Amazon emailed me my codes for Reptile a few hours ago and mentioned the game is being shipped. I should get it in the mail around Saturday. With my recent purchase of Demon's Souls holding me over until then, my weekend is looking great :D . Never in my life would I've thought I'd be this excited for a Mortal Kombat game.

Heres a taste of things to come. I took pictures as I unboxed my tournament edition. I have yet to play with this thing, and wont have time until tomorrow afternoon. Expect a better review and a compare and contrast against the Street Fighter 4 tournament stick.

Posted Image

Here we have the top of the box.

Posted Image

The front edge of the box.

Posted Image

After removing the outer slip cover you are greeted with this. Well packed for safe transfer to be sure.

Posted Image

Remove the top piece of card board and here is the first look at the stick itself.

Posted Image

The stick removed from the box and plastic that covered it.

There are some things I will be taking better pictures of to show details I didn't expect. This thing is heavy, and that is a good thing. The padding on the bottom is nice. I didn't expect it to be as useful as it seems to be. The buttons appear strong and tight. I expect that reaction time will be very good with this stick. The micro switches in the unit are not a brand I recognize but that doesn't always mean bad things. They would be easy to replace if one was so inclined.

So far the only negative thing I can say about the tournament edition is it was clearly not made to be stored in the box it came in. Getting it in and out of the box is not easy if you are trying to do it in a way that will not damage the box. There is more tape here then I have ever seen on a collectors edition box. On a storage end the Street Fighter stick wins clearly just because of quality of the box it came in and the ease of getting it in and out of that box.

Like I said, look for a review and I'll compare it to the Street Fighter tournament edition some tomorrow. Think of this as a teaser. First impressions leave me more hopeful then I had first expected. The SF stick with it's fancy sanwa parts sets a high bar.

Cool thanks for the pics HatefulGravey.
My Kollectors Edition will be here tomorrow. Looking forward to checking out the quality of the bookends. They look pretty sweet, and I'm always in need of bookends!

ii really hate that I could not get those too. You would think there would have been an option for all the stuff. I would have paid the extra for the book ends. Ill be keeping an eye out for them on ePay and I hope to get them reasonable as well.

I wouldn't have pre ordered if it wasn't for the arcade stick.

You got a pre order in for the arcade stick?
If you would can you write up a little review after you get it?
I'm bummed I didn't get a pre order in before they sold out.
Call around your local best buys or gamestops...I gaurantee someone cancelled thier pre-order. Thats what I did this morning and found one, gamestop reserved it for me.

Does that stick have enough buttons for MK? I seem to remember it using more when I messed with the demo...

I would have liked to have gotten the bookends too. I could have put them to good use on my RPG shelves. Just for some reason I decided to pass.

I'm hoping someone will post some pictures of them. If they're decent, maybe I'll be able to hunt them down later.

The bookends are really well done. Maybe not as heavy as I was expecting (hoping) but they do have non skid rubber disks on the bottom that absolutely keep them from moving. I'm just hoping these disks a.) Don't fall off and b.) Over time don't leave black rings on the surface of where ever you place them. The disks don't appear to just be glued on the bottom, they seem to go up into the base and I suspect there is some over lap under the base. In other words, I don't think they will fall off. The thinner parts of the figures (swords, clothing etc...) are crafted of a vinyl material that has some give. Good thing or they would snap right off. All and all these seem to be crafted pretty good. I'm happy with the set.

If you're interested, but torn on the price, I suspect these will be selling at a discounted rate eventually. The only CE editions that seem to go up in value are the BioWare ones.

Hm.. With the stick using that button layout, you would think that the originals would be unlockable in this one.. Well, I hear there is a Krypt again.. I suppose they could be hidden in there somewhere?

Just so it doesn't bite anyone in the butt later, from what a friend told me, they have a paywall put in place for the online multiplayer option of the game. As per the usual, games bought new will have a coupon to activate it for free. If you got it used or if your code somehow fails to work, you can look to pay money to activate it. (Although apparently there is a free trial period as well.)

Yep. The game comes with a code for an online pass which is required to play online. It also mentions that you have a 48 hour trial period to play online without a kode.

Furthermore, the people ranting about manuals will be truly infuriated to hear that the "manual" for this game consists of a single piece of folded glossy paper with nothing on it other than the traditional epilepsy warning and an end user license agreement.

Instead of a manual, there's a Katalog of various Mortal Kombat gear. This little thing received the attention and pagecount a manual normally does (not very much).

There was no feedback or registration card, though. I seldom pay attention to instruction manuals and stuff, so I don't know if those things have been absent for a long time or if this is a relatively new development.

One last note on the disc packaging and inserts. The DVD case used for this game is a complete one instead of the cheap kind with the pie-slice-holes on the disc side and the recycling holes on the front.

Played some story mode and co-op team ladder with my friend Verm last night. Then our scrub selves did some practicing, followed with a few Challenge Tower missions.

Overall, I'm pretty positive about this one. I'd still rank Soul Calibur IV and Tekken 6 as the best fighting games this generation, but MK is easily a solid and worthy #3. There's plenty of play value even if you don't play online or pay for DLC (I don't even think there's any pay DLC yet).

I finally got around to playing this game some last night. I feel like I need more time to give a full run down on the stick but it works well so far. Its responsive and fast. I had hoped that they would have kept a more traditional button layout as the hardware is layed out that way.

There is one MAJOR screw up in this thing is probably going to make it a shelf piece though. To do the x-ray moves you hit R2 and L2, well R2 and L2 aren't in a place to make this possible really. One of the buttons is in the center of the controller where the block button has always been, the other is up but the start and Playstation Button at the top of the controller. Making pulling off a x-ray move in a fight just about impossible.

Yeah the X-Ray move is hard with the two buttons.

I was frustrated at not having a manual. I was doing the training and then I couldnt remember how to do a breaker so I went looking for a manual and I found a catalog instead. Didnt they say they wanted to go green by not including manuals? Bastards.

Found the info online though. I like it, I think its very well done but I agree with Gabriel that Tekken and Soul Calibur are better.

Ditto (In regards to Soul Calibur anyways!)
Looking forward to tomorrow, I just realized something though. I wonder if breakpack isn't going to be able to play online with his gamertag if he doesn't have an online pass associated with it?

Tekken and Soul Calibur are 3D fighters aren't they? I know Tekken is, and I can't say I have really enjoyed a Tekken game in a while. Anyway, the point is the difference in 2D and 3D fighters is miles. They are both fighting games, this is about all they have in common.

That's what I was wondering from the start. The thing doesn't have enough face buttons to play the damn game with. Works pretty well with my 4x2 button arcade stick, but it's still a little difficult to hit some of the button combos anyways.

OK, here's a question I can't find an answer to. Since I ordered the game from Amazon, I'm supposed to have the classic Reptile costume and fatality. I know how to pick the costume.

How do I do the classic Reptile fatality?

Are you sure about that? I've been pulling off X-Ray moves without using the 2 upper buttons (next to the center button). Now I honestly can't tell you how I'm doing it, but I am doing it without those for sure. Maybe your controller isn't configured correctly or something?

I'm wondering the same thing. It's not in the moves list, I can't find where people are complaining about it anywhere though really. I can find plenty of references of people saying you get the retro costume AND fatality though, so I'm surprised.

Its set to default. Like I said I haven't messed with it too much, I might have played 2 hours. The moves list just shows the one way. I'm sure they didn't make a fight stick and completely overlook how I would use this new feature with it.

I forgot to mention too, I would have liked to see classic control style. Run button, high and low punch and kick, you know that old bag. I'll get used to it, but it took some time to get around last night for sure.

Doh. Got it. Back, Back, Forward, Down, Block between sweep and jump distance.

Edit: Incidentally, I just want to add that the Fatality practice mode is an excellent addition to this series.

I agree with that 100%. It has been rather jarring to go from classic gameplay to the new style. I'm sure it adds some depth, but when I saw it was a traditional layout on the fighting stick I was excited as I thought it meant it was a true reboot of the original, which I'm a huge fan of. I'm enjoying the new way, but it's going to be hard to switch back and forth (I have an MK4 machine in my arcade, so I still get to play them on a regular basis).
