With everybody's help and advice from all the great people here at AtariAge I took advantage of the Indiana Pwns hack and got the Homebrew channel installed on my Wii. Man, there are some KILLER homebrews out there! I've found myself playing with the homebrews games more than the official titles thus far!

Now that I've got the homebrew channel installed, I've got a few questions I hope someone here can help me with.

1. How do I get a backup to work on the Wii using an external HDD or USB device?

I've read a lot online and still haven't figured out how to get backups to work on the wii. Do they read ISOs or do the files need to be copied to a folder? I'm sorry if this is such a noob question but I just don't have any idea. I am pretty technically skilled so any help you can offer would greatly be appreciated.

2. Can the homebrew channel be installed on a SDHD card or does it always have to be a 1GB/2GB SD card?

I love many of the homebrews I've found thus far but after doing a backup of my Wii and downloaded a few titles, my 1GB SD card filled up. I have an 8GB SDHD card handy and was hoping I could somehow xfer the contents from the 1GB to the 8GB? I tried to copy the files from the 1GB to my laptop but it says they can't be read for some weird reason. I thought I could do justa simple copy from one location to another but maybe this is not the case?

Thank you for your time and I eagerly await your replies!

Best regards,
Trem

Heh, nice job! I've never used Indiana Pwns, just Smash Stack and Twilight Hack (back when Wiis could read "backup" DVDs)

No. SDHD cards are supported, but most homebrew don't work nicely with SDHD. I had my 1GB fill up, and switched to a 2GB. Try and backup your items and don't waste a lot of space.

If they can't be read, there's some program called Unlocker, which will let them be read. If they're still not read, then they're broken. It is just a copy/paste thing.

Also, send your backup into your laptop, you'll free about 600-800MB that way.

To play back UPS I use Wii flow installed as a proper chanel
I have formatted a 160 gb laptop drive in a usb caddy. There are two partitions on the drive a wfbs partition for Wii ISO files and a smaller fat 32 partition for all the image files homebrew stuff emulators etc
Use an app on your pc, wfbs manager I think it is called to put the ISO files onto the wfbs partition. You can rip Wii games directly to the usb drive from the Wii using wiiflow, but only originals.

Thank you Ping and Preppie!! for your help! I'll look into switching to a 2GB card and Wiiflow.

If I can use DVD backups I'd go that route also... just whatever is easiest to setup. My #1 goal is to keep the kids from ruining the games I've bought for the system. They aren't ignorant or anything... they're just kids and no matter what I do they never take as good of care of their stuff as I do. I'd really like to get my titles on an external USB that I can mount permanently to my stereo so they never need to touch it. ;)

I'll look into the Wiiflow angle tonight since I'll be home alone to tinker. ;)

Thanks again,
Trem

Can I have your serial number, Wii color, date of purchase, and last time sent to Nintendo? From those four pieces of information, I can tell if it can read DVDs or not without getting to your system and finding out the hard way.

As far as USB loaders go check out USB loader GX as well. I use both (that and Wii flow). Dont have to really but I like to go with a loader that gets more frequent updates. I like the team on Wiiflow as well.

After the Homebrew channel is installed, you need to install some custom IOS's.

The easy way to do it is to get the program called Pimp My Wii. It patches all the IOS's needed to all the latest stuff.

I personally like USB Loader GX, but I have never heard of Wii Flow. I'll have to check that out.

There's a whole neat world out there, everything from installing custom WADs into the wii using WAD Manager, to homebrew games.

With WAD manager, you can get into some really fun stuff, like in my example, they took the rom of Chrono Trigger, and injected it into a SNES Virtual Console game.

Enjoy the new life of your Wii! You can use WBFS manager to install ISO's into the hard drive on your computer, and you can use USB Loader GX to install the game directly from legit discs using your wii.
