I just thought I'd say hi since I joined. I just bought an Atari Lynx II that I found for sale on craigslist today. I found it while trying to find an Atari Jaguar locally. I found one but it was non-functional unfortunately but on the plus side I noticed in the same add that the seller was selling an Atari Lynx. When I saw that it sparked a memory of playing a friends Lynx when I was a little kid and I knew I had to have it. So a few emails back and forth and I am now the proud of a Lynx II. As well as all that was being sold with it, a sun visor/screen guard, a battery pack(uses 6 D-Cells) and 4 games, Chips Challenge, Rampart, Bill & Teds Excellent Adventure and Hydra. He had a few other games, 5 I believe but I had to pass as I recently had to spend almost $50 to repair my Nintendo Virtual Boy. :( Everything was boxed and as far as I can tell complete. I'm especially happy with the system itself, aside from a few scratches and some dust behind the screen it looks almost brand new. The previous owner definitely took great care of it. In total I paid $55, $35 for the Lynx + accessories and $5 per game(talked him down from $10). I'm not really sure if it was a good deal or not but I don't feel cheated so I'm just going to assume it is. ;) Can anyone give me any suggestions on what games I should look into for it? I'd really love a good platformer or action game, something a little more fast paced, I'm not really digging Hydra though so nothing like that for now(who knows maybe I'll develop a taste for it down the road). Thanks in advance. :D

Welcome brother! I sure wish I never got rid of my Lynx. Atari was ahead of their time! Anyway, if you post on the marketplace forum, you'll find people willing to do trades, I'm sure.

Welcome to the world of the Lynx.

Platformer wise I'd recommend:

Toki
Switchblade II
Xenophobe (more of a walk along shooter than a platformer I guess but one of the best games on the Lynx in my opinion)

Oh and you could try 'Hot Dog'. This was an unknown Beta which recently surfaced and has been released on a PCB Cart.

Rygar is also very good.

And welcome and congrats to your purchase!

Welcome to the forum! A good deal you had there. I bought my Lynx II's for around 40 euros each with a few loose games, and with adapters. You should really try and find that adapter. It'll make life more pleasant :)

Welcome to a new addiction! I just got my Lynx II recently, and I'm hooked. Just bought 10 games and can't wait to get them in! Recently I have been playing a lot of Shanghai and Rampart. The best part about this system is that you can get many games for a reasonable price. Some of them even new in box.

If you're into Dungeons and Dragons type stuff, you should check out the Eye of the Beholder thread here. The game is going to be available soon...

Or... if you just want an RPG... :)
EOTB is (in my opinion) the best example of the Lynx's ability.
Oh... and Alpine Games... that shows off the system very well. :)

I would say that Pacland is my favourite platformer on the Lynx. I also happen to think that Viking Child is very good too, especially of you are a fan of Wonderboy In Monsterland.

Other platformers which havn't been mentioned are Fat Bobby which is pretty decent, Gordo 106 and the Mario like Scrapyard Dog.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'm thinking I'm going to get Toki first as that looks and sounds like something I'd enjoy, also possibly viking child though the game play videos I can find of it look a little slow paced for my taste. How about shooters like Nintendo's Metroid or Megaman or dungeon crawler adventure games like the Zelda series. Does the Lynx have any games like those and if so what that the best ones?

Welcome aboard! The Lynx is a fantastic machine and, as you can see from other posts, there are new games still being release by the community. Enjoy!

Thanks. :) I'm actually planning on buying a few of those infact. I'm going to buy Toki, Dracula the Undead, Shadow of the Beast as well as a game that looks interesting to me, Todd's Adventures in Slimeworld. Anyone have any experience with that one? Robotron I'm also thinking about as there is a local vintage game store that has a boxed copy for 5 dollars.

Toki is extremely hard. It takes an amazing amount of memorization. The graphics are great, gameplay is ok, but damn its a tough game if your memory is crap.

I think Dracula and 'Bill and Ted' are as close as you will get to and adventure game.

Just a few among many. :)

Xenophobe

Thats a game I keep seeing mentioned a lot while looking for good games. And from watching videos of it and reading about it it does sound and look like a lot of fun. Not having much luck finding a boxed copy though, I know its not really necessary to get a boxed one but I enjoy looking at the artwork, reading the back and reading through the manuals for games. Plus its nice to have a place to safely store the carts.

Dracula is a point and click adventure game, much like Myst. Not very exciting, and I think it has a bug where you can't finish the game.

Shadow of the Beast is a great platform action game, and even more so is Slimeworld. Don't pass on a complete Robotron for $5. Toki is a great arcade port, and HARD.

I know its a point and click but I'm actually am a big fan of point and click adventure games. I loved the original Myst and even more so its sequel Riven. I also love the old Lucas Arts point and click games like Sam & Max Hit the Road, Day of the Tentacle, The Dig and so on. I was actually thinking I'd go grab Robotron from them today, I looked it up online and it doesn't look like I could get it cheaper anyways so even if I don't like it it won't have cost me a lot out of pocket.

I just picked it up while running errands, I'll try it tonight after class. The box has definitely seen better days but its got all the little inserts in it still. It was funny I got into a conversation with the owner of the store about the Lynx and he said he thinks I'm likely the only person in the area who plays one since I'm the only person to ever come into the store and look at their Lynx games which he said they've had sitting on the shelf for a very long time. :P
