After having Nintendo fix it thrice, our launch day Wii finally glitched its way back into its original packaging and into storage to forever be the collector's item it is. You know, you can only have the thing fixed so many times before you just break down and get a new one (and shiny new black one at that). That being said, I think it had a pretty good run for being a launch day console, particularly with the myriad of problems I have heard others have had with launch day Wii's.

So now we have a nice new black Wii with the built in Wii Motion Plus (and a new blue and new pink Wii motes sold separately).

Also, we got Lost in Shadow and Spider-man Shattered Dimensions and both are AWESOME!

Just wanted to share a relatively superfluous video gaming milestone with you, move along...

I take it you were a pretty active user of the console? And by dead do you mean completely dead of is the drive junked out? Sorry to hear that it died so young, hopefully this new black one will go on quite a bit longer.

I mean dead in that it has been fixed thrice and I see no reason to send it back in again to find out what is wrong with it this time. Seems like the drive is going out.

Oh well, I stood in line and got it on launch day so it will be apart of me forever!

Long live the Wii!

I'm actually rather surprised a Wii has packed it in so soon. Doesn't Nintendo pretty much make their consoles bullet-proof?

I mean, nevermind the GameBoy that survived the Gulf War, or the fact that Morgan Webb took a sledge hammer to the GameCube but there has always been a lot of high praise for how the Big N builds their hardware and I am depending on that durability to last me well into the future.

When, not if, but when my PS3 is a goner, either by the ApocalyPS3 or due to burning out its 380 Watt powersupply or BluRay motor, I had always intended to go back to the Wii as my "new retro" console as per this thread.

I guess I will have to rethink that strategy. Or maybe just get a backup Wii (even though my downloads apparently won't work anymore)

Doesnt the launch wiis have a problem with the dvd drive having a hard time reading dual layer discs causing longer load times? My grandma's had that. I told her to send that pile of crap back to nintendo, and she got a new one for free. I could not imagine playing Metroid Prime Trilogy on that :|

I think the main problem is that it is a launch day Wii and those were prone to issues. As far as I know, contemporary Wiis are much more reliable and sturdy. I think you can buy with confidence.

And again, my Wii isn't dead dead, I just don't see the need to send it off for a fourth fix. The new black one works just fine!

Sorry to hear about your Wii crapping out, especially since I share the sentimental attachment to systems aquired through significant effort.

After all that's happened with Microsoft and Sony's offerings, I have new respect for Nintendo's rock-solid designs. As I plan to keep my systems around for decades after their prime, it further encourages me to invest in Nintendo systems for the long haul.

Unless you had many download games, or did you get them transfered to the new unit?

From everything I've read and experienced, WiiWare and VC purchases can't be transferred from one Wii to another. Nintendo *may* actually transfer the licenses for you, but from what I understand, only if you send your Wii to Nintendo for repair and they end up sending you a different Wii because yours was unrepairable for whatever reason. And you must request they make the transfer.

Did you manage to find a way around this, Stan? Do your copied SD card games load and run on your new Wii somehow?

There are several WiiWare games I'd really like to purchase, such as Castlevania, FF: My Life As A Darklord, and the just released Urbanix (a sort of Qix clone that I really enjoyed the demo of). But because of Nintendo's horrible policy regarding non-transfer of WiiWare/VC games, I haven't purchased a downloadable game from them since the two I bought a day after I bought my launch console.

If there is a way to get my two downloadable games from my launch Wii to my Red Wii console, I will yell with joy and make some purchases today!!

You CANNOT transfer you wii games to another wii you will never play your games again unless you call nintendo. Even if you back up your games to an SD you cannot transfer them or play them on a different Wii. If your wii breaks and you buy another wii all your games are lost. Nintendo may still transfer them for you.

If you have a hacked Wii forget about it.

I just plain old haven't downloaded much from them because the vast majority suck.

We never had any of our VC or WiiWare games on our old Wii, we always played them directly off the SD card. I will check this weekend and see if we can still play them. If not, Uncle Owen.

Sadly, it isn't going to work. Regardless if your Virtual Console and WiiWare games resided on the Wii's internal memory or a SD card, they're still tied to that Wii.

If it's just the drive going out, I'd stick to buying DLC on the same system if I were you. I don't know how you have your systems set up, but you could keep the old one hooked up to a CRT if you keep one around for classic games (Ideal for Virtual Console games) while using your new Wii for retail games on a HDTV if you have one.
