The Lynx section seems to be dead compared to other areas of the forum... With that, post some of your personal favorite Lynx games, and go into detail why! OR, if you want... Simply post some awesome (or bad!) memories you have had with the platform! :)

I have never hesitated to do so, usually in the list threads but also in here at length: http://www.atariage....nx-newbie-here/

Come to think of it, I could take your suggestion and "update" it tonight :)

Not sure why this is.. I'm pretty busy with my daily life to do anything else but work/study/sleep. Looking forward to a lot of spare time to work on my project.

But you got a good point about posting some stuff here. My good/bad memory with the Lynx dates back from the early nineties when Atari went bankrupt. I bought my first Lynx when it got huge discounts at the stores, with Batman included. Hate the game now for its difficulty and how much I tormented myself back then trying to beat it :)

Then a friend came by and dropped my Lynx on the ground.
Then his insurance paid me a new one, and my mom went back to the store as it was still within warranty.
A few weeks later I had 2 systems! Then another friend came by and dropped my new Lynx, and the repaired Lynx just stopped working at some point not much later... I got sad... eventually I gave away all my remaining games to some classmate. Terrible decision that was.. gave away boxed copies of APB, Lemmings, Xenophobe, Slime World, Warbirds, Crystal Mines, Batman, Turbo Sub, Chip's Challenge and Shadow of the Beast. Years later I bought everything back and ended up at AtariAge. Now I'm happy again :)

Ouch, especially on Lemmings.

My Lynx experience dates back quite recently. It was a system I never considered getting, having a GG back in the day, the Lynx was a perfect unknown for me. Then, in Jan. 2007, I was lucky to find a guy selling his Lynx, boxed, with 4 games (Stun Runner, Todd's Adventures in Slime World, Pac-Land and Chip's Challenge). Being a cheap deal, I got it.

When it arrived at the mail, I got something I didn't expect at all. I don't know if it's the fantastic graphical capabilities for such and old machine, its very different library of games as to what other portables had, or the strange feeling you get when you play a system no one knows/plays of, but I found MAGIC within the Lynx. I played it a lot, and found myself being amazed at the complexity of TAISW, the lenght and great design of Chip's Challenge, the impressive speed effect of Stun Runner and the great arcade conversion Pac-Land.

From time to time, I've been buyin some more games for it, getting some great games as well: Blue Lightning, Shanghai, Gates of Zendocon, Klax, Awesome Golf... Moreso, the games were cheap, even if they were shrinkwrapped!

Lack of money has kept me from expanding my collection, but it's now one of my favorite portable systems ever.

Cool stories guys! Mine's not quite so interesting, but I will tell it anyway. :)

Like some others, I grew up with a Game Gear and then later the Game Boy. I only had one run-in with a Lynx during that period until I got my first one in the late '90s ('97 or '98, maybe later), and needless to say, the system always seemed intruiging to me. When I finally got a model 1 from an online buddy of mine, I found it to be an interesting piece of hardware, from its huge build, to being very loud, to having what seemed like (back then anyway) paper-thin carts, to its other interesting features (dual sets of buttons, screen flipping, etc), to the awesome scaling capabilities. I was really impressed with it and was immediately glad I bought it. My friend was also kind enough to include a handful of titles with it, including Blue Lightning, Ninja Gaiden, Super Sqweek, Batman Returns and Electrocop. It was a good bunch to start off with, showing off what the system was capable of in a variety of ways.

The most-memorable moment with it for me was the day I got it. It came in the mail on a Friday, the same day my family was due to go on a camping trip. Perfect timing! Needless to say, I was able to take the Lynx with me, but I would quickly find out how poorly it lasted on standard batteries. I remember it running out of juice only an hour or two after we arrived at the camp site. My parents went to a local store later that night and picked up some more batteries, but they too only lasted a couple of hours. Certainly nowhere near the 8+ hours I was used to on my Game Boy! It was a sad moment (and weekend), but the problem would later be rectified with the purchase of an A/C adapter (a MUST-have for any Lynx owner).

I never collected too hard with the Lynx, but I did gather a few games, some stinkers and some I really enjoyed. Pit Fighter, Hard Drivin' and Steel Talons were ones that stood out as being mediocre titles to me (despite the later two's technological achievements), whereas Shadow of the Beast, S.T.U.N. Runner, Ishido, and Ninja Gaiden I & III got a lot of playtime from me.

Since then, in the last 12 years or so I have owned Lynx systems on and off, selling them and then reobtaining them later down the line.. To be honest though, asides from that first year or two I owned them, I never put a lot of time into the platform. It's been five years or so since I owned my last one, and having obtained another Model I last week, I feel like digging farther into the system's library. I've since picked up some games I've never owned before, including Rygar, Pinball Jam, Klax and more, and I have picked up the obligatory past favorites as well, including the Ninja Gaiden I & III, Shadow of the Beast, and Ishido. Now that I'm older and occasionally have a little more purchasing power, I'm looking forward to building a much larger collection than I did before.

Some people here may be surprised to know this... unless you remember some of my first posts on here about the Atari Lynx... but I didn't even KNOW about the Atari Lynx back in the day. I had never seen nor heard about one. That's a bit odd being that I have such a huge collection and love for it now.

When I lived in Oklahoma, I decided I wanted to collect some other things beyond the Atari 2600 scene. I looked into the Turbo Grafx (and then found out about the portable version). Then I ran across a Lynx at a flea market. This guy had 2 of them, with perhaps 5-8 games. I remember he had Lemmings, Chip's Challenge and a few others. I talked him down in price and bought both systems and the games for about $35. I think I scored an Atari 2600 Star Wars Arcade game as well. All I know... is after that day, my collection really shifted towards the Lynx and now I sit with one of the bigger collections of oddball Lynx items.

I have to admit there are some wonderful games. Rampage... I played the crap out of it... but I loved that game! The graphics are really nice, and sometimes it is just fun to beat up stuff. I have to admit, I think one of the best games for the Lynx is hands down Eye of the Beholder. A lot of people haven't been able to play the game yet, but soon everyone will understand. The game is simply amazing in so many aspect and I can't wait to see everyone start talking about this game. When Alpine Games came out, everyone loved the graphics and the playability. It was fun, but after a while the fun passed. Same for a lot of games that are 'sports related' (how many times can you truly play the Ice Skating with "tiny Dancer" playing in the background?

The one amazing thing was that Alpine Games was a homebrew and it showed the limits of the Lynx. It brought back a lot of talk about the Lynx. I thought other games would do this (Like Relief Pitcher). But it that particular case, I believe I anticipated way too much out of RP. EotB will press the limits of the Lynx and a lot of people will love it. To me it is a GREAT sit through some baseball Rain Delays game. It isn't a quick pick me-upper like Rampage... but it is a lot of fun. You have to like RPGs for the most part.

Other games that I think are a little underrated: Desert Storm. When I play that game, I think I am actually playing the Sega Version all over again. I love it!

enough for now... almost time to go to work.

I have the two cart types; curved lip and black pcb.

What sold me on a Lynx back in the day was seeing the screenshots for Warbirds in a Lynx catalog section in EGM#28. It blew me away to see a free-roaming WWI dog-fighting game on a handheld, something that hadn't even been accomplished on a console. Seeing that the system also had some of my favorite Atari arcade games (Hard Drivin', Rampage, STUN Runner, Paperboy, RoadBlasters, and Xybots) along with some other games that looked downright awesome (Slime World, California Games, Chip's Challenge, Ninja Gaiden, and Warbirds, of course), my need for the system was cemented.

The system has impeccable arcade ports. I tip my proverbial hat to the programmers that ported the arcade games. Xybots, with minor exceptions, is damn near arcade perfect. And I have yet to play a WWI dog-fighting game on a console with the freedom and realism of Warbirds. Red Baron on the Mac (a PC port) comes close but it could use some polish.

The Lynx definitely deserved better exposure than what it got. It has a solid library of fairly unique games and remains one of my favorite systems.

If there's no complaint from the legal department, that'd be great!

Played the hell out of Warbirds myself. Got up to a 100 kills expecting an 'ending' to happen. Counter resets x]. Cool thing though, I played it on the Comlynx for the first time in 2010, and my friend and I had a lot of fun chasing each other! He was even impressed by the game's graphics, being a big fan of WW1 airplanes.

I worked as a grocery store bagger earning money for a Lynx II. I rode my PUCH moped on a 1 hour each way trip to South Bend to buy a Lynx II and Warbirds. I didn't do this alone either, my best friend at the time also had a PUCH moped and rode with me to buy the same thing! Two 15 year old kids with Lynx' and Warbirds on mopeds. How very midwest of us.

My fondest memories of the Lynx include playing Electrocop, loving the game, and worrying that I would break it trying to get the cart out! I'm so glad they changed the cart design.

Later, we really got into the comlynx games. Warbirds, Checkered Flag, and Xenophobe all got heavy rotation but Battlewheels was always the best. Even after we had played the "regular" game countless times, we started coming up with "new" ways to play the game. For example, one player would take a low-budget car against everyone else on foot. This was a good one against the computer, too, since we usually only had four or five human players at any given time. After Battlewheels, Xenophobe was always good, too, and everyone else always wanted to be the Xeno.

The Lynx has several good arcade titles that are easy to learn but difficult to master like Joust, Robotron, and Missile Command. These games are great time-killers when you are waiting around for something. They just never get old for me.
