If you've seen this video as played by the DK3 world champion,

at stage 159 the game repeats the first board over and over and over again does not advance to the other two boards.

What is unknown is this...since many arcade games do weird stuff at stage 256...or as some say...STAGE ZERO...what happens on a DK3 machine if stage 256 is reached? Does the game have a true killscreen or go back to normal and cycle thru the three boards again? Apparently no one has played the game that far and the DK3 Twin Galaxies high score record holder does not know the answer.

Anyone wish to tackle this with MAME to find out the answer? Be sure to video tape the results!

Another mystery is that DK Jr. is hidden in the rom graphics. I wonder if there's a way to make him appear somehow? Apparently he's been redrawn from his original sprites so it's not just a hold over from DK Jr.

Its a fairly easy task to cheat with MAME and set the level to 255 and then complete it and see what happens. The game actually wraps to level 0 (no level info is shown in lower right corner) and plays at the same difficulty as level 255. No kill screen; it seems to play normally. When completed, the next level is level 1 and the game gets easy again and starts playing all of the screens again, until you reach level 159 again.

You can make him appear by hacking the game using the MAME debugger.

See http://www.digitpres...donkeykong3.htm for a screen shot.

It is currently unknown if there is a way to make DK JR. appear via normal playing.

One big question. Does it give extra men again when it hits level 1?

Forgive my ignorance, but how does DK3 normally give out extra lives? Does it stop giving them out at a certain level or something?

The game gives you 3 men to start out with, and then an extra man every 30,000 points until you hit a million. After it rolls you get no more men. Also for some reason the game gives you 2 men on your 990,000 point. So in all you are given 37 men for the entire game if you're good enough to hit 1 million. 3+33+1=37.

If for whatever reason the game starts giving out men again when the game flips levels, than theoretically it is possible for this game to be played for extremely long periods of time. I am guessing that there are no additional men since extra men are not given for passing a level, but on score.
