Those Swordquest games pissed me off. They were not adventure games as Atari defined adventure games (Adventure/Superman). They were just a maze of rooms with poorly done, horrible, horrible, horrible, offensive, cheap ripoffs of various arcade games. I felt like Atari spit on us, punched us in the stomach, and kicked us in the balls all at the same time.

But you must admit, being able to gutpunch, ball-kick and spit on someone simultaneously is incredibley hard to do, but Atari pulled it off ;)

The 2600 never had the hardware to do the 2.5D top down view of of Zaxxon the way it was meant to be played. They compromised the game too much just to get something on the store shelves with the Zaxxon name on it. It would have been better if they hadn't made it at all.

I don't see why there's so much hate for Zaxxon on the 2600. I LOVE Zaxxon 3-D on the Sega Master System, and it used the EXACT same point of view, granted the 3-D glasses make it that much cooler, but mainly I have a much better idea of how high I am, and how far to the left/right I am, just makes more sense to me to use that viewpoint. I suck at Zaxxon (arcade) but LOVE Zaxxon 3-D (Sega Master System).

It plays more like River Raid than Zaxxon, only River Raid is better.

Off The Wall not having paddle support pisses me off. If I'm going to break down The Great Wall of China Breakout style then I want to do it with a paddle. It also pisses me off that there wasn't paddle support for every game that only had back and forth movement. Space Invaders, Galaxian, Demon Attack, Communist Mutants from Space,... should work like Astroblast.

I'm gonna go ahead and add Donkey Kong Jr. I still haven't beaten the third stage. But what really annoys me is how poor the movement is. Games like Jungle Hunt and Pitfall have such fluid, maneuverable characters. DK jr barely moves and when he falls, he floats for a sec then falls slooowly, and then real fast. I hate games that drag out the death sequence. Pitfall II is especially brutal. DK jr's movement kind of reminds me of Spelunker for the NES.

Oh no you di-int. Superman rocks. I find the real key is is getting used to using the subway. Once you know how to ride it to the prison, you're set really, the bridge and phonebooth are so close to the prison that I wonder why the subway has so many other seemingly useless exits/stops.

Except of course for getting to the Daily Planet after capturing the gang, and fixing the bridge.

My real question is why Superman would have to ride the subway in the first place... thats a few panels I dont remember ever seeing in a Superman comic, him riding the subway to get across town quicker. :P

I just thought of another one, Berzerk, omg... it's hell, especially on game 9. Sometimes shooting out lazer fire barely misses the robot, or I get caught in a crossfire, sometimes a robot will be right next to me starting a new screen and BUZZZ!!!
I feel like a rat trapped in a maze, with robots and a smiley face, ready to pounce on me!

I find myself swearing a lot, when I lose a life....lol. This one I never reached 7ks yet... probably never will haha.

Kaboom!
Is also difficult, the most difficult paddle game for me, and maybe of all the Activision games. Although, I did reach the patch score passing 3,000 mark.

I like Superman,

I think they made it more confusing on purpose so.. when you set your time, you can do things different to beat your best... if it was easy to figure out... it would be boring and too easy to complete, right?

It's not so much confusing because Superman can fly, so even when you get lost, flying in one direction will get you where you need to be eventually...

Amidar. The gorillas (or whatever those things are supposed to be) kept getting me and I could never develop an effective pattern to the mazes. It quickly went on the never-played heap.

The Gorilla would be you, and he looks like a Long sleeve-shirt with two eyeballs!

Miner 2049er. Terrible collision detection, controls, graphics, and the most irritating music in any 2600 game, ever.

Plus, they couldn't fit all six levels on one cart, so they actually made a sequel.

The only one that really jumps out for me is M-Network's Super Challenge Baseball. A friend of mine would beat me probably 9 out of every 10 games, even though it was my game. There were times when I'd get so frustrated I would throw things and shit. Even though I was only 8 years old, I still get utterly embarrassed every time I think of that. Glad I don't hang out with that guy anymore. :)

Learn to bunt up the third base line. It's nearly impossible to defend against, and you can just bat around, and around, and around.

To this day I wonder what the programming staff was doing when they came up with Earthworld!

I would've thought the Swordquest idea came from Marketing, but turns out I was wrong! I guess there's nothing wrong with the core idea, really -- it's the execution: there's just no game there.

She thought the boat was boring so she made it into a plane, then Dave Crane made it into a jet plane.

and panda made it back into a boat

Ahhh, not before Anti-Vision tried to change it to a...

I"nnnn"er-tube floaty,
human skull,
giant beaver, ... was almost an underwater UFO, switched to a Goat Box, back to the Beaver..
and then a floating Easter Basket with butter inside! (grease up to pass some of the narrow waterways)

Rumor doesn't have it... Froggo was sued for trying to release River Raid by NOT using the Jet plane or Boat but, a flying piece of stinky Poopage!

Burger Time because the graphics suck and you can't tell what is what.
...and it's slow as hell!

I pretty much liked most all of the games I had back in the day. Even Sneak n Peak was cool for what it was. It wasn't until way later, as a money wasting, priorities skewed active collector that I really started to "hate" some 2600 games.

Off the top of my head:

Commando
Ikari Warriors
Skate Boardin'
Jr. Pac-Man
Double Dunk
Fatal Run
Sentinel
Anything by Froggo
Anything with the phrase "real sports" behind it
He-Man and the Masterbaters of the Universe
Asterix
Beany Bopper
Blueprint
Any Commavid game
Crash Dive
James Bond
Frogger II
Mr. Do!'s Castle
Anything by Ultravision
Kong Kong
Anything by Avalon Hill
Malagai
River Raid II
Miner 2049'er - both of them
Motorodeo
No Escape
Off the Wall
Pressure Cooker
Quest for Quintanna Roo (whoever that is!)
Radar Lock
Revenge of the Beefsteak Tomatoes
Skeet Shoot
All of the Swordquest garbage
Anything by Panda
Anything by Zimag
Tax Avoiders
Threshold
Tomcat
Anything by Funvision, K-Tel or any of those foreign ripoffs, Cooper/Zellers, Taiwanese, blah, blah, blah
Anything by Bomb

Yep. Hate all of the above.

While it's true they should not have put the "Zaxxon" name on it, I do think it's a pretty unique multi-stage shooter on the 2600 and even has a boss :)

If it had a name like "Space Canyon" I think it would have been received a lot better

"F14 Tomcat", I was never able to land the plane.

"Ghostbusters" could never get past the marshmallow man.

"Demon Attack" The erratic movement of the smaller enemies made them hard to hit

I will get a copy of F14 soon, then I'm landing that plane!.

I've only ever played a ROM of Sneak n Peak... I get the idea behind it, but whatswith the characters having Boners.... do I just have some x-rated hack of the ROM or or what... its like a pornographic game without the porno (aside from two guys with boners playing Hide 'n Seek...)

I admire the programming prowess behind Jr. Pac, but the game itself, with its scrolling mazes and super fast enemies irritate the hell out of me. Then again, I think the arcade is a turd too. Game is just a little too ambitious for its own good. Jr. Pac-Man.... you'd think the name itself would imply a little more leniency, but it's the hardest game in the franchise! :ponder:

IMO, Frogger II is a bland inverted lame ass ripoff of the original and Crash Dive is a nondescript generic "me too" horizontal shooter. That may not be a totally fair statement as I haven't played it in years and may be thinking of another lame 20th Century Fox title, Megafarce maybe?
