Imagine my surprise and delight when I popped a CD-R of some MP3's converted to CDA into my Jaguar and the VLM came right up. I was under the impression that the Jaguar didn't like CD-R's. I guess the assumption arose because my modern, expensive Sony DVD/CD player that I purchased in 2001 didn't work with CD-R's so I figured the Jag certainly wouldn't. On hindsight I should have remembered that the Sega CD works with CD-R's. Anyway, the DVD player is lucky that the Jaguar doesn't play DVD's otherwise it would find itself on eBay tonight. I decided to put one of my shelf systems on top of my TV and patch the Jaguar's output into both it and the TV so that I get a light show when I play CD's and the sound is much better than with just my TV's speakers. Now if I can just keep all these girls from coming into my room and dancing. I mean, three or four is fine, but there's only so much space for hotties in the Jag Room.

Players which play DVD's as well as CD's often have trouble with CDR media because they often have a laser which has a wavelength that can't "see" the dots on the CDR Media. I think the mechanism needs a head with dual lasers to handl all media.

Yeah, picky DVD players often work better with CD-RW media. I've tried a number of CD-R brands and none will work in my particular DVD player. I used to do a lot of VCD creation, and was finally able to find one brand that allowed me to play my homebrew VCD's on my DVD player (in my case, only Digital Media 80 min from Circuit City works).

I have the same problem with my Toshiba NUON player. I wanted to play some homebrew CD's on VLM and it took a lot of experimenting to find a brand that works. Imation I believe was the one. They were not 100% reliable though. Sometimes I'd have to push "play" 3-4 times to get it to go. It would spin for a few minutes and say it can't read the disk, and I'd try again. Eventually it would work and continue working until ejected. Then it would start over again.

It's interesting you mention this behavior. This is the exact same operation I get whenever I try to play The Lord of the Rings soundtrack on the Jaguar. And this is a commercial CD, not a copy.

I've a Pioneer Dv-343 DVD player and, until now, I've encountered no problem with CD-Rs. It plays homebrew VCDs, on Verbatim, Kodak and nameless cds.

Oddly, one of the most versatile DVD players out there is also the most inexpensive. The Apex brand of DVD players that were being sold at Circuit City not too long ago (and now Wal-Mart, I think) would play just about anything on any media. The only drawback was their shoddy construction and cheap look and the fact that most people had to return the players two and three times to the store before they could find one that actually worked when they got it home. There's a long thread about these players, as well as a review, on vcdhelp.com.

Yeah, same to my Pioneer Dv-503 (5 disc changer), no problem reading with CD-R's! even can read VCD too!

Also here in Italy there's a lot of 'cheap' DVD player. Sold under many brands, from strange taiwanese to "Polti" (that usual build vacuum cleaner), I notice that often inside there's a PC DVD-player inside. Interesting thing is that this players doesn't have the regional code - my pioneer have it :x - and plays mp3.
Maybe we're going off-topic...

This is kind of weird, you guys are describing like the exact behavior I get from my CD-i when trying to play vcd's. I'm using the cheapest crappiest cd-r's I can get, so that may be the problem too. But I've made some vcd's, and I can get them to play after many tries, but sometimes even after like 20 tries it won't play. Once it does work, it will work all the way through the vcd, and then the problem starts up again. Sounds like Thunderbird's problem with his NUON, but even worse for me.

I'm thinking about getting one of the portable cd and vcd players off of eBay for like $50. They can play MP3 cd's, normal audio cd's, and video cd's. And they are portable, which is kewl. My only portable cd player no longer works, so there's a good chance I'll buy one of them and just use it instead of the CD-i for VCD. Of course when you hook it to a TV to play the VCD's it is no longer portable, it's still cool.

Did anyone ever produce an adapter that would allow a Jaguar to play VCD's? I'd love to be able to play my VCD's on the console.

I could have sworn they had it working at SCES or one of the other trade shows. I could be mistaking it for something else. I think they did have it running at one point though. Demos for the people at the show.

Assuming that the one on the photos it's not a mockup, and that you see it at the show, more than one of these MPEG cards was built.
So: where are now??? In last years Jag-modems, VR-Units, Jag-IIs was 'discovered', it's would be very interesting to find out something other about mpeg card.
