If you're thinking about joining in please do so, it's fun, we have all abilities of player. If you need any help please get in touch. Checkout the Beginners Guide for more details. If you missed the first two rounds: Ms.Pac-man and Bounty Bob Strikes Back, you can still post scores for those too, and I'll award you some points for taking part and maybe some more if you do well ;)

Oils Well

Game closes Sunday 27th Feb 10am GMT

Download the game here:

  • XEX Fandal
  • ROM & Instructions atarimania
  • atarimania rating 7.7
  • HSC rating 8
  • HSC Record MaPa 343,300 (lv.27)

  • Play on default 'Regular' level
  • 10,000 point bonus for 'Stock Holders' (completing the first round. See Post 30)
  • If you don't have the game (& don't fancy using an emulator) - you can play any game for 2pts
Bonus Points
  • Beating HSC record 1pt
  • Unleaded Challenge - (Players who have won a game are exluded from this one)
  • Premium Challenge - (Open to all)
  • for both challenges: In ONE man, get all but one oil pellet (dot!) on the first screen, fastest time wins 1pt - press 'escape' to get the screenshot with your jaws next to the last dot :!:
  • NOTE: The game resets to Regular after every go, so make sure you have set it to the correct level each play!

Now I seemed to remember the game ending after level 9 or so with the factory completed but others don't, so I guess we will find out :ponder: Checkout the reviews on atarimania for hints such as: "Gobble small sections of the maze at a time by retracting the drill often. Remember: he who drills and runs away lives to drill another day." :)
Game On !

Here's my first submission: 108,920!

Oils Well High Score.png

There are 8 levels. Once you finish level 8, you go back to level 1, but the baddies are faster. I got to level 6 the second time around. There is a little "ending" after completing level 8, but I won't spoil it by posting any screenshots.

Well that didn't last long :D OK anyone beating Regular is onto the Premium challenge - will sort out the scoring once I've played ;)

I finished the Unleaded levels and didn't even get past level 1 of Premium. I didn't best my own high score, either. :(

Wow, those guys sure move. It's basically "Run for the power pellet and pray."

As far as tips go, I basically make a run for the power pellet as soon as it's clear. It doesn't matter if it's early or late in the round. Eat up all the oil deposits on the bottom rows after getting the power pellet.

Otherwise, try to keep your pipeline as short as possible. Don't go for long runs or you'll be screwed if you have to retract the whole thing.

Have a plan for clearing sections of the board. Even on the higher levels, there's plenty of time to clear it if you have a plan. Don't just run aimlessly.

Will be adding one of your suggestions to the next poll ;)

p.s. Orpheus - could you check something out on your XE (clean boot DOS2.5, then from BASIC) PRINT peek(88) and peek(89) as you have the extra RAM I'm wondering if this is why Gwobby didn't run... re BBSB. Thanks.

Hi!

What's the way to avoid loosing a life when there is a "bomb" (the blinking thing) in the first row? It's kinda mean, because there is simply no way at this point to stay alive :(
