Well, I got hold of a switchbox thru Crossbow (thanks dude!) and I had a power adapter from Radio Outhouse.. Err, shack, and hooked up my 5200 to see if it would work...

It didn't. Not so much as a click from the power adapter, so now I gotsa try getting a hold of a 5200 power supply as soon as I get the cash. Grr...

Poor Inky...

If I had a spare, I'd send it to you ASAP. I'll keep a look out for ya, but the stuff is pretty hard to come by here.

Is it possible to use a Sega Genesis power supply on a 2 port 5200? I've heard of people doing it, but I'm not sure if I'm that brave. I've got a 5200 2 port coming to me in the mail, but no power adaptor or controllers or anything, although it does work. Should I just try to get a real adaptor?

On another note, do Wico 5200 controllers break as easily as normal ones? And did that thing where you use the Playstation controllers ever come out?

I'm actually 'in the midst of a transaction' to get one of these powersupplies as we speak. I just hope that the machine works. But since I paid nothing for it and a 2600 adapter, I'm not too plussed. I'll just get one on EPay at tax time if need be.

Nope. Actually, I don't think very many controllers broke as easily as the 5200 ones.

Okay, maybe I'll just order one of them then(expensive though!). I'm happy about getting a 5200(fedex tracking says I'll have it Friday), but I won't be able to play it until I'm able to get a controller. I haven't decided yet if I'll save up and get a Wico, or just try to get a normal one to hold me off(they're kinda expensive too though).

Inky, the PSU is in the mail ! I had no idea how freakin heavy they were until I saw the postage. :o

Hopefully you should have it by the weekend.

This might help you out. I was just on ebay and saw this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/...item=1943465203

I'd bid, but I have about 20 controllers already.

Enjoy the system. the 5200 is one of the best home systems out there.

I now own that. :D Thank you for the link! I hope it works, but it probably won't    At least it comes with a game and parts though.

I don't think theres any differences between 4 port and 2 port power supplies.

Actually Uber...there is a difference...and it has to do with the voltage and amperage I believe. However, it doesn't matter which power supply you use in a 5200 becasue the voltage regulator will compensate regardless.

I do want to express my concern on something. Inky the power supply you tried before...did you at least get a power LED indication on the 5200? If so...then you have me very nervous. Because getting power to the 5200 but no picture is a symptom of a blown op amp and possibly the transitor next to the power connector on the Switchbox. I tested the one I sent you prior to shipping but who knows what could have happened since then.

If you get the 5200 power supply and still get nothing at all...but you do get an LED power on indication...then I will send out the other spare switchbox I have. But if your not getting any indication of power on the unit...then the 5200 itself or the power supply might have problems.

Incidentally. You can get power to the 5200 and never hear the click of the switchbox...as would happen on a bad switchbox.

I guess I am just nervous that something happened to that switchbox so I really hope the power supply comes through.

The power supply works 100%, I tested it before I put it in the box and it is a 4 port power supply (11.5V) !

There was no power indicator on. I didn't realize there was a difference in the power supplies between 4 port and 2 port. I was trying it at 9V, and not 11.5. The Radio Outhouse power supply makes me nervous anyway. I'll wait for the one from CPUWIZ and test that one.

I think the spare parts alone made that deal worth it. Who knows...the controller may actually work. Wierder things have happened. The game is just filler the seller probably wanted to get rid of.

Even if the game is just filler, I still needed it and it's a free game :)

*sigh* I got the Power Adapter from CPUWIZ and a game from oesii today, and hooked it all up and the darn thing STILL doesn't work. No light on the LED.

I noticed that the cord from the 5200 had som electrical tape around the connecter to the switchbox. I removed the tape, and it looks like someone had re-soldered the tip on the cord, so I may have a dead 5200...

*sigh* I got all excited over nothing...

Is it a 2 or 4 port? If it's a 2 port, replacing the wire won't be that difficult.

okay well then this is a different symptom then what I was talking about. I know my switchbox I sent to you was good. It played a quick round of pitfall2 on it before boxing it up. No power to the 5200 is a problem on the 5200 itself. As to what I don't know off hand. But the switchbox routes the power directly to the 5200 through the RF cord. The switchbox guts are really only there for physically flipping the relay on or off. You won't hear a click from the switchbox unless there is a game plugged in and the 5200 is taking the power. You should be able to measure if the power is coming off the switch box, and on the 4 port the RF cable is soldered to the main board. Not fun to replace but no impossible either.

Hmmm. The LED still doesn't go on. What methinks is that because of the condition of the cable that either

1) The cable itself is bad or
2) The badcable fried the 5200 long ago.

I wish I had access to a voltmeter so I could see if power is coming out oftheswitchbox.

Inky as I was saying before...the switchbox is actually a passthrough for the power. The 5200 4 port model has a coil attached to the RF cable on the inside that filters the power from the video signal. The signal going back through the cable to the switchbox is what signals the switchbox to relay to the On position. If you want...I will send out my other switchbox to you...but I will request that you send that one back to me once you receive it. So I can send out another working switchbox...but if that one doesn't take care of the problem, then either send that one or the first one you got back. Eitherway...I would like to have one of the switchboxes back since if the one I sent to you did fail in shipping (Unlikely since they are pretty dern sturdy) I should be able to repair it and you can then keep the other working one. I would send you my primary switchbox except that I did fix that one..and I don't know how well a job it was repaired...hehe...so I use it as my primary in case it died on me since I had others in spare.

Let me know if you want me to send out the other switchbox. It will at least confirm that it isn't the switchboxes and would then have to be the 5200.

This has got to be the oddest, weirdest thing ever. The controller works fine! It really has no problems at all, I can move in all directions, it works good(well, for a 5200 controller :P ) It smells kind of weird, so I'll clean it, but other than that it works great. I can not believe it, now I can finally play my 5200!
