Santa is bringing a Wii to my kids this year and well I've been out of the loop for modern gaming for some time now (last system was a PS1 that was free and old when I got it) and I would like to know what games are good for kids ages 5, 7 and 9 as well as some good action games for daddy. So far we will be getting Wii sports, Super Mario Bros. Wii and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. So what do you guys recomend?

Mostly for dad, but my favorite Wii games:

1) Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - best of the Prime series, totally solid all the way through.
2) Zelda: Twilight Princess - possibly my favorite Zelda? Awesome dungeons, great presentation.
3) Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles - best gun game ever made, designed for a home console.
4) Pinball Hall of Fame: Williams Collection - best video pinball collection ever made.
5) Dead Space: Extraction - really unique take on a gun game, very "story" driven, great atmosphere.

Not sure what 5, 7 and 9 year olds would like, but I enjoyed Order Up! Yeah, it's a cooking minigame type of game, but it's the only one I've ever really liked. They added a lot around the basic games (buying new recipes, hiring assistants, great presentation, etc). You can't go wrong with Mario Kart. The first Rayman Raving Rabbids was pretty decent. Not necessarily great, but it should be cheap now. If you have Wii Motion Plus Tiger Woods '10 is fantastic.

My 7 and 8 year old cousins as well as myself enjoy Carnival Games quite a bit. I know the control isn't always the best, but it's usually a good time.

my 5yo loves raving rabbids - with one criticism. to unlock mini games you have to play story mode - which is a pain.

Warioware for the wii is also a great kids game, they like flailing around

also you might consider gamecube games on the wii- very cheap usually, huge library and kids can't tell the difference anyway.

Good suggestions all around. Any of the LEGO games are solid winners for dad and the kids. Mario Galaxy (1 &2), Super Paper Mario, and Mario Kart Wii are must haves. Wii Sports Resort, Wii Party, and Wii Play are great all ages games. Let's Tap is a lot of fun for all and budgetware no less. Gravity is a fun budgetware puzzle game. The DDR series is well executed on the Wii. Elebits is a lot of fun. Haunted House will be fun for the kids and nostalgic for dad. Kirby's Epic Yarn and Donkey Kong Country Returns are pretty much must-haves also.

So many great Wii games to choose from. Let us know what you and the family think!

Kirby's Epic Yarn....me and my daughter play it all the time. Its got co-op like New Super Mario Bros. A+!!!

The Mario Galaxy games are a bit hard for younger kids but probably the best games on the Wii. Epic Mickey isnt too bad either. Not as great as it was hyped to be but pretty solid.

softmod :D

other than that I am enjoying the Super Mario stuff at the moment, mario karts is an absolute must
Geometry wars is an awesome game that I keep going back to. My 4 and 7 year old daughters are having fun with Zhu Zhu hamsters (simple platformer, but you cant loose a life, great for kids)
just picked up Donkey Kong Country Returns, and that looks very good, as does the mickey mouse game (forget the proper title)

A lot of good ones already mentioned, I would second elebits more for you than the kiddies. Carnival games gets played a lot by the young ones and the wife. Also, Excite Truck and even moreso ExciteBots are great fun. Excitebots racing online is more fun than Mario Kart IMO, but there are getting to be less and less people playing.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I guess I have a lot of thinking and shopping around to do. One game did stand out on the lists of recomendations though, for me at least. Pinball Hall of Fame. Me loves a good game of pinball, both real and video style.

Just a heads up, I know I've seen a few Wii Piball HoF titles (Williams and Gottlieb I believe) at Wal-Mart for $15. They were mixed in with the other budget titles.

Sweet! I may have to go shopping pronto! Unless of course they have an after Christmas close out sale with even better deals. Hmm... decisions, decisions.

Just sold my copy to a friend at work for $10. They're all over ebay for around that price. Great game, tough puzzles.

GameFly is having its year end sale on used games. All games come with original case, instruction manual, and are guaranteed to play. I've had good experiences with buying from GameFly in the past.

Anyway, the reason I mentioned this is because they have a lot of Wii games on sale that you might consider, and several of them I really enjoyed:

Family:
Ivy the Kiwi... $10
Super Mario Galaxy... $21
Fire Fighter... $14
Order Up... $17
Little Kings Story... $19

Adult (based on blood/violence):
Resident Evil: Darkside Chronicles... $17
Dead Space Extraction... $14
Ghost Squad... $17
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex Edition... $19

If your kids are into Pokemon at all, then PokePark: Pikachu's Adventure is supposed to be pretty good, but its a $50 game.

I've no idea regarding kids games, but here's the Top 11 Wii titles I'd wholeheartedly recommend. Some aren't really "action" though ;)

Another Code R
Bully
Cursed Mountain
Dead Space Extraction
Disaster
Fire Emblem
Metroid Other M
Metroid Prime 3
No More Heroes
No More Heroes 2
Zack & Wiki

Well the Wii was a hit with my oldest daughter, but my son only kinda liked it and their little sister only liked bowling a little and that was it. Also my in-laws got word from Santa that we were getting this so they got the family the balance board with Wii Fit. So far I don't like Wii Fit, it told me I am obese. Come on, I'm six foot tall and 248 pounds. A little over weight maybe, but not obese! LOL! Now to go bargain hunting for more games.

There's a lot of good stuff on the Wii, something that I think people are denying or ignoring. There aren't that many truly amazing games, though. It's not like the PS2 era, when an FF would come out and just say "This is the console, or else you can't play this killer app". Here's my collection, although it hasn't been updated in a while and is missing a few titles.

Animal Crossing: city folk - bleh. If you have any AC, this isn't better. Otherwise, maybe for kids.
A boy and his Blob - Great, but too easy. Beautiful and whimsical.
Alien Syndrome - Inconsistent and bland in parts, but still basically fun.
Baroque - Truly original, artistic and impactful. Demands your full attention and concentration; not for the weak of heart.
Blast Works - Great concept and fun shooting play, but 1-p campaign is dull. Levelbuilding engine good.
Blazing Angels - Bleh. Poor gameplay, but nice polish.
Bleach shattered blade - quarter-way decent calibur ripoff
Castlevania Judgment - very similar to shattered blade, disappointing. Also very, very gay (if that's a bad thing for you, I mean like oiled men in midriff tops with bows in their hair gay, if you like that, go for it)
Castle of Shikigami - Nice danmaku shmup, goes for cheap. good variety and gimmick.
Conduit, the - best FPS if you want one on Wii.
Cooking Mama - bleh
Data East Arcade Classics - Ultimately disappointing, but has a few almost-gems. Should be cheap though.
DDR hottest party 1, 2, 3 - all decent if you like DDR.
Dewy's Adventure - Cute, kinda deep, overall good.
Elebits - Cute, kinda deep, overall also good.
Endless Ocean - lacks polish, controls poorly, but unique and soothing.
Endless Ocean: Blue World - in ways worse than the first one, but has more story and fantastical elements
Ghost squad - Fun for shootin'. Not much depth here though, very short.
Geometry wars galaxies - If you like this game, you'll like it.
Guilty Gear xx accent core - Great, deep, complex 2-d fighter. Not... balanced, exactly.
Guilty Gear xx accent core Plus - a few new characters.
Harvey Birdman attourney at law - Disappointing but funny.
Harvest Moon tree of tranquility - Awful! I buried nine copies of this in neat rows and nothing happened.
Heavenly Guardian - Controls so shittily that you will commit suicide if you play this game. I am writing from beyond the grave.
House of the dead 2 + 3 - Fun shootin' action, holds up well, not scary
House of the dead Overkill - decent, but very sweary and may be scary.
King of Fighters The Orochi saga - more Neo games. Overall the games included are too much like each other, so for fighting fans only.
Klonoa - Don't miss this one, especially for your kids. A brain-engaged platformer, top quality.
Mario Kart Wii - of course. Maybe the second best MK game?
Madworld - Bloody and actually a little Overrated (by people who claim that it is underrated) but ultimately fun
Mercury Meltdown Rev - fun, like marble madness in ways, gets super-tough eventually
Metal Slug Anthology - nice collection of Neo games
Metroid Prime 3 corruption - top-shelf hybrid fps
Mini desktop racing - bargain bin trash
Mysims kingdom - not deep enough, but cute for kids. too much busywork.
Muramasa the demon blade - artistic as hell, deeper than it appears, controls well, but somehow lonely.
Need for speed pro street - an ugly baby.
Nights journey of dreams (wifes!) - not to the standards of the original. Iffy.
No more heroes - deeply flawed but moderately original, cheap enough. Go ahead and try it.
Okami - A+. Go read any review anywhere.
Phantom Brave: we meet again - Wicked, wicked deep (you know NIS). This game stole more of my life than any other Wii title and after 60+ hours the game was beaten, but I hadn't seen half of it yet. The characters and story are appropriate (well-written, cute, with a good message) for children, but the gameplay is too complex for most kids.
Prince of persia rival swords - nice port, fun combat, why not
Rayman Raving rabbids - humor only, decent party title
Rayman Raving rabbids 2 - humor only
Rabbids go home - GREAT play with friends and family, very funny, but not much replay or solo-fun here.
Resident evil 4 - I don't know, it was too scary for me.
Resident evil the umbrella chronicles - put a lot of time in. Good lightgun game.
Rune Factory Frontier - inconsistent, progress in the game is slow. Compelling only to completionists or stat-builders.
Samba De Amigo - nice port, controls well, lots of music, family fun
Samurai Shodown - Way, WAY too much of a good thing. fighting fans only.
Snk Arcade Classics - 15 or so Neo-Geo classics - I play this more than anything on my Wii, ironically. Great variety and value.
Sonic Unleashed - Inconsistent. Flashes of brilliance but not compelling.
Soulcalibur Legends - Repetitive busywork. Dumbed-down version. Bleh.
Super Monkey Ball - Surprisingly not great, might be nice for kids though. Cute and comical.
Super Mario Galaxy - A+, everyone knows.
Super smash bros brawl - Lots of depth, lots of humor, probably a better party game than any marketed as such.
Tales of Symphonia: dawn of - nice for fans of the series, but seriously underachieves. Half-baked yet tasty.
Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom - great fighter, accessible but versatile. No complaints.
Twilight princess - A+, ask anyone.
Ultimate shooting collection - Total garbage, even for shooter fans.
wii fit - not a game.
Wario Land shake it - very good. creative, humorous, challenging. Pure platform pleasure.
Wii sports resort - never went back to it, but fun for a while.
Wii play
Wild Earth African Safari
Worms: a space oddity
Zack + wiki - nice puzzle/clickthrough game. Cheap.

I picked up Excite Truck the other day and am having a good bit of fun with it. It's a fast-paced arcade-style racing game by Nintendo. It was one of the launch titles for the Wii and I think it gets fairly overlooked these days. It's cheap now (unlike most Nintendo-published titles) and may be fun for the kids as well as yourself. :)

Try ExciteBots next Austin. It looks kiddish at first glance but it is really Excite Truck and more, plus online racing (dont know if anyone is still playing it; if not let me know and I will jump on there!) Morgan

Well The collection has grown some in the last few days (thanks to my daughter having her 9th birthday on the 28th of Dec.). We now have Guiness World Records, and Shaun White Skatebording. The Guiness game is cute and the kids liked it. Shaun White Skatebording is fun for me but a little frustrating in some sections for my daughter who it was intended for. She still hung in there though liked it over all.

Also I saw Tiger Woods 10 suggested once or twice and I have a few questions. Does it have more than 9 holes or more than one course? How does it compare to Wii Sports golf control wise? Easier or harder to get good shots? Graphicly better?
