I had no idea the Lynx did so well in Europe. In fact I wasn't even aware it was sold there till my English brother in law told me about his experiences with one, when I told him I'd bought one recently. He loved the Lynx since it was the only handheld that acknowledged that lefties like him even exist. haha
If the Lynx outsold the GG anywhere I think this was more of a UK-thing and maybe France too than all of Europe. I can safely say that in Germany for example, one of the biggest markets in Europe, the Lynx was almost non-existent. Little advertisement, few stores carried it, and while about half the kids in school had GameBoys and a few had Game Gears, I never met a person who had a Lynx. Magazines did not cover it much either, most reviews were on one third or half of a page only.
I only played Lynx for the first time in recent years, and I have always been the kind of guy who read the magazines and knew all systems.
There was just no way the Lynx with it's no-name titles could compete with the high profile brands from Nintendo and Sega in the long run. People bought handhelds that played the then hot franchises like Mortal Kombat, Mario, Sonic and Shinobi rather than a handheld that had Blue Lightning, Scrapyard Dog and Rygar to offer.
The Lynx had unique software, but not enough stuff with appeal to the masses.
