Important Note: This weeks competition is over and no further scores will be accepted.

Mario the carpenter and his brother Luigi are hopping mad! The water pipes in their house are blocked with nests of crawling creatures. If the two brothers can't get rid of them they'll never take a bath again!

Scoring Points in Mario Bros.
  • Kicking a pest off a floor - 800 points
  • Kicking Slipice off a floor - 800 points
  • Bonus Wafer - 800 points
  • Bonus coin - 800 points
  • Punching Slipice - 500 points

Hints and Tips

The Manual

As always, you really should read the manual. In case you don't have the manual, AtariAge has a typed copy available online. Here are the hints it provides:
  • Use your POW switch when there is more than one pest on the screen.
  • Watch out for the last pest on the screen--it will speed up and be much harder to punch.
  • Try to hit a Sidestepper two times as quickly as possible. If you're fast, you can flip it over before it scurries off to a different level.
  • Learn the fastest routs to pick up coins during a coin phase
  • You'll earn more points for kicking rather than punching Slipice. Slipice always stops on the lowest unfrozen floor. Wait for him to stop, then kick him off before he freezes the floor.

We played this game twice before in the High Score Club, back in Season 4, and way back in Season 1. Check out those threads for more hints and tips.

The fireballs are the real enemy in this game, so stay in the midle of the third or first floor/level as much as possible so you can detect the fireballs coming and JUMP OVER them.

Don't try to run away from the fireballs, practice on jumping over them instead.
If you have to move to the sides of the screen wait until you see the fireball go off, so you can avoid it.

The last sidestepper (crab) of every level is very fast, so punch it ones on the fourth floor/level (you standing on third) and then run down and punch it again on the second (you standing on first floor).

oyamafamily

Tip About Bonus Lives: You get a bonus Mario for every 20K points, EXCEPT for every multiple of 100K. It means you get an extra Mario at 20K, 40K, 60K, 80K, 120K, 140K, 160K, 180K, 220K, and so fourth.

Tip for Beginners: To learn how to play Mario Bros., practice with Game 3 (5 lives to start without fireballs). Then, play Game 1 (which is chosen for this contest).

My tips are:

The fireballs are the real enemy in this game, so stay in the midle of the third or first floor/level as much as possible so you can detect the fireballs coming and JUMP OVER them.
Dont try to run away from the fireballs, practice on jumping over them instead.
If you have to move to the sides of the screen wait until you see the fireball go off, so you can avoid it.
The last sidestepper (crab) of every level is very fast, so punch it ones on the fourth floor/level (you standing on third) and then run down and punch it again on the second (you standing on first floor).

Dont stick oround just punching and kicking Slipice, becouse this is cheating. I (and probably all of us) can easely roll the score by doing that.

Sorry for my crappy english and good luck.

First attempt for me: 78,400!

Mario Bros. (1983) (Atari).png

A couple of cheap deaths took me down. Much like the way you could lose multiple lives in Dragonfire. Gotta learn to let go of the controller after losing a life.

Hello Mario...
Played this one at the arcades a lot! Much harder at the arcade with great arcade graphics.
I was very dissapointed with the Atari version BUT it is still a fun game and a great challenge after 60K.
Thanks for another great pick ze_ro. Its funny, the bad guy in the DSi game I am playing is called Zero. Zero traps 9 people on a boat and they have to figure out how to get out.
Called '9 hours, 9 Persons, 9 doors'.
Anyways... day one score...
Vocelli: 75500

I've played a lot of Mario games over the years and this was my least favorite on the Nintendos. I actually think it works better as an Atari game. Today was the first time I played the Atari version.

we should just go for highest level instead for this game. Very easy for someone to cheat to get a huge score.

We just go by the honor system here. There's no prize for winning, so there really isn't much incentive to cheat. It's just friendly competition. :)

New score for me: 101,000!

Yes it´s easy to cheat in this game, but it´s possible to cheat in every game by simply using slowmotion or paus in emulators etc.
I hope and belive that most of us (if not all), know when they are cheating, and the ones who desides to cheat can allways do that without us knowing.

Are u sugesting we take a picture on our tv´s before losing our last life?
Becouse in the end screen theres no indication of levels reached.

In this game it mathers how long it takes u to kill of all the pests. You can easaly miss the last one becouse it moves fast when you have to avoid the fireballs in later levels, and that could score you points. So i see what you mean.
It´s a fine line on this one!

Btw, I really hate this game because of the uneven difficulty and cheap deaths. The first 9 levels are way too easy and boring as hell, then the levels get really hard. It's very easy to lose a life by accidently pressing a button soon after you die and sometimes you have to start a level with a fireball 2 inches behind you. How the hell do you not get hit?

You left out editing an emulator screenshot to paste a huge score on the screen! ;)

There's not much point in cheating, because there's no prize, and your high score doesn't count anyway without some kind of video to send in to whoever keeps track of high scores for certain games. (It counts *here* in the high score club, but a final screenshot doesn't prove anything to Twin Galaxies or whoever.)

I don't know what you two mean. I'm not good enough at this game to get all the pests anyway. How would one go about cheating at this game (as far as game play tactics)? Not that I *want* to, but I'm just curious. Is there some way to "farm" the screen for more points? I'm still too new to this game (even though I played it in a previous season) to avoid death for very long. :) Heck, when I started playing it tonight, I couldn't even remember how to immobilize the pests-- at first I kept trying to hop on top of them like in other "Super Mario" games. :D

Okay, I guess I see what you two mean. Obviously we should try to get Slipice (the multicolored thingy?) whenever it appears, but I think I now understand how this could be a way to "farm" a bunch of points on each level if you deliberately avoided the pests while waiting for Slipice to appear.

Michael

Edit: Nevermind, I was talking about the bonus wafers I guess. I've yet to see Slipice!

You have to be ready to jump over it. that is the tactic i use, jump, jump and jump over the fireballs. Its after level 12 this game realy kicks off. :)

When it comes to farming points you can score several hundreds of thousands by kicking (more points than punching) slipice on level ten standing on the floor three, were the fireballs rarely come from on that level. But once again thats cheating. :)
