Just for kicks, and in the spirit of scanning old mags here's some oldies some of you may have missed from the days when Atari was making their doomed attempt to re-enter the market as reviewed by EGM (when they were known as EGP). Note that this predates their now standard "Review Crew" format though..

I did 3 scans @ 150k each. I've only posted 2 below due to the size. The last scan is for Galaga. Just let me know if you want that one as well and it's easy as pie :)

Sorry for the crappy scan quality though.. but it's not like I'm an expert :)

It's nice also to see that they respected the 7800 and gave it credit where it was due for being a home system capable of bringing home arcade classics that shined. Unfortunately the 7800 seems to have mostly lived AND died on that very reputation.

I'm surprised those are positive reviews!

The reason those are positive reviews is because the 7800 hardware was optimized to do games equivalent to Williams arcade hardware (lots of small sprites over a minimal background with a small number of colors per screen).

When it tried to do NES style games the limitations of the hardware became more apparent.

I meant because they were just old arcade games on a new system.

Imagine if Atari released a system that could do Nintendo style games.

I'd have loved to see a platform side-scroller featuring Kangaroo...

The best game of all time on that system was the Bird-Dr. J basketball game. It got rave reviews when it was released, and holds up very well to this day.

I think you're just a big BBall fan, what happened to your cool Double Dunk avatar? ;)

I grew up on the Atari 8-bit version so the 7800 version just seems a little slower and uglier to me. A lot of people like the colorful floor, I think it just gets in the way of my roll and dunk move :P

I have a Gamepro with a review of Fatal Run for the 7800 (not too good), and Meltdown (so-so). There are probably others if I take a look.

They did release a system that could play NES style games ... it was called the Atari 7800. Or do you not think that ALIEN BRIGADE, COMMANDO, SCRAPYARD DOG, MIDNIGHT MUTANTS, MEAN 18 etc. were NES style games?

The 7800 wasn't the main problem. It was the cheap Tramiels who didn't invest in development, larger cart sizes, extra cartridge chips and other innovations.

The NES and 7800 really aren't that different in terms of capabilities. Nintendo, however, kept coming out with Memory Management chips, invested in software development and kept trying to improve upon the software that they created. The Tramiels wanted to, as quick and cheaply as possible, throw the 7800 out there as competition.

Don't forget the panoramic froo-froo of love, folks.

I have plenty of Gamepro scans of 7800 reviews and ads at my website...

Could you scan that one? Love to see what they thought of a Mario on another system at the time.

No problem. Believe me, I know the feeling. No scanner, camera isn't reliable.
