Got a 3DS Monday from Amazon along with Pilotwings and Lego Star Wars. 3D effect is pretty impressive. Haven't played with it much, my 9 year old daughter loves Pilotwings though. The camera is pretty cool, wish it had come with a better resolution camera...0.3 megapixels was bad for cell phones 5 years ago.

The hinge/top screen seems kinda flimsy compared to my DS Lite, seems like the hinge should be tighter.

Hopefully will have a couple of hours to play with it in depth this weekend.

Friend Codes????? Seriously? I thought maybe when I had to enter a nickname during setup that maybe Nintendo abandoned the friend codes.....I guess not.

i agree about the hinge. Wanted to start a topic on that just to ask people if their screens don't lock fully. When I move the 3DS it can be that the screen bounces very slightly. Not a deal breaker but noticable. Guess, yours got the same problem.

The screens lock, but it's not a very tight lock. I actually somewhat prefer that because it feels like it doesn't stress the system as much when opening and closing it. Just seems like a smoother glide for the screen hinge to me.

Yeah, mine's definitely got a smoother hinge than my Lite, and I'm fine with that. It holds just fine, it just isn't as clicky.

I'm not knocking the system but just wanted to post a couple reports of people experiencing problems, including the hinge issue mentioned in this thread:

Reports of the hinge breaking, i.e. no longer locking into place so that if you tilt the 3DS, the top will slam shut: STORY HERE

Reports of top screen scratching due to design of system when unit is closed: STORY HERE

Reports of the system crashing/error message, STORY HERE

Many, many reports... the vast, vast majority..... are of people having NONE of the above issues nor any other issues with their 3DS and are extremely pleased with their purchase.

That QR code stuff is cool! It's probably a good idea at this point to create a new 3DS Friend Codes specific topic and ask Al to sticky it.

I haven't had any of those problems. Except the second one, but those seem to be more marks that can by wiped off easily. It did scare me the first time, though!

If anyone is going to get a 3DS, I recommend updating the system as soon as possible. I did, and I haven't had any error messages come up.

The hinge seems fine to feel. It's very smooth and locks into place good, without much shaking (it isn't noticeable, in other words).

I played one for the first time today. The 3D is as genuine as the variety found in a Hollywood movie. It's the real deal. It's easy to get the effect, too, and you don't have to hold the device still or right up to your face, a foot and a half away is fine. Graphics are on par with the Wii and the display looks great with the 3D on or off.

Glad you like it. I'm still amazed by the depth of the 3D. And even sometimes you get the "popping out" effects.

Your comparison with the Wii can mean two things: whether the Wii already "sucked" in 2006 or the 3DS "sucks" int he graphics department for it being released in 2011. Probably both. :D Nevertheless, it has the typical Nintendo graphics cuteness feeling to it. I guess, that's what counts.

Actually the opposite... though perhaps I am a little biased, I always felt that the Wii looked good, and capturing that on such a small piece of hardware is pretty cool too. And yes, I too am enamoured by the cute factor, and will be even more so if Kirby is released on it :lust:

I have the second problem as well, and the advice given earlier in the thread is excellent. Get a cleaning cloth and stick between the screens before you close them if it's truly a worry. Otherwise, just make sure you're careful when you close the system and don't slam the system shut (which you shouldn't do anyway as that alone could damage something). In other words, treat it with the same care you would any other high-dollar electronics and the worst you should ever suffer are some smudges you can wipe away when you flip the system open.

I'm enjoying the 3DS a lot! I only picked up SF IV and even though I'm not good at it, I'm having a blast (and there is a ton of things to enjoy in there, trials, collecting figures and of course the arcade game! ).

I plan on picking up Pilotwings and Steel Diver when I find them at a particular store (to get awesome customer reward points!) and I am think of 2 of the following from Best Buy's current promotion:

Lego Star Wars
Ridge Racer
Ghost Recon Shadow Wars
Bust a Move

The built in stuff is cool too... my wife played some Face Raiders and thought the system was impressive... she even wanted to show her mom which surprised the heck out of me! lol

The pedometer is great... I used steps to buy some heroes to attempt to save me... so far, not so good... only made it a couple of rooms in. lol I love this little RPG! I hope Nintendo has more to add to this little gem in the future!

Just a complaint on the Play Coins. I get 10 a day by doing nothing special - just my daily walk to/from the parking lot. So my first complaint is too few per day and no incentive for me to actually exercise. The second is that the two Mii Plaza 'games' eat those coins without giving you much of value. For 2 coins, you might get a puzzle piece for a picture - or you might get one you already have. The more pieces you have, the better chance of not getting a new one. That sucks big time when it takes a whole day to get one stupid piece. 2 coins will also buy you a 'hero' for about three weak sword attempts or one magic spell in the 'find mii' game. It looks it will take a few hundred coins to get through that. I'm at the point now where it takes certain color or level heroes to make a dent in the enemies. That means I will waste more coins for ones that can't do anything.

Picked it up today with Ridge Racer 3D and Pilotwings. So far so good. Having a lot of fun with both games and my mom even tried out Pilotwings for a bit and was having fun with that. Not sure how much there is to do in Pilot Wings (got 3 stars on Training and Bronze levels already) but Ridge Racer seems to have a lot of depth so I'm looking forward to that.

Of course, can't comment on the 3DS without commenting on the 3D. First off, it works fantastic! I get a headache after an hour or two but it goes away once you stop playing.

I am very impressed with what I have seen so far. The side-effects from the 3DS (headaches, sickness) aren't unique to the system, it's the same thing that happens with all 3D and isn't increased with the system. The no-3D setting still looks great?

How is Pilotwings? I loved it on SNES. Is it "in your face" 3D?

In this case its a difference between your eyes wanting to focus/converge on the physical flat screen surface itself, while they need to focus at a point in depth beyond that for 3D. After a brief period I didn't have any issues at all, which is great. :)

Yeah I have it at a good depth now I think, after an hour I didn't have any problems today.

And Topten to answer your questions:

1. Still looks really good without the 3D but the 3D adds so much more to the games. Otherwise the graphics appear to be around what the WIi is churning out now, which still looks good in its own right, especially for a handheld.

2. Pilot wings is turning out to be my favorite of the two games I got (the other Ridge Racer). I haven't played any other version of the game yet, but from what I've seen with this one it has a lot going for it. The game is really accessible to even casual gamers or complete novices (had my mom try it out and she really liked it too). And the best part of this game is the 3D. When you start up the game for the first time it lets you just fly around the island and I spent about an hour just wowed at what I saw. The only thing I could compare it to was playing an N64 for the first time back in the day. Ridge Racer has great 3D too, but Pilot Wings just blew me away. Unfortunately I don't really think there is a free flying mode after you first start up the game :/

Personally I think the play coin payout should be adjustable. For instance, start out by earning 10 per day, 1 per 100 steps you take (as we have today), and make that the bare minimum. But have the system push you to walk more and more each day by making the payout less frequent. As time goes on, have the system slowly add to the number of steps you need to earn one coin, up to a maximum of 1,000 steps per coin. This would give you incentive enough to walk more each day, thus increasing your daily exercise as time goes on. But put a maximum cap on it because too much walking isn't good for a body. You could have the system smartly adjust up and down as needed, depending on the overall average number of steps over a certain period of time (i.e., last seven days, previous month, etc.). That way, if you walk less one month, then the coin payout is raised as an incentive to get you to walk a little more than you did the previous month. If you walk a lot more for one month, the coin payout is lowered to get you to walk more for the same payout. In both cases, the idea is to convince you to walk more to earn your coins.

As for the return on your play coin investments, that should also be fixed, but could be done so by tying the value of the coins (or the number of coins needed to buy stuff) directly to the number of Miis you have in your Mii Plaza. The specifics on that I haven't worked out just yet, but just seems like that would be one of the more logical two solutions (the other, of course, is increase the value of the stuff you get from the coins, or decrease the cost of the stuff you currently get).

1. Agreed. Games without the 3D are nice and look very much like the Wii and all it's capable of, which is quite impressive for a handheld. But the 3D turned on just gives the games that extra something they need to be particularly special (in most cases).
2. I never played Pilotwings 64, but I have played the original SNES Pilotwings. I have to say that Pilotwings Resort is quite a bit easier than the SNES original, but it also has a slightly different feel to it. The SNES one always seemed somewhat serious in nature, if not just a bit sterile in its presentation. The SNES game's difficulty ramped up quite heavily as your progressed, to the point of demanding the very best you could do just to pass on to the next levels in the game. You were expected to execute your piloting missions to the letter and finish as close to perfect as you possibly could in order to earn just enough points to squeak by the licensing for each class. However, it was also a very short game if I recall correctly. I think Pilotwings Resort has a good bit more stuff to do than the SNES original did.

Oh and there is a free flight mode in Pilotwings Resort. I'm not sure if that's what you're referring to or not, but in addition to the missions you normally do, the tap panel to the right of it will get you into free flight mode. If you're referring to Pilotwings 64 however, I have no clue about that one.

I got mine about two weeks ago, and two more games juust last week. Ghost recon is awesome. (I heard someone on this board says it crashes though)

I love the 3DS. It's awesome, and the 3D works better than I expected. My only complaint about the 3DS would be the crap battery life. I mean, come on, 3 hours? I never thought I'd say anything had a worse battery life han the ol GameGear

Luckily, my only problem with the system so far looks like it's going to be fixed soon.

several variants, but I've already ordered this one
