I used to play this game in college (1990-1993) at the student union. As I remember it, and this may well be a bit off, it had a square board with blocks that you had to lay on the board in a certain pattern. In between levels a scary blue face with a deep voice would come on the screen and tell you what level you were on. It was not Klax but it was something along those lines because it was lined up with the Tetris and Klax machines. This has been bugging me for years and I've never been able to figure out what game it was. A cookie to anyone who can identify it!

Yikes, that sounds really strange. Strange game for sure. It have a joystick, paddles or rollerball? Rampart is the only game that comes to mind where you're laying blocks in a certain pattern to defend your castle.

BTW: out of curiosity, what city did you attend school?

I think it had a joystick but honestly I don't remember, it was so long ago. I went to school in Boston.

I found it!! Wikipedia has a list of every arcade game ever put out and I went through the list sorted by year until I found it. Thank goodness it starts with B, LOL.

Anyway, here's the weirdness if you want to see for yourself:

The guy's face is gray, not blue.

I'm surprised I didn't come up with Block Out just based on your description. I guess I completely forgot about the creepy talking head, which threw me off.

As for the game itself, I'm not entirely sold on the concept of 3D Tetris. But maybe I'll give it a run on my cabinet next time I think of it (MAME cabinet = best self-indulgent, space wasting, time consuming toy EVAR!!11!)

That sounds like a cool toy. :) I've never seen one (in person).

"Block Out"?

They should have gone with "Headtris".
