+thegoldenband
39. Super Boy I (Sega Master System) Beat this Korean unlicensed game yesterday, in emulation. What's it like? Well, imagine a nuclear holocaust in which all known copies of Super Mario Bros. are destroyed, but one of the survivors sets up a power generator, busts out some computer equipment, and decides to try to reconstruct Super Mario Bros... ...but he'd only played the game once, and all he has to work with is a MSX, a map of Worlds 1 through 4, and a guy who sort of remembers the music. That's what Super Boy I is like. Recently dumped and released by the good folks at SMSPower, it looks more or less like SMB, but just about every parameter of the gameplay is a little messed up, and it ends abruptly after World 4-4, with the message "TO BE CONTINUED". Um...I see. Strangely, the hardest parts of the game are World 1-4 and the middle half of World 2. Everything else is relatively easy, once you get used to the horrendous controls, that is. At least it gets points for the high-larious message at the end of each castle in Worlds 1 through 3. Instead of "THANK YOU MARIO! BUT OUR PRINCESS IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE!", the game informs us: "SORRY NOTHING" Hey, at least it's honest. And I'll return the favor, giving it a big ol' F. 40. Sorcerer's Kingdom (Genesis) ...and, I beat this today on real hardware. If you're in the market for a short, easy, and relatively frustration-free RPG, with a couple interesting ideas and a fair number of translation errors/typos, you could do worse. It gets a B-minus. Christophero Sly
9-23-2011 Red Dead Revolver (XBOX) - (B-) Here's a game I misjudged. When I originally played RDR (about a year-and-a-half ago), I thought it was terrible--broken mechanics, sloppy action, and a disorganized and scattershot plot. I quit playing in disgust after about the fourth or fifth level. I'm not sure why I decided to give this game another chance, but I'm glad I did because this time the game's spaghetti-western vibe clicked for me, and the game actually ended up being a lot of fun. I definitely still have issues with some of the game's mechanics, but on reconsideration they're not as bad as I had originally perceived them to be. Moreover, as I got further in the game the action ended up coalescing around a decent narrative. And something I missed the first time, this game has one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. I would have given RDR a D+ originally, but now I feel it deserves a B-. +thegoldenband
41. Mortal Kombat II (32X) Beat Very Hard today, though I was hoping to use 15 or fewer credits...I used 19, I think, thanks to some stretches of sloppy play against Kung Lao and Johnny Cage (of all the characters to struggle against!). Funny how easy Kintaro becomes once you get the right pattern, at least with Jax whom I use exclusively. I'm warming up to this port a little bit, but I still think it's inexcusably sloppy in some aspects (especially the sound effects). On multiple occasions I've hit a button and had nothing happen, and I'm quite sure it's not a problem with my controller. I'd give it a C+. +thegoldenband
42. Toy Commander (Dreamcast) It took quite a long time and a little over 30 hours of gameplay, but I finally beat this one, with trophies in every mission. Actually, I beat the final boss before I even unlocked the second- and third-to-last bosses, which was sort of anticlimactic but is evidence of the game's flexible (if quirky) design scheme. Not without its flaws (and not all of those are minor), but still a fun game with an appealing aesthetic, and one of the very few 3D games I've ever bothered to complete. As it happens, it's also the first Dreamcast game I've ever beaten -- in fact, it's the first post-PlayStation game I've ever beaten, not counting handhelds. (EDIT: Oh, yeah, and not counting the Nintendo 64 either.) I'd give it an A-minus.
mbd30
I just beat the first "Actraiser" again after having not played it in years. Boy is it short, even with the simulation aspect padding out the length. It's one of those games that you'll probably finish in a day or two. Plus the platforming aspect, while fun, is rife with cliches of the genre including having to face all the bosses again before fighting the final boss. But it's a million times more interesting and playable than the ridiculously hard sequel.

Sonic's downhill slide actually started with this game. Sonic 3D Blast actually had very good controls and was easy to play. Sonic Adventure's controls are just sloppy but the level design makes it a little more bearable and less noticeable. I can't wait to get to Sonic Generations because that game's demo seems like it will be really nice.

+thegoldenband
43. Double Dragon (Game Boy) Odd port of the old standby, this retains most of the mechanics and level design of the NES version but with a few changes, mostly not for the better. Jumpkicks no longer knock down strong enemies, and elbow smashes are nearly useless. Much worse, most of the checkpoints are gone, so that losing a life puts you back at the start of most levels. The sliding blocks in Level 4, which were cheap to begin with in the original, are now almost intolerable. And the platforming sections are as annoying as ever, with the added "gotcha" that you need to hold Right (or Left) in order to trigger scrolling, which can lead to expletive-laden results. Having said that, once you figure out the right pattern of punches and spinkicks, combat becomes rather trivial. The stronger enemies obediently wait for you to enter their vertical plane with a well-timed punch, and even the final boss is quite easy to dispatch that way -- I did so on my first try, helped by his decision to embed himself in a wall. I also spotted one or two NES-esque glitches, including a place midway through Level 3 where Abobo will obligingly commit suicide if you knock him down in the right spot. And you can earn at least one extra life (I never earned any more than that, so I assume that's it). So if you can navigate the tricky platforming, sneak past the cheapo traps, and handle the one or two places where the terrain forces you into fighting fair, then you too can beat Double Dragon on the Game Boy. I'd give it a C, since the replay value is pretty thin.
+thegoldenband
44. Blue's Journey (aka Raguy) (Neo Geo AES) ...and my girlfriend and I just "beat" Blue's Journey, I guess, using a Dreamcast emulator whose sound engine blew a gasket halfway through the game (so I can't really rate this one). And I think I got the best ending, since I married the princess. But what's the point, really, with unlimited continues?

I ended up giving up, but hopefully I'll beat em today!
R.O.T.S
I have been playing a lot of Master System and Megadrive games lately and especially the Sonic and Streets Of Rage games and are getting towards the end of all of them. So just 18 Wheeler on Dreamcast at the moment which is nothing special but i am trying to complete it again but on all difficulty levels with all trucks and trailers which is a lot harder. +thegoldenband
45. Shining in the Darkness (Genesis) A real pleasure to play this, which was obviously designed with loads of TLC, wit, and ingenuity. It's also extremely time-consuming -- much of the time I put into this game (nearly 40 hours) was spent making maps on graph paper, which was mostly fun but occasionally got wearing. I can't say it reaches the very highest level -- it's not quite deep enough, or haunting enough, for that -- and there are a few small flaws: the last part of the game is anticlimactic, the final boss is too easy, the function of several important items is obscure, and it does all get samey now and then. But how many RPGs are so free of annoyances and BS? And how many 3D dungeon crawlers are actually fun to play, and don't feel like a grind? Not many, say I. I'd give it a strong A, or 9/10 on the 10-point rating system.
