I've got a PSP1001 and I wanted to mod it to play emulators a year ago and though all the tutorials said "easy" and "just do this, 1 2 3" I couldn't get it. I'm the type to want to know how to do every step before I start and I just couldn't get my head around all the steps. Is it easier to do now?

A PSP 1000/2000 has never been difficult with the use of a Pandora battery. You can get those for dirt cheap (less than $10 shipped) from deal extreme.

Pandora and magic memory stick is the way to go. Psp-mod.com has a program to make the memory stick and the cfw files. If you need help post over there. I have found their forum very helpful.

Yeah, even the custom firmware released of the latest official versions even have clear-cut instructions on how to install them. I believe they even let you go onto PSN without issue for online games and the store.

Man, I keep hearing about hacked versions of the latest firmwares. Where can I find these, or info on 'em?

Ok, maybe a better question would be... Is there a single page on the internet that tells me what I need to know and how to do it? Instead of sifting through literally hundreds of pages on the subject, I don't have the patience. A single You Tube video would be just as good.

These days CFW installers run on OFW. It's never been easier.

nonner, thankfully there's lite custom firmware now. All you have to do is put it in /PSP/GAME in an appropriate sub-folder, and run it like it was an installed game. Gives you the benefits of custom firmware without the nasty risks of bricking.

Do you have any more info or links you can share? I'm still old school I guess, because I'm on CFW 5.00 M33-6. Does this HBE give all the benefits of a CFW?

Shouldn't be. I had the absolute newest 3000 and it was still about 5 minutes to hack it. The only catch is that for mine, because it's the newest motherboard, I can't permantently hack it, so if I do a hard reset I have to run a 10 second program to re-hack it. It's insanely easy.

If you're just looking for a few emulators though, it's almost unnecessary because there are alot of emus out there that are "signed" so they look like official programs and will run on any PSP without any hacking or custom firm ware needed at all.

As far as where to find the latest OFW and the custom stuff, try sites like pspslimhacks.com

Lemme put it this way then. Like I said above, I'm already running CFW 5.00 M33-6. Is there ANY reason/advantage to upgrade to a newer FW?

Yeah, more homebrew are being re-written to take advantage of extra memory on the Slim and beyond for a start. Plus if you want to use the PSN for anything (like getting PS1 classics that Sony can properly convert that use CD audio music), you can purchase/download stuff from there.

I've just listed one of our 1000 series PSPs on eBid. It has hacked firmware. I've done a couple with the Pandora Battery. It's really quite straightforward. However, took me a while first time as I was having nothing but problems. Turned out to be caused by a memory stick that wasn't as genuine as it looked. Used another and it was fine.

Eh, it's only for version 5.03. I'd honestly say you're better off running either TotalN00b's homebrew enabler of firmware 6.39 or the lite custom firmwares of 6.39 from neur0n (anything but the PSP Go), or PRO-B7 (everything including the GO).

I'm still on pretty old 3.xx CFW on my 1000 (I actually got a game that needs 4.xx firmware, so I'll have to update it someday), but I can tell you what has changed in the past year or so that makes everything different.

Basically (as I understand it), in early 2010 someone figured out a weakness in the way that downloadable games are digitally signed so that you can sign your own homebrew code and have it run on any unmodded PSP. This allows a HEN (Homebrew Enabler, which is a hack that lasts until the next reboot) to run on any PSP.

If you have a really old 1000 with sufficiently old firmware, you could still do the old-school hacks on it (I borrowed a copy of Lumines from a friend for my first hack way back in the 3.50 days), and you could use a Pandora battery, but what's the point when you can get the PSP to run any code you want in a way that Sony can't fix?

The only real trick is whether you can run ISOs or permanently mod your PSP. I don't know if a HEN allows running ISOs, and you can't permanently mod newer hardware, at least until someone understands it well enough to make the right kind of drivers.

I'll only add in from the position of someone that made his own game backups, but the PRO series of LCFW allows it off the bat, but TN's homebrew enabler requires a plugin (with software) in order to run such.

Alright, so a friend of mine has a 2000 that he's been having hell running his legit Y's Collection on while keeping homebrew/emulator support. I think currently he's upgraded to the latest official firmware. What's his best move to reach his goal of playing recent legit discs but having homebrew support too?

First off, download a homebrew program called "PSPIdent". This will provide info on what type of 2000 he has (as that model series had at least five different motherboard revisions, the last revision being hack-proof from full CFW). After that it's a matter of downloading/installing the appropriate HEN/FCFW/LCFW of 6.39. I'm going to be at work from 5pm EST to 11:30pm EST (and will probably arrive home an hour afterwards), so let me know around then which version of the 2000 he has.

Hi guys... I'd really like to have a portable Atari 2600. I've tried installing an Atari 2600 emulator on my smart phone, but I find touchscreen controls to be awful. From everything I've read, the best option seems to be to buy a used PSP 1000 / 2000 in good shape, and install a 2600 emulator. If I understand correctly, these are the steps I would run through.

1) I first need to install the 3.60 firmware update.
2) Install 3.60 HEN (Homebrew Enabler) installed to \psp\game\ folder on the memstick.
3) Once I've run this app, I run another homebrew app called "LCFW Installer".

These are all available on psp-hacks site, apparently.

There are many firmwares available for different models so I make sure I download "LCFW". CFW are normally specific to PSP1000 / 2000 (classic and slim) models. LCFW is available for all, so there is no need for Pandora or anything.

Just download those two homebrew apps after updating to 3.60 and I should be ready for Atari.

Did I miss anything?

I need to look into figuring this out again. I really want to do some emulation on my PSP 3000. I'd love to have portable versions of some of my PS1 rpgs an my TG16 games.

I have tracked down someone local selling n original 'fat' PSP 1000 in nice shape. It comes with a charger, a 2-GB memstick, and a few disc games for $75.
Apparently it has old OFW 3.71 on it, and everything works great.

I have looked at PSPhacks for guidance on how to install CFW, as I want to use it primarily for Atari 2600 emulation. The problem I find with PSPHacks is that not all the tutorials are current, so some information there conflicts with other info.

As near as I can figure from the most recent tutorial, here are the steps I would go through with this PSP:

Quote

http://forums.dashha...psp-models.html

PSP 1000 – Install 6.60 PRO B-9 when Official Firmware is below 6.60:

1. Download OFW 6.60 - http://psp.dashhacks.com/file/2119 ( http://bit.ly/q7dKhY )
2. Extract the file
3. Copy EBOOT.PBP to PSP/GAME/UPDATE/
4. From the xmb (main psp menu) run the update from Game – Memory Stick 5. Now you are on OFW 6.60
6. Download 6.60 PRO B-9 - http://psp.dashhacks.com/file/2123
7. Extract the file
8. Copy PROUPDATE and CIPL Flasher folders to PSP/GAME/ 9. From the xmb (main psp menu) run the PROUPDATE from Game - Memory stick.
10. Press X to install CFW
11. From the xmb (main psp menu) run the CIPL Flasher from Game - Memory stick.
12. You have successfully installed 6.60 PRO B-9
