. Instead they give you reasons to buy their system such as telling you of the exclusive games or exclusive DLC's or how great their latest ad-on's are or how versatile their online services are.

I started my gaming hobby with Atari, Intellivision, Odyssey, Coleco, Atari 8bit and AtariST and those were some of the best gaming times I had. I still have all the systems and hundreds of games for them along with incredible memories.

But for whatever reason, Nintendo seems to have created its own "culture - world" that is not only popular beyond belief but lasting. I don't believe that Nintendo's impact on gaming is greater or better than that of Atari or Mattel or Coleco or Magnavox, but I do believe that it is special.

The thing I love so much about Nintendo is the entire world of wonderful characters they've created. Even if the third party developers completely dropped support, Nintendo would survive on their own characters, properties, and merits alone. I believe that is something no one could argue. :)

Ya. This is why I get amused with the current climate of "Watch out Nintendo ... Steve Jobs is coming after you!!!! He's going to take away all your business" in the press right now.

For all of Jobs' charisma, ability to make sexy products etc, I think he'd be in for the fight of his life because his company has never been a game shop. He'd be going against a company that has many of his company's same strengths *AND* some of the best game developers in the world in-house plus beloved franchises as their own IP.
