I wasn't able to beat the first boss, i think it's best to just go to right side of the screen to avoid getting shot.

Is anyone up for a C64 side challenge?

Play the C64 version of Xevious - settings - beginner (default)

I haven't been able to beat the boss, either. In fact, I'm pretty sure I've never been able to beat it on any version of Xevious (and I remember trying particularly hard on the 7800 a long time ago.)

I beat the first boss on the 7800 version a few times.
It helps to flip the difficulty switch to fire both weapons at once.

Yeah, in the 2600 version the tanks look like worms. LOL

Yeah, the 2600 one is just bad, but playable. The 5200 one should've been released. Even as-is, it plays fine.

I played this but only got 2ks so far.

The fire "rods" seem to make hits, but the bullets don't?

What are bullets for?

The "bullets" are actually bombs, and they are used to hit the ground targets (and, if you're really good, the boss ship)

Seriously hard game! I got past (but didn't destroy) the mothership once, but my best score came when the damn thing blew me up each time.

27,630 (just a hair more than zylon... sorry, man!)

I'm not going to be able to play this round.
I've tried three controllers and I'm not able to get the bombs to fire unless there is something wrong with my 5200.

Bombs are the upper fire buttons. Try them on another game to see which it is, system or other.

Atari Age says Xevious is a prototype. How do you guys play it on the real hardware? Is it on a multi-cart thing?

I had a cart made some time ago.
It sits right next to Battlezone and Sinistar.
