I have a 7800 F-18 cart by Absolute with a single diode visible just above the part of the board that is inserted in the unit. I have never seen this on any other cart. Any idea why?

The NTSC cart I just checked had a resistor showing. Are you sure it was a diode? The PAL cart didn't have it though. Must be a different board design.

diode/resistor - I don't know - its this little ceramic thing with four colors on it and a wire coming out each end - either way I have not seen one visible on a cart before.

That'd be a resistor.

My F18 Hornet has it also. It's a 1.5K resistor connected from +5 to the clock line, must be a pull up resistor, although I don't know why it's necessary.

I've never opened it to see the board but I imagine it would have something to do with the bankswitching circuit.
