I bought one of those Weller adjustable soldering irons. Now it came with a 40w soldering iron that plugs into the base. I want to do small electronic work with it, but of course the temp of a 40w iron is just too hot. So logicaly turning the dial to half strenght should put it in the temp range I need, right?

The problem is, that the solder will not melt at anything less than full strength. I've even tried silver solder, which is suppose to have a lower melting point and still I have to max it. I've tried warming it up for 20 min on 5 then turning it down.

Am I missing something obvious? Isnt the point of adjustable soldering stations to be able to do a multitude of projects with the same tool at different temperatures? Or have I completely misunderstood something?

What size/shape soldering iron tip are you using and what diameter and type of solder? What temperature does "5" mean in the iron's manual?
