Was looking on the VC and saw this. Is this the same Commando that came out for the NES or different? Thanks.

I think its the arcade version not the NES port. I always liked Commando although these days its a little clunky its still a classic for me.

Just to reassure you, it's the arcade version. The NES version was never made available on the Virtual Console.

If you're curious where the "Wolf of the Battlefield" thing came from, I believe it has been retroactively applied to the original so it would fit in with the naming convention they used for Commando 3 when they released that here a few years ago. It's the translation of the Japanese name for the series (Which was always just called Commando over here).

If you want more, the sequel to Commando is also available on the Virtual Console and is titled Mercs. It's the Genesis version, which was a pretty faithful port of the arcade game. It also included an original mode with a new plot and all new stages exclusive to the Genesis version.

Although if you have a PS2 or Xbox, you'd be better off buying Capcom Classics Collection Volume 1. Probably will run you used just about what you'd be paying for that Virtual Console arcade download and includes the arcade version of Commando and Mercs (On a physical disc, with 18 other classics). Here's the lineup.

Volume 1
1942
1943: The Battle of Midway
1943 Kai
Bionic Commando
Commando
Exed Exes
Final Fight
Forgotten Worlds
Ghosts 'n Goblins
Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Gun.Smoke
Legendary Wings
Mercs
Pirate Ship Higemaru
Section Z
SonSon
Street Fighter II
Street Fighter II: Champion Edition
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts
Trojan
Vulgus

And there was a volume 2 with a further 20 classics.

Downloaded it and man is it hard. No easy mode, just normal and hard.

Kinda. Capcom "forgot" paying for the Commando Trademark, so it was taken by another company. That's why they started prefixing the series with the literal translation.

I was wondering about that as well. :P

I keep seeing Wolf of the Battlefield and stuff like that and never just the word "Commando".
