BrianC Posted March 22, 2011 Share Posted March 22, 2011 (edited) Wow. The K-Byte K-razy Shootout is rarity 8 on Atarimania (rarity ratings seem a bit off. Some games with the same rarity rating barely appear on ebay and are far pricier when they do), but I saw more of those on ebay than the CBS variation. It's not too expensive either. I saw a video review of it on Youtube and it looks like a neat Berzerk clone. I was hesitant since a game with a similar title is 400/800 only, but that doesn't seem to be the case with Shootout. If there are any others out there post and we'll have a bash at them too. The A8 Berzerk (atari) is listed as a prototype so I guess that explains its flaws especially on the movement, still very playable though - remember not to press fire to start your go or you have to cycle through the levels to get back to level 1! therealbountybob, I'm not sure what problems you are having with the Berzerk proto, but I doubt it has to do with it being a proto, since it seems to be mostly, if not 100% complete. I didn't find it to be flawed, just very challenging. From what I tired of the 5200, the difficulty seems to be a be about the same (high scores on the 5200 board are similar too). The controls are fine for me, though I have been using a Genesis controller. Edit: played using the 2600 stick and diagonals were fine. I got around 7000 or 8000 (forgot the last score) after the last one I posted and I'll post it as soon as I get on the comp (typing from iPad), unless I get a higher score. As for other Berzerk like games, I know Shamus takes some elements from Berzerk, but isn't really a clone. Again, not a Berzerk clone, but there's that sweet Robotron port that uses two joysticks. I'm a bit confused by the different Berzerk versions out. Apparantly, earlier versions had trouble with the XL, but the even the rom at Atarimania worked fine in XL mode in emulator. I didn't notice any difference with voice in NTSC between the ROM versions either. The cart version I got from B&C works fine on 800XL. I've not found my other copy yet, the 800 version didn't seem so menacing either now I've played it (I did play this one in the arcades) plus Evil Otto just looks too cute! The movement works fine but you move as fast as Otto horizontally but not vertically and here's the cheat you can wiggle the joystick in the two diagonals to move even faster. Yes Shamus is an excellent game but is enough for a HSC game on it's own as are Robotron and Arena etc, we played Robotron last season, cool playing it with two sticks in 1 player - need to glue them to the desk though! There seems to be a bug when played with QMEG-OS+ 4.04 because I achieved a score of 40K in less than three minutes but the best that I've been able to do is 3,050 with the stock 800XL OS. a8isa1 Posted March 22, 2011 Share Posted March 22, 2011 Ok here is my final score for Berzerk (Kemal's version) but I contend that the game is buggy. My score was at 9700. I completed a level and exited the maze. My score was then 1,000. I continued playing and the score that you see is how I finished this game. I don't know if it should be counted as 9,800 or 19,800. I've played several games since and every time I go over 9,900 the score starts counting again from zero. The story doesn't end there though. Earlier I was playing with QMEG-OS+ 4.04 (this is the OS I use most often). The game was presenting even wilder scores. For example, I'd get a negative score, complete a level and the score would suddenly be above 10K. It's worth noting that in this circumstance the score did not rollover after 9,900. I kept a picture from this session (see below). Will confirm when I have a proper bash at it... for now your in the top spot on 2pts! Failed on Berzerk in tonights session, but got promoted to Goon Class 1 (and maybe higher) on Krazy Shoot-Out: 9,830 (Lv4) the game is pretty good apart from the random placement of baddies/deaths feature Lost Tomb is possibly my favourite game of this ilk (we played it in the 'Time for Desert' round last season, speaking of which get your thinking caps on folks as we're having a theme round next (groans)... I'll start a thread for this soon Must have racked my brain playing Kemal's version of Berzerk and then bludgeoned what's left attempting to play Ulf's. I don't see the connection between Lost Tomb and Berzerk. My small idea for a theme is downward scrollers. Xevious comes to mind (even if it is a 5200 conversion). +therealbountybob Posted March 23, 2011 Author Share Posted March 23, 2011 I've added Maniac to the contest (I knew there was another one)... the Berzerk KE takes off 1000pts when you chicken out of a room, I didn't manage to roll the score board so you'll have to remember how far you got. 5,310 The Berzerk UP isn't great but I like the animated baddies... if you want to show the score at the end of your go. Reset - load "d:berzerk2" and change a line before 1120 to print the variable SCORE to the screen. Then save it. Run "d:Berzerk.ldr" to load the game. There is some other stuff hidden away on this disk/ATR if anyone is a sucker for punishment. The author's phone number is at the top of the code so perhaps give him a call 290 Quite liking K-razy Shootout, got to level 5, 19,700 Novice class 4, I'm no longer a goon; though off to correct the tables so maybe that's a premature promotion p.s. I second Shamus as a great Berzerk-like game to possibly play in the future. I love that one. And the Shadow is a lot less threatening than Evil Otto.
