Hello. Went to sign in to the PS Store and got a message saying I had to update software before I could sign in. Is this normal. Never happened before. Just curious,thanks.

When you say never happened before, do you mean you've never had to update your PS3 before, or just not ever when you went to click on the store?
I just tried to enter the store and it asked me to update as well. Something about the ability to set how long before your controller shuts off if not in use. Have no idea what that has to do with the store but I do know you have to update something or other on the PS3 every couple weeks, although usually it's when you first log in.

A better question is why the hell do we have to update all the god damn time when we'd really rather be spending that time playing games!?
Luckily this last one was a quicky. (Only took about 7 minutes)

I meant log into the store. Just recently started logging into the store. Had mine about a year. Why? And I agree with you on having to update all the time, it's just stupid.

The latest Sony PS3 SpyFirmware update adds the ability to save your game saves to "the cloud", i.e. on the PSN servers, so that you can access them from other PS3's besides the one your user account is tied to.

It also adds some minor security malwareupdates that give Sony the ability to view every file on your PS3 Hard Drive and attached storage devices, and potentially file charges against you or sue you for anything it deems in violation of their EULA patch some of the holes that allowed users with Custom Firmware to play online and hack games.

All Sony updates are mandatory to gain access to the PSN.

Oh I was just curious. If you hadn't had the system long, you might not know about having to update all the time was all, but I agree, in the past entering the store hasn't kicked it off. Very strange.

Damn, Sony is now trying to force PSN usage for Netflix now too. That was never the case before. Luckily they did it poorly and after about the 5th time you tell it to cancel it finally does.

I'm sure people running CFW don't have to put up with this BS, and as it continues to get worse, they'll start having much more usable systems than Sony's 'ideal' users. I wonder if they bothered telling netflix. This is the only device I use it on, so my continued subscription hinges on the next few firmware updates and if it becomes more of a hassle than it is worth.

I just want to watch some netflix today, not go through a firmware mess and the associated risks--which naturally are 'my' risks, since sony assumes no responsibility, but requires them for continued use of their product.

On second thought maybe I'll just unwind on the old SNES.

If I were you I'd complain to Netflix and tell them you'll quit because of it.

That part is only for Playstation Plus subscribers.

Oh what's the use? I'd spend all morning composing the complaint just so I could receive the generic "I'm sorry you're having problems, please check out our online help section" response.

Now every time PSN goes down for maintenance my netflix won't work, but if I was running CFW, or a competing device, it would probably work just fine. Sony, your anti-jailbreaking campaign is working flawlessly.

I don't pay close enough attention to this stuff to know whether or not you're exaggerating on Sony's "secret surveillance" activities, but it got me thinking.

There's that poorly kept secret whereby people are buying PSN games and "sharing" them with up to 4 friends. I just recently started doing this. Should I be concerned?

Only if you have some illegal/copyrighted data on your PS3 HD. Mostly the only people who should be concerned are those with pirated games and/or pirated or illegal movies/porn.

Gamesharing used to be encouraged. IIRC, when I first got my ps3, there was even an official video on PSN of how to do it (if it was there, it's long gone now). Last I heard every game you buy on PSN can still be downloaded on up to 3 systems per the license purchased. It used to be five systems.
