Nice. I'll give a few of these another go tonight. I usually get around 30-40k on every version every time I play except 2600. 5200 version my game's usually over around 9k. About 1 in 10 tries I get lucky and hit my normal death point.

I've always sucked at Defender, no matter which version. That said, I think the 5200 version plays great.

81,375. Only had a chance to play a couple of games.

[Edit] - Not that it matters, but I looked at the pic I took, and it was 81,375, not 81,325.

Thanks. :) That was my last game of the night since it took 2 and a half hours. I still had about 10 lives left but I turned it off. Machine was getting hot.

Nice. The key to mastering this one is the swarmers. A couple different approaches will work.
Method 1: I like to aim carefully and avoid them until last. It's a lot easier to shoot the little ones when everything else is out of the way.
Method 2: Try to get them all on screen and shot them once to break them up, then use a bomb. Takes 2 bombs if you don't shoot them first.
Method 3: One-on-one becomes 4. Shoot swarmer and as it gets close blast the 2 center bits and move forward straight through them. The end ones will have fired at your last position. Quickly turn around and gun 'em down after passing through.

Commodore controls are spacebar for bomb, must hold 1 second. Hyperspace is shift or enter. Both work on Vic 20, C64 is supposed to be the same.

Good tips
I like to take out the landers first, the swarmers is what gets me. :x

Big improvement at C64 Defender. :)
I still couldn't get the space bar to work for bombs on CCS64, so i give it a few goes on WinVICE.
The space bar worked great!

Well, it seems I've been approaching this game with the wrong strategy since like..Arcade times! Always being the hero, trying to save lives, is a good way to die QUICKLY!! Not anymore for me...now it's shoot first, then save humanoids later; that is if any happen to survive  The bonus points are nice, but they're not much good if you're not around to claim 'em ;) My clever new strategy has gotten me just shy of 100K, but it will take some real skill to get to 200K and beyond. Look out roadrunner, 'cause I be nippin' at your heels :D :

BTW: thats a great looking title screen on the VIC-20 version

The Commodore versions still have the same issue with the seeker ships/saucers appearing right on top of you. Otherwise game play is nearly the same as Atari system releases. Of note is the Vic-20 screen. It's a little harder to line up shots based on the Vic having less rows available to it on screen.

I remember a vintage tip book saying that the saddest sight in Defender was the Game Over screen with a full set of Smart Bombs. :-)

ah yes… I suffer the disorder of having 'bomb pride'

it is something that occurs with me in the many shooters I play… my seldom use of bombs! I'd fare better and progress further if I'd only use a few bloody bombs!

A major part of my Defender strategy is using bombs to get out of situations that would otherwise be certain death! The trick is to only use them in those situations, so that you have them when you need them!

I was able to bump up my score just a bit this weekend... now at 477,275.
